There are more hedgehogs in a city than there are in the countryside. How do people know there are less than 1 million? are they looking in the right places?

I would like to put food out for hedgehogs but we get rats in our garden so i dont think it would be a good idea

Hedgehogs, are vicious killers, they kill and eat all ground dwelling chicks, will borrow into hen houses and kill chickens, their worse than stoats,and rats for native birds, covers in mites,fleas, and carry disease.
