Thank you for this excellent video. I have one tip to add, which has been invaluable to me, especially since we just moved to a home with lower ceilings and I had a LOT of curtain hemming to do! After you attach your curtain rods to the wall, hang your too-long curtains backwards. This way the hem is facing outward, which makes ironing and sewing the hems much easier. When you’re done hemming, just turn the rod around (without removing the curtains from the rod) and you're done! Hope this helps a few folks. Thanks again for this video.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I followed the instructions to hand hem my BR black out curtain panels (thick material) and I am super pleased with the results. It took some time, especially the ironing and pinning to get it just right, but so worth it since all I had to spend $ on was for the flat pins and thread! Thanks again!

You gave me the cup of courage I need. I don't know why I have talked myself out of hemming my drapes this way so many times. Sigh. Thank you.

Thank you for the clear tutorial! It never occurred to me to hem the curtains while already hanging, but it makes sense and seems easier to handle all that fabric. You should put in the title/description that you're hemming by hand so that people can better find the video. :)

Or avoid it. I didn't realize she'd be hemming manually. I would never hem by hand. Sewing machine only for me.

Very informative, organized and step by step. I really appreciate the time, consideration and experience that went into this. Thank you! One thing I might suggest is if using constant background music, use music that is more varied. This 6-second pattern has quickly drilled its way deep into my brain, will stay a long time afterwards, and threaten to return everytime I go back to review this video.

So helpful! My mother was a professional curtain maker, and although I'd go help her hang finished draperies, I guess I wasn't paying a lot of attention to all her sewing! ☺ Mali

Hi there. I live in England, my partner Sue is in hospital, and to give her a surprise when she comes home, i thought i'd buy some new curtains for our bungalow. When i went to the shop i found it was easy to get the correct width but the lengths were too long. I watched your video and i am going to attempt to shorten the curtains ( 4 sets ) by following your great instructions. The problem is the curtains seem to have a white piece of fabric on the back side of the curtains, the same size as the curtains. I am writing to ask, do i fold this inside layer and finish it like the curtain? I hope iv'e explained it well enough and i appreciate your help. I enjoyed your video and many thanks. Oz

The white fabric on the back is the lining, which means they are probably well-made curtains (good job!). The curtains will hang best if you can keep the bottom of the lining separate from the bottom of the curtains, which means you'll need to hem both separately. If that's too tricky, you can fold the lining inside the hem, it just won't hang quite as nicely.

Ok so the beginning of the video shows unpicking of the white fabric and a couple minutes later the fabric is all pretty and sewn in place....is there a bit missing? I think so.

I'm making curtains out of sheets. I cut them to size and was wondering if making a hem on the raw edges on the sides would make the curtains look bad? I made hems on the bottom and they're a bit ruched now, as if the thread is too tight. Maybe my hems were too small, I only took 2 cm twice. I believe curtains need wider hems?
@aurorerich3 жыл бұрын
So basically my question is if I can use your technique on the sides too, not just on the bottom.

what kind of hook and rod system did you use? Im trying to get the same look you achieved, but probably with a euro-pleat.
@Simplepracticalbeautiful5 жыл бұрын
I could never find a good hook and rod system to make box pleats, so I just used an Ikea curtain system and sewed my own box pleats then hand sewed in little pockets to hold the hooks. It took a long time and was a lot of work, so I never posted about how to do it because there's got to be an easier way. I'm sorry not to be more helpful.

If you don't have a raw edge, can you just fold it up and then use iron-on hemming web? I'm hemming some premade curtains, so am presuming this double fold isn't necessary?
@Simplepracticalbeautiful6 жыл бұрын
Right. If you have premade curtains, they already have a hem, so you don't need to double fold the bottome to hide a raw edge. Just fold the bottom to the right length, pin it, and use your iron-on webbing to secure it.

You say not to put the needle and thread Thu to the front so the stitches don't show in the front but you don't show how you're doing that. I'm not understanding how to sew the back folded piece to the front without stitching showing on the front side
