The video starts on the patch already made. I have never worked this stitch... So for someone like me this video isn't helpful. No instruction provided on number of chains and how to work the first few rows. 😢

Chain can be any number. Single crochet in second stitch from the hook, follow the instructions for the forward herringbone in remaining chain stitches, chain one and turn, follow on with reverse herringbone instructions. Hope this helps and is understandable.

Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning that the stitch has three loops. I’m totally new to crochet and my mind was boggled when I started trying herringbone without knowing I needed the three loops.

Yours is the first I’ve found that mentions going under 3 loops and then 2 on the end of the row. I consider myself a relatively skilled knitter. The most I’ve really ever crocheted though are Amigurimi dolls and animal rugs for my grandkids. When I was a kid, my mom taught me how to crochet but left handed - so I never really got into it as reading patterns was a pain in the butt for me. Although this video is right handed, it is so much easier for me to follow. Thank you!

I didn’t see anything about the foundation chain. Any particular multiple? So you start with a row of single crochet & then start the forward herringbone?
@thecraftiman2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! No particular multiple needed - just start the row off with one single crochet stitch and then proceed with the forward herringbone stitches.
@StarAnyse2 жыл бұрын
Sine a Half Double Crochet yields the requisite "3 loops," that's what I used as foundation row & it seems to have worked.

I was trying to follow a scarf pattern from a magazine but it didn't make any sense. Decided to come over to YT, watched a ton of videos, the reverse of the stitch didn't make sense. Echoing the comments below, yours was the best video. So glad I didn't give up, thanks for a very clear tutorial.

Going under all three loops on each half-double crochet condenses each row making the chevron pattern really pop. Imo, the wrong side looks better, too. Thank you for a simple and clear explanation!

Thank you for the excellent instructions. I’ve tried several times and failed miserably. My fabric didn’t show the smooth “arrows”. From your video I realized I wasn’t going under all three loops. Once I did my fabric had the desired look and texture. Thanks again 😊

AWESOME. I'm so impressed with how excellent this "tutorial" is. I was briefly confused with the reverse single crochet & ripping it out but it was good to practice that first (I paused & did a whole row : ) I started with a Half Double Crochet foundation row - I don't think you specified that but it seemed to be what was needed. Note: repeated Forward Herringbone rows makes for very tight rows - I'm thinking it would be good for some borders. MANY THANKS!!!
@thecraftiman2 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you got the reverse single crochet down - it definitely takes some practice but is very satisfying once you get going! And I didn't specify a foundation row, but HDC works well! Another alternative for a foundation row is chaining any of stitches greater than two, working a single crochet into the second chain from the hook, then working a forward herringbone stitch into the third chain from the hook and all chains following. And if you worked stitches that only produce two loops before your herringbone section, you'll just need to work through the two loops.

I'm making a crochet hook case. I modified it to be trifold and to fit my ergonomic clover hooks. I also did linked stitches to keep it from having gaps. Working wonderfully! Now I'm onto the outside cover of the case. I want to do a herringbone pattern for it. This is a pretty stitch pattern and I don't need double sided fabric. One day I might do a video on my hook case. I think the linked stitches took it from good to perfection. Have seen others modify the pattern but no one has linked the stitches. I love linked stitches. 😁 BTW. I think on Dora Does blog that that loop ur talking about is the golden loop. They have names for people whom pull that loop differently. A rider rides the lower stitches closer, midway. Yanker pulls the loop tight, Can't remember the other. I think. I would have to go read it again. It's on her blog post about gauge. If u find your gauge is correct across but too short, try pulling your golden loop taller.

Is herringbone easier if you're able to switch between right-handed and left-handed crocheting? I'm challenging myself this year to do more left-handed work.... just because.
@maxinecrook5319 Жыл бұрын
I love how this works up! The back doesn't have that third loop hanging out making lines, so it's just clean. So, I tried alternating hands, and I think it's easier. I know it's not for everyone, but it works.
@kerrywright89502 жыл бұрын
Near the end you did like 3 reverse single crochets without going through the leg, what was that for? The key is going thru the leg of the sc you just worked then the next 3lps to make the herringbone St right? We're those 3 scs just showing a plain reverse sc?
@mphomanetsi34902 жыл бұрын
How did you get the 3 loops right from the beginning
@StarAnyse2 жыл бұрын
Since a Half Double Crochet yields the requisite "3 loops," that's what I used for a foundation row & it seems to have worked.
@thecraftiman2 жыл бұрын
If the row before your first herringbone row is composed of stitches that produce only two loops (such as a single crochet or double crochet), then you only need to work through the two available loops. For a foundation row, you can chain any of stitches greater than two, work a single crochet into the second chain from the hook, then work a forward herringbone stitch into the third chain from the hook and all chains following. Thanks for your question!

This is beautiful! I wish I knew what kind of yarn you’re using. I always chose some that frays easily 😢

It would help to NOT START IN THE MIDDLE of the project. HOW do you get to the point where you have the 3 LOOPS to catch in a single crochet. I tried doing a row of HDC, and it still only had 2 loops to go through. Would you start a cooking lesson with "OK the ingredients are mixed, now pop it in a 350 degree oven??"

This is my Least favorite stitch! Ugh. This is such a pain and there’s way better textured stitches. Prettier, easier in the hand and less yarn usage, this stitch is a huge yarn eater. No fun. 👎🏻
