There are a while lot of ways to do this, but this is a garbage idea that ruins the integrity of the wood. If possible, and you choose to go this route, any series of joints would be a good solution. No screws needed, looks great. If using screws, use the pilot bit do you dont split it, then use a larger bit (tons of different ways to do this) to ensure the head of the screw is below the surface of the wood. Then hammer a matching plug into the hole, turn the plug so that the grain matches the host and it can not be seen. Then sand her flush, let the dust from sanding fill in any imperfections (use a dust glue mix if absolutely necessary as a filler). And bam... it'll look perfect and still be strong and the glue won't stop your finish from soaking in.
@alysemarie83133 жыл бұрын
Like others have pointed out, this is not how it's done. Usually you design your project so any fastening hardware is hidden by design. Or you countersink your screws and fill the holes with dowels flush trimmed to the wood with the grain in the same direction. Or other ways. This is a trash idea and looks cheap as hell.

The professional way to do this is to cut cylindrical plugs from a scrap of the same wood (special plug cutters are available), counterbore the screw hole slightly, and glue in the wooden plug taking care to align the grain. You can then remove the excess plug with a sharp chisel. The method shown is not very reliable (significant chance of going wrong), and no use at all if you're in the middle of something... and covering screws with filler is going to look very obvious (and rubbish) if you're varnishing the wood.
@human-qp1mf2 жыл бұрын
This looks easier. Looks finished too.
@chemistrykrang80652 жыл бұрын
@@human-qp1mf lots of things look easy when you can do it 3 or 4 times and just show the best video. Depending on how the grain of the wood is, you'll really struggle to peel a neat sliver back like this in many cases... and it'd be impossible in hardwood, or in the middle of a length where you don't have access to the end grain. If that sliver detaches (which it will, often) it'll never go back quite right, then you've just ruined the part and will have to go and make a new one. Or you could just buy the plugging cutter and do it a reliable and neat way. Up to you, but personally I'll stick to doing it properly.
