Seems that the key to this working is the VBA code mentioned at the end, which requires saving as a .xlsm (Excel Macro-Enabled Workbook). When I went to save it normally, it popped up some window talking about disabling auto-save that I didn't really understand. The target.calculate basically triggers a recalculation when a different cell is selected, aka when you click on it. Otherwise it wouldn't highlight a row unless you manually refresh for example.

Another video suggested the VBA code : Application.Calculate The latter sort of worked, though not perfectly.

you can use =OR(ROW()=CELL("row"), COLUMN()=CELL("col")) to create a cross effect on the selected cell by highlighting both the entire row and the entire column.

@@prjk4531 Hi, if you get an error while trying to copy pase the code, it might be that you have to replace the , with ; before COLUMN, i think this has to do with your language settings!

thanks! seriously hard to believe that Microsoft hasn't created a toggle/button to do this automatically as it really is useful if you have more than 4-5 columns. I dont really like that i now need to save any sheet that i do this to as a macro enabled worksheet with a different extension .xlsm)....but i guess thats the trade-off.

If you are using Excel in another language than English you must use the "translated" formula names. For example in French, you must type: =LIGNE()=CELLULE("ligne"). It won't work with : =row()=cell("row"). The VBA code does not change however.

This is a great feature and I did implement it; however, now my data entry lags. After I enter data and hit Enter, it doesn't move to the next cell. I have to wait for it to do it on its own after that. Is that a common issue once you use this feature?

Yes thats possible, highlight only the column and row that you wish to be highlighted then .. use the formula =cell("row")=row() instead. Then on the view code use activecell.calculate, and save it using Microsoft Excel Macro-Enable Workbook(*.xlsm)
