Some good reminders about compression, and extension

It's funny when I was a beginner I was obsessed with getting topspin. As an advanced player, I'm obsessed with hitting a more powerful flatter shot. Like crushing an inside-out or down the line forehand. These are so different. And rarely coaches teach the crushing flat shot. Everything is centered on topspin.

Yeah I think if it was taught better people would be able to have more variations in their ball.

Very clear and easy to listen to. I can imagine that sometime in the future a Mk2 Topspin Pro will incorporate a device which will show the rpm of the ball you have hit, so you get instant feedback on the spin rate. On another matter good to see that your serving on-edge lesson is now used by other online instructors.

Man that would be a cool addition! Thanks for the comment but hopefully basics like the racquet coming around in edge were instituted by forces other than myself. Shame it took so long.

Thank you for this video. This is exactly what I have been looking for in terms of a good technical explanation. I consider myself a student of the mechanics of ground strokes and I was taken in by your comment on being a fan of ball striking. I am new subscriber! Please keep up the good work! I have a Topspin Pro so again, this is useful info for a passionate player.

You're very welcome! Thanks so much for subscribing! I think the little things make all the difference in this game. Let me know if it helps you strike cleaner!

@@JeffLewistennis So to answer your question, the lesson did help earlier today. I played against a club opponent who is younger than myself and I was able to be competitive against him. He commented that my strokes were "heavier" as well as more consistent. I noticed we had longer rallies, often causing him to make an error as he became frustrated. We played three full sets where he normally will beat me in 2 sets.

@@UNC4LifeMD That’s great to hear. Usually people fluff quite a few balls into the ground when they first try it as they’re not really used to being able to hit through the ball. Glad it worked so quick for you!

Good technical video. I had trouble hitting through the ball (in addition to the spin I could hit easily) until my coach explained it to me this way: “carry the ball through the stroke” similar to the “throw the racket” concept. Still add the same amount of vertical path to the stroke to get the spin but rotate the shoulders and push through the ball more as well. Totally changed my game for the better and helped me become more consistent.

Yeah That’s a good cue. I’ve also heard pros say “hold the ball on your strings”. Pretty counter intuitive for people who like to whip the forearm. But it works! Thanks for commenting.

The grip (eastern or semi-Western, etc.) are different in that matter. Racquet weight is also a factor.

you are right about rolling over the ball, but Dr Gordon has proof of how the action of the ISR, elbow and wrist starts prior to contact.... not at or after...
@JeffLewistennis2 жыл бұрын
I don’t doubt the shortening cycle can begin before contact. What exactly did I say to the contrary? My argument is although those movements can be measured I doubt they occur as a last second conscious effort rather than a result of anatomy coming back into place.

The top flap seems to encourage a bit of “wristy ness”, I’ll remove that! Thanks!
@JeffLewistennis2 жыл бұрын
Definitely. In their defense they do say somewhere that the flaps are to guide the racquet face angle not the swing path. I actually got to email with the inventor and recommended that he make the ball protrude more and make the flaps smaller with more flex.

@@JeffLewistennis I’m so impressed with him, he’s been talking to me as well! Wonderful person who is really invested in this! I’m anxious to see what he comes up for with his serve adapter that he’s working on for this!
