Biggest mental tip that helped me with the driver is DONT target the ball. Focus on a natural swing as if the ball wasn't there, let the club make the contact and carry it. Then you just focus on where that contact during swing is. You're not hitting the ball, you're mastering a swing that hits the ball at the right time.

Swing your swing, don't swing to hit the ball. Let the ball get in the way of your swing. I heard Charles Barkley say something like that.

Todd, I watched this video to get some pointers, even though I'm not actually a "new" beginner. I'm am "old" beginner. By that, I mean I'm 70 years old, very stiff, a bit of arthritis, and I've only been playing for 2 years. I play at least once a week, rain or sun, hot or cold, and I walk the course. I'm in better shape today than I was 20 years ago. I watch a lot of instructional videos, including yours, on a regular basis. All the advice in your video is very basic - I've heard it before. And then at the end, you talked about BALANCE - about holding in the finish position. Bingo. This is something I have trouble doing. When I do it, I know that I've hit the shot well. Usually I'm off balance, even if the shot is OK. All the advice I hear about grip, stance, swing mechanics, etc has helped me play better. But what has really helped me are stretching exercises - getting in touch with my muscles. And the one exercise that's helped me the most is standing on one leg for long periods, and regaining my balance. Thank you for emphasizing this point.

The thing I appreciate most is the way you break everything down. Being able to see you do it from the front, as well as the side view, is tremendously helpful. I feel like most of the time, other videos talk too fast or you can't really make out the shot from the angle its shot at. So thank you for finally helping me to understand these basics concepts!

This couldn't be more clear and concise! Most videos are so confusing and go into a bunch of mumbo jumbo that confuses people and deters them from playing the game. I've learned in my journey that it's about enjoying the process. The body will adapt and eventually learn how to properly do things and make necessary adjustments. I couldn't hit an iron for jack initially and then the concept just came to me one day. Practice, practice, practice and don't try to "kill" the ball. Swing decent, be in balance the club will do the work.

@@USGOLFTVshow My pleasure and thank you for the reply. I think that ultimately, I would love to see a segment on how to fade and draw balls. I understand why they are used in certain situations but everyone seems to have their own interpretation but they dont show exactly how to implement the strategy. For example, in table tennis, I can get spin by slicing the ball fast from top to bottom. Is the concept the same or just merely about foot positioning that's not in line with the face of the club. Everyone makes it confusing. This would help a lot. Thank you for asking

I was consistently hitting nice shots for my first time. My farthest landed at 180 yards and rolled to 200 or so. I also called out shots before taking them and landed on target. Thanks Todd. Balance is something I find really difficult to do. I almost always tend to step off my lead foot and turn my body and face the ball immediately after I strike it. Which leads to to ball going in ANY direction, but usually a slice. I’ve recently discovered that keeping my left arm as straight as possible eliminates some of my slice, but my balance is the main culprit. I’m going to try slowing the swing as you suggested to see if I can stay put after hitting the ball.

Todd, your tips make sense to me as an "experienced golfer". However, tip #2 presents another problem for me. When I take back my driver on a higher plane, my return swing tends to come over the top making it more difficult to hit the ball squarely. My guess is that I am not initiating my downward swing from my hips. So, my return swing comes over the plane, rather than under as I have been told it should. Hope this makes sense to you. Again, thanks for the tips.

Todd, I’m a beginner and it’s seems that every time I hit the driver in the correct spot, it goes up the middle and then just rapidly goes to the right. I’ve tried twisting my hands clockwise, I’m right handed, and it’s still looks like I can’t send it down the middle. Like I said I’m a beginner and don’t really have the complete coil on my body so I stick to small half swings for now. I also noticed that my driver has an adjustment of degrees, now it’s at 12 deg, would it make a difference if I lower the degrees? Maybe 10? What can I do to hit it down the middle? Any pointers?

Best advice for beginners for hittng driver is don't do it! Use a hybrid or 5 wood for tee shots ( around 19 degrees of loft) so the back spin overcomes the side spin ( hook/slice) . When you can always hit the fairway with the 5 wood or Hybrid, then maybe try a 16 degree 4wood of the tee for a while, and eventually maybe a driver with 12 degrees of loft./ 43-44 inch shaft only. Most off the shelf drivers are too long and hard to hit consistently.

Technically, the putter is the club with the least loft. LOL

How the heck do you hit it straight. I either slice it to the right or pop it up sharp left. Very frustrating.
