@John Watson not at all. Everyone makes mistakes and need a fact check from time to time. Regardless of his off field controversies, no one can take away from what he accomplished as a player. I would have loved to see him reach 700 before calling it a career. I've been impressed with him as an analyst but even more impressed with his channel so far. His outreach to fans show another side of A-Rod that many probably didn't know about. Would love to see him put out some videos on defense and stealing. That would be good. Maybe stretches, drills, and personal conditioning routines.

You’re misunderstanding. It’s not about what you’re actually doing, but what you’re feeling. What you feel in your swing is what changes. Swinging down on the ball doesn’t literally mean chopping, it means it should kinda feel like you are. It means instead of raising the bat to the ball to achieve the angle, follow through to that angle

The pitches usually come like downward from a slope to the plate, coming from higher elevation; the mound and pitchers height. If you swing down, more likely you hit a ground ball; unless you hit the lower half ofvthe ball, this creates back spin for a gapper; good luck on that. The fact is that MLB players don't get paid for hitting grounders, but hitting head high line drives for gappers (doubles, triples) or home runs. So in order to do that is by matching the incoming plane of the incoming baseball; that is swinging slightly upward the slope; controlling legs, hips, arms and bate. But not like swinging a golf club. Most of the current MLB players hit like that; slightly upward. Including Jose Altuve, just watch his slow motion hitting videos during the game and practice. -Cheers

I did not elaborate, however, on the bate entering early in the zone and staying there for a long period of time with slight upward angle, thus maximizing the chances to hit the ball by having multiple points of contact in such hitting zone. Sorry but both of you are wrong. You just don’t rlly know what you’re talking about. Yes when watching a video it appears that they may be swinging flat or up to the ball. But they are still trying to hit a ground ball to the pitcher. In order to hit home runs you must first be able to control low line drives and have a downward bat path. Mike trout hits home runs that the shortstops can jump up and make a play on. Home runs are just line drives with clean backspin. In order to achieve back spin you must have a downwards angle

One of the best videos and explanations out there for young baseball players. My son is a high school player and the school coaches and many travel ball coaches believe in this launch angle swing. All it did was ruin my son’s hitting approach. Takes a while to get him out of that mentality but now he’s showing signs of being back on track and hitting the baseball hard, creating backspin, and getting the line drives.

A-Rod, the "barrel up" or "swing down" swing that you are demonstrating fascinates me because of the career hitting success you had. How does that swing relate to specific pitch heights and pitch placements for example: the low, belt high, chest high, inside, middle, and outside pitches. If you could demonstrate what the "down swing" looks like on the various pitches throughout the zone as opposed to just a fastball right down the middle, I think many people would benefit! I have so many cousins growing up playing (we are a baseball family) and I coach them from time to time and they are always trying to hit home runs and swing with that launch angle because those big hits impress the coaches and they forgive all of the mistakes in between. A great player doesn't often have INSANE plays/hits because they don't need to. We need to expect more from our coaches. Great video.

To anyone having a seizure because he said "swing down" please take it down a notch. Coaching is a skill just like hitting and both take time and practice. The guy has been busy playing the game his entire life and will need some time to perfect his coaching chops. Sorry haters, a-rod will eventually be a great coach. He has the enthusiasm, charisma, but most importantly he has an mlb career he is willing to reflect on, analyze, and offer insight to anyone listening. A-rod is 1st in career grand slams but also 5th in career strike outs. That makes him well qualified to talk about the importance of contact hitting vs the importance of launch angle. Ignore "swinging down" for the moment and focus on his message. It's not easy to have a long mlb career and be 5th all time in strike outs. No one talks about how he got to that position. He realized the problem started between his ears. Once he has more experience articulating the technical details of his game he will be able to help hitters understand exactly how your brain effects your swing. Until then all you need to understand is it takes very little effort to break your swing mechanics and a lot more effort to repair it if you're lucky enough to figure out what's broken.

A-Rod's point about "swinging down" is actually important and good. He just exaggerates the motion and kind of oversimplifies his explanation of it in my opinion, hence everyone's confusion in the comments. It's possible to start by swinging down but by the end of the swing be swinging up and barreling the ball. The idea of swinging down at the beginning of the swing prevents dipping the hands and the back arm, which produce the kind of extreme launch angle that A-Rod is warning of.

Joe Cahill Band not arod. This is not what is done in actual games. Even the examples he shows of players that make a lot of contact do not swing the barrel down to the ball. The hands go down to the ball, but not the barrel. This teaches people the incorrect way the bat should come through the zone to create contact.

I was fortunate enough to have great coaching when I was younger. I was never a HR type of hitter but I can put the ball on the fence with one bounce. It came off the bat FAST. One of the main things I was taught was to have a leveled swing. Hands to the ball, head down, and make solid contact. I’m way too old to play now but occasionally I’ll take a few swings and not much has been lost. Except what was once a double is now a base hit.

You have to hit down on a golf ball for the ball to go up because the club you're hitting with has loft which dictates the arc of flight. Hitting down on a baseball and pushing the barrel? Not so much. Matt Antonelli has a great video on why this video is not accurate. Look at all of ARod's swings during his career and NONE OF THEM look anything like the swing down motion he's doing in this video. If you're barrel is going straight down to the ball, how can you hit a ball with any power or accuracy? The barrel would not be in the hitting zone for any length of time to insure solid contact. A six foot tall pitcher is standing on a mound and throwing to a catcher that is squatting...……..to match the plane of the downward angle of the pitch, you HAVE to swing slightly up to insure that when your bat is coming through the hitting zone, you have the biggest area of contact even if timing isn't perfect. Great player but horrible video.

A Rod u are wrong..1st off launch angle is a measurable. Its not a swing. Every batted ball has a launch angle. And 2nd off the barrel or the hand path is not a ferris wheel swing . The Farris wheel move is front shoulder works up back shoulder works under. The barrel stays tight to the shoulder through the turn. And by the way he doesn't swing down. U maintain posture and shoulder tilt throughout that's what gets the barrel behind the ball and allows you to work up through it slightly.

Alex. I think you were one of the greatest players ever and still do. So, please don't take this the wrong way. The style of swing you are teaching in this video here is not how you actually swung when you had success in MLB. I actually saw my high school coaches teaching this approach of swinging down on the ball and it destroyed one of our best home run hitters. It completely destroyed his hitting ability. Former MLB player Matt Antonelli did this comparison video of you hitting in a game and this style you are teaching. The style that made me successful was similar to the swing you actually used in a game, not this style that everyone wants to push and teach. We still love you Alex. You're still the man. I've watched Matt Antonelli before and I love how he teaches different styles of hitting. He's right on matching pitch paths or pitch plain whatever he calls it BUT Alex is right too. There are awesome hitters, HOF hitters that concentrate on driving down on the ball but the down emphasis is their HANDS, NOT THE BARREL. When they show the barrel chopping down like that it's really just their hands at the start. Every swing has a downward start and an upward finish with the hands. Launch angle is just the result of the bat contact. Launch angle really bothers the drive down guys like Arod and Puljols or a Mike Schmidt who concentrate on driving down to the ball on every pitch but every good hitter drives down to the ball and makes contact just as the swing is going back up. To say that hitters need to drive down to the ball , is a true statement. And hitters need to match the upward pitch path to ensure good contact is also a true statement. Both happen on every hard hit ball. I've got slow motion swing path break-downs on Tony Gwynn, Mike Trout, Barry Bonds, Mike Schmidt, Mark McGwire... tons of guys and all of their hands go down and make contact going back up.

As a former scout and having coached hitters, this is 100% accurate. Baseball goes through this redesigning the wheel about once every 7-10 years. This swinging up using the back elbow is only going to lead you to the feast or famine ARod just spoke about, and 99% aren’t good enough to make it work enough to play professionally

I’m going to have to disagree with you there. He does what he says. You think down, and that’s where the first movement is but, then the swing (a good swing) levels out through the zone. His swing is not exactly what he is showing because he is not going through the whole motion. When you incorporate the movement of the lower 1/2 in real time, there is the initial downward movement which then levels out, and finishes above the waist or higher, depending on the player and his approach, physicality, and what he is trying to do on occasion. There are a few who have gotten away with something different but, that’s not the norm. Many a great hitter will overemphasize in their head what they are doing to compensate so it is a level swing through the zone, to compensate for what the body does in a swing. I would advise everyone to ignore the “finish”. Focusing too much on the finish will create bad habits and from an analysis standpoint, fool one on what is actually happening with the swing

Can you overlay your example of “swinging down” with a video of one of your actual at-bats? Your explanation doesn’t seem consistent with the game footage, but maybe I’m missing something. I think world class hitters sometimes think they are doing one thing when in reality they’re doing something quite different. I get that’s what you “feel”, but I don’t think the video backs it up. Wet x Liquid correct! Most players have a mental approach which helps them with their swing. A-Rod’s mental approach was to swing down and this helped him. Yet when it came down to it, he never translated his mental approach to his physical swing. Yet most players preach their mental approach and teach people to use the mental approach as their actual physical swing. In other words they think they are doing something which they are not. If you watch Bergman explain his swing, he expressed that he used his mental approach to move his hands forward yet he understand he doesn’t actually do it when hitting a live ball.

Absolutely love this video.Young kids have a tendency not to listen when lessons and constructive criticism comes from their parents,but being able to show them the video and say “hey,what did I tell you about hitting straight to the ball”,especially when it comes from a Major league player,is priceless...With having 2 boys who play baseball I became a huge baseball lover,a true baseball mom,learned the game inside out and keep on learning.I always say that I would take a contact hitter over a home run hitter (power hitter) any time of the day.Line drives all day long.I see these young boys who consider themselves a power hitters strike out a lot,when they make a contact (if they make one),they got a bomb but a lot of times they strike out,their on base percentage super low. I remember someone telling me that your swing plain should look somewhat like the Nike logo, down to the zone then slightly up to the ball, if you square up a ball swinging like this you crush it.

@@brandonyankees1 100%, if you do nothing but swing for the fences you strike out way more than you should. When hitting you should be hitting for the situation, leading off an inning? Try to get a base hit or walk and trust the people behind you to keep things moving. Baseball requires physical strength, but it also is affected by mental things as well. Getting runners on base messes with the pitchers rhythm and will make him more inconsistent. This results in mistake pitches which can be driven for extra base hits and RBIs, I think this is a bigger thing they should coach in baseball instead of just going off of one dimensional hitting.

Launch angle is a result of hitting the baseball and not a type of swing. Every single baseball that is put in play has a “launch angle”. The problem that Arod is trying to resolve is the inconsistency of ones bat path being too vertical through the hitting zone.

Notice how the barrel drops in a counter-clockwise motion behind his back leg before flattening out through contact. He's not chopping down at the ball. He's also hitting low line drives off a softly-flipped pitch, so this swing has less uppercut than his game swing. If you compare what Arod is doing in this video to his actual game swing you'll see just how different it is, but it does feel like you're swinging down when you do it properly. What he's actually doing in games is twisting the barrel rearwards by rotating the wrists clockwise if you're a righty which is different from the movement he's making here. The barrel does go down but if you actually tried to swing like Arod does here in a game you would hit endless grounders. But from a "feel" perspective it does feel like you're swinging down.
