Nice! Glad you mentioned throwing the edge. That helps me on all serves. One thing that is maybe not a pro thing but helps me is… Since the fundamentals of a serve are the same you can mix the amount of ‘kick’ you use. For example instead of a 100% kick serve you can add a little bit of kick (spin) to a first serve for better safety. Sometimes 50-50, 75-25, etc. Just slightly adjusting can lead to lots of variations of amount of spin you want if that makes sense so your first serve has more safety, but still has a good amount of pace. A guess you could call it a 1/2 kick serve. Lol.

Great video, brother. Serve is my natural shot I haven't needed to work as much on, but haven't developed my kick too much yet. This is informative, I think more 7-1 than 7:30-1:30 to get the higher bounce would be better for doubles to follow it in and get more time.

This is a superb serve lesson. What you said about Rafter, with his combination of hips vs shoulder counter twist, and his forward toss into the court(30%) to produce such a wicked kick, I certainly did not know that. I think now that I am beginning to understand, Ben Sheldon does something similar. Not coincidentally I suppose, he seems to have the best kick serve out there right now.

Another very helpful breakdown and explanation of all the techniques involved. The most helpful for me and most definitely the rationale behind this is the position of the elbow/forearm of the non dominant arm at and after contact. It does make sense that it act as a counterbalance. Another benefit of this for me personally is it will minimise my trunk to open up more than it should. Thank you so much.

Freund hits an inside-out serve, which has to be hit with a forehand grip. I was self-taught as a kid and hit this type of serve in high school (not nearly at that pace, of course) in the late 80s. I wasn't a great player by any stretch of the imagination, but got a LOT of hate (and free points) for a weird motion and lefty spin from a righty player. Try to hit it now and it makes my shoulder hurt because it's a crazy unnatural motion.

ball toss is the more important than anything; if your toss isn't right you will not get rotation or leg push
@sonofmagni31928 ай бұрын
Not specifically a kick serve issue but, something I discovered that I NEVER see anyone discuss is a mistake that 99% of all club players make. You have a strong leg drive, but all that energy is wasted because the timing is wrong. Players start the arm upward motion at the same time the start their leg drive, WRONG! Your racquet hand should stay still while your shoulder moves up, loading up the muscles and tendons in your arm like springs. Then start your arm motion when the leg drive is at least half complete. So, legs first, then arm. Watch slow motion of some top players and you'll see this, and when you try it yourself you'll find that free power that you've been missing. Thoughts?

How to do kick serve? There are these points and those points you must do, like all the pro have done, which are shown by demos. This is a collection of many important points/techniques you must do. Sorry, you get confused? just repeat those points, you will have a powerful kick serve. Even though the guy in this video did not show the true kick serve himself but just topspin serve.

If you are older forget about this.Not worth shoulder surgery.I know.
@bulaia20077 ай бұрын
Although this may be true for some. It is not a good general representation of older players who understand the mechanics. If most of the work is being done from rotation, then the serve motion will incorporate the shoulder as a part of the kinetic chain. If not, the serve is definitely more shoulder-centric. It has more to do with what the athlete understands and executes vs. the age.
@absolutelynothingtoseehere11 ай бұрын
This video, like most others, spends the least amount of time on the most important issue, racquet orientation at ball contact and how to achieve it. Everything else is detail. I've watched a dozen videos now and I still don't really know how to do this.
@idcharles373910 ай бұрын
Agreed. This is a really tough one. I always think "work back from contact". First - "where do I want the ball to be when I hit it?" The racket head can be in only one position. Then I think "what do I want to do with my wrist?". Then "ok. So that tells me where my elbow needs to be" and so on. If you have the correct grip and you understand what you want your wrist to be doing at contact, then this means you can only have one shoulder position. Ok, so how do you get your shoulders into that position?
