Roscoe Tanner, who was 6'0, served 150mph with a wooden racquet by tossing the ball low and far in front of him, and having a fluid whip-like movement with constant acceleration, not stopping or even slowing down at the "trophy pose". Why has nobody re-created that serve? What would Opelka or Isner do with that movement instead of theirs?

03:25 "Federer toss drops between one and two feet before contact". Can you give more info on this? I find it MUCH more difficult to toss two feet versus one feet, or even 1.5 feet. What is Fed doing on a flat serve? Dropping 1.5 feet?
@Whisper5553 жыл бұрын
The ball toss is what controls your timing and rhythm on the serve. Once you have the base mechanics in place, the ball toss placement will be individual for your serve style and speed and without seeing your serve a fair bit, it is pretty much impossible to say categorically what will work best for you, but copying what somebody else does, even if they were the best player in the world may not work for you EVER!
@akin19893 жыл бұрын
@@Whisper555 Excellent comment
@JamesDavisakaRemguy3 жыл бұрын
@@Whisper555 (Ditto Akin) good comment. Why would Federer's toss matter to someone else's individually-determined, "ideal toss"? I suppose if you happen to be Federer's genetically identical CLONE, brewed in some underground fortress in Switzerland... Note: He does mention in the video to experiment with the three toss factors (height, depth, arc) until you can get your toss to your own preferred contact point, as described in the preceding vid.

People completely misunderstand why the ball toss is the most important part of the serve. When you are a beginner-Intermediate player it is simply a game of maths. If you serve 100 times, but only have 20 decent ball tosses, not only have you only practised your serve 20 times, 80 times you have practised a bad habit of hitting a poor ball toss with the associated poor mechanics to accommodate those 80 out of 100 poor ball tosses. When you are an intermediate-advanced player and trying to develop the nuances of the serve, speed, spin, height and placement, having a consistent ball toss is crucial to developing these serve characteristics and attributes. Once you are an advanced to elite player and coach, which everyone on the KZbin comments clearly are, then as you are all aware the serve becomes all about timing and rhythm, with technique although important, is no longer relevant to you, as you know that you achieve a consistent result primarily from timing and rhythm which your ball toss in the key component.
@jemand84623 жыл бұрын
okay, here's the result of this video in 1 sentence: topspin, flat and slice serve are all the same with the same toss and the same motion. learned nothing here. I don't even see the differences in the comparison videos.

I'd give ANYTHING for a, "You are NEVER going to be an ATP pro so let's look at a good-enough, repeatable serve for you, a normal human with a day job." Make that video, call it, "Serving for 40+ Rec Players with Jobs" and get 1,000,000 views. Because I can't do this serve for an entire match. It wears me out.
