This is one of the best explanations of hitting a slice serve, bar none. Simon explains not only where on the ball to hit (i.e., between 1:00 and 2:00 o'clock), but takes pains to differentiate between hitting around the edge, and - correctly - hitting on the front face in the 1-to-2 o'clock zone, after the racquet begins to open up (pronates). Too many videos on YT ignore this subtlety entirely. Well, done Simon.

"But that is just a working mental image for the contact point on the ball in a slice serve." Yeah, no kidding. "Rather the REAL correct spot of the (first) contact on the ball should be somewhere nearer four or five o'clock and from there upwards or towards 10-11 o'clock." That's your opinion, period. Regardless of what AA may proclaim, an overwhelming number of pros and instructors advocate a 2:00 to 3:30 contact point. Crucial to understanding this range is that some players are tall enough to hit somewhat downward, while many cannot.

Am I missing the part where Jack says this is for a lefthander? Unless I have forgotten how to read my watch, from 4 to 10 has you hitting from right to left. Pretty hard to do for a righty, unless you throw the ball MASSIVELY over your head and somehow hit a reverse kick. Impressive! Then you call the Guinness people, register for the World Record, and then promptly drive yourself to the hospital, 'cause you're gonna need major back surgery, and STAT!

I take a lot of lessons and check out videos from time to time to try to pick up some additional insights. Your videos are exceptional. I've learned more from them than from any other internet source. Just wanted to say thanks and keep up the great work. Really excellent explanation of technique and contact point for the slice serve! One thing about the single position ball toss. Pete Sampras is often cited as the finest example the single position ball toss for any serve technique. Yet in an article on serving which he did for Tennis magazine years ago, he mentioned that this was one of the most exaggerated stories about this game. He stated that even he used different toss positions since this helped to increase the degree of spin for each serve type. However, what was important was to keep it sufficiently close so that it was hard for opponents to get a read on it; ie: choose a balance between increasing the spin vs keeping the disguise. I suppose what he felt he did might not be what his opponents saw! Boris Becker certainly said on more than one occasion that Pete had one of the most unreadable serves he ever played against!
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 4 жыл бұрын
Sampras' toss was a rainbow shape, from the right side of his body to the left, in line with the baseline. He could make contact at various locations along that rainbow, keeping his toss the same for every serve yet allowing him the flexibility he wanted for different spins/serves

A nice way of describing how to hit the "FRONT (and not the SIDE) of the ball at 1 or 2 o'clock" is to imagine a SMALLER clock, smaller than the size of the ball itself, so that when you hit 1:30 say, you're striking the face of the ball and not the very edge. [WARNING: LONG MESSAGE FOLLOWS. READ AT YOUR OWN RISK AND PERIL] [*OR* WHEN YOUR BOSS IS LOOKING SO HE THINKS YOU'RE ACTUALLY WORKING] I'm curious as to what might happen if you actually tested this (small clock) idea out on a hapless and unsuspecting student. I'm thinking of creating a website for wheelchair tennis players as there is a real dearth (you know, like a paucity) of sites for the "sit-down game" (aka the SIDDOWN! game). Full Disclosure: I myself don't visualize a clock of any size, just a giant, and admittedly quite faint, arrow. Perhaps I should be the guinea pig myself, and make my visualizations more vivid, see what happens. You, in the meantime, try out my "Baby Clock"™ idea - free of charge (!) for the probationary period - and we'll trade info's - once you sign the NDA*, of course! (God, I'm such an @$$!) * non-disclosure agreement. Check out the alphabet soup this Wikipedia entry yielded: A non-disclosure agreement (NDA), also known as a confidentiality agreement (CA), confidential disclosure agreement (CDA), proprietary information agreement (PIA) or secrecy agreement (SA), is a legal contract between at least two parties, blah, blah, blah... Yikes, Ike! It's like a bowlful of that sugary-letter cereal we all ate as kids - well, except for the Russian and Greek kids, they all had ta - aaaw, SHUDDUP! ...and SIDDOWN!

Watched this once again. You hit some killer slice serves as they were good pace and bounced into the side fence. Just about as good as Sampras who would go to that power slice and back it up with a killer volley ( if it wasn't an ace). This is the best step by step instruction for the slice serve. Even ATP players should refresh themselves with this. I watch a lot of ATP guys serve crappy slice serves that don't go short in the box and hang up in the returners strike zone and get crushed. As an ex pitcher in baseball it's exactly like a hanging slider that gets shit on.. Lol😮😢😂

I'm just getting back into tennis 🎾 and this series of Videos honestly helps a great deal. The explanation and examples are insanely well done and I've been practicing the kick serve after watching this video yesterday in the afternoon. I'm not quite sure if I'm doing it correctly when it does come out. But, whenever it does go over the net it has this semi-high arc and quickly dips into a high bounce. Am I doing it correctly, or where am I going wrong if I am doing it incorrectly?

Hi Simon, great video. I have a couple of questions: 1. The position of the leading foot, should it be parallel with the base line? 2. Any tips for mastering the shoulder over shoulder move, I struggle with this? Cheers.

Hi Brian, the front foot can be positioned differently depending on: 1. Your stance, pinpoint, platform or hybrid 2. How much rotation you want with the lower body For the shoulder over shoulder action, it's something we cover in depth inside our Serve Revolution course, that would be your best resource for drills etc Thanks for watching. All the best Simon

Top Tennis Training - Pro Tennis Lessons Thanks for your response Simon. I have a platform stance and currently my leading foot is diagonal facing the net post. I’m getting a lot of lower body turn and finding on the slice the ball going too wide with plenty of net clearance.

On the deuce court, I always hit the slice serve to the forehand by tossing the ball straight above my head, occasionally slightly to the left which gives me a bit of kick as I am coming over the ball a bit more. I couldn't imagine tossing the ball out to the right to hit a slice serve. Of course, I understand that coaches teach beginners to throw the ball to the right but once you get the hang of it, you really want to throw the ball above your head and use a continental grip.

Did I say toss the ball more to the right in this video? I'm sure I was speaking about the string angle at contact
@BurnsTennis

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial No I am going along with what you alluded to, going from my experience. As you say, coaches usually suggest to beginners to throw the ball slightly to the right. That's what I was taught but as you say, once you get the hang of it you want to straighten up the ball toss. Very enjoyable videos by the way.

Good video and you have a pretty good slice serve from the deuce court with very good placement and control. When I try the slice serve from the deuce court it goes in the doubles alley if not out of the court.

Thanks for watching. If your slice serve is going wide, it probably means you are hitting the side of the ball (3 o'clock) too much instead of the upper right hand side (1-2 o'clock). Try to change the angle of the strings slightly as you make contact and you'll see a difference.

Whereas my natural swing tends to take the ball to the opponent's backhand, I struggle to slice wide to the forehand.
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial 7 жыл бұрын
@transklutz - Try to open the shoulders more prior to contact and aim wider. Common issue is slicing the ball but staying side on to the net for too long. You'll get the slice but not the width.

Simon, how do I also add a topspin component to the slice serve? I believe this is what you refer to as the "slick" serve in your other videos. I'd like to use this as my second serve. If I still make contact at 2 o'clock, there is no more room to go up to add topspin..

If you want slice and topspin, aim for 4 o’clock and carve up and across the ball
@henrylove514

@@TopTennisTrainingOfficial Thanks for the quick reply, Simon! By up and across, do you mean you make contact at 4 o'clock in front of the ball and then finish at 11 o'clock? Assuming the ball toss is at 1 o'clock, what is the swing path? Sorry to ask you again.

Great explainations but it'd be good if there were more slow motion parts. Also, which part of the raquette do you hit when you do a slice serve? Thanks!

Thank you for this! Am I correct that you don't pronate as much during a slice serve? Also, is it right if I do a "scooping" action at the end of my swing?
@TopTennisTrainingOfficial

You pronate less prior to contact but the top servers still pronate fully after contact 👍

Can you explain more about what you do right after contact? I was always taught to go around the ball at 3 and don't understand how approaching the ball on edge and then opening the racket face works. Wouldn't that lead to more of a kick if you're swinging from left to right after you make contact? How do you let your wrist snap after in a way that creates slice and brings the ball down?

One more request please. I am always a better player following viewing of your wonderful instructional videos. Despite trying to duplicate your motion, I still realize that my strokes, especially serves, are being powered by my arm and shoulder muscles rather than utilizing he stronger and bigger muscles of the core and legs. How do you "throw" your bigger muscles into the shots successfully? It is just a matter of time until I do severe damage to my arm and /or shoulder. Please help!

It’s a kinetic chain starting with your leg drive. Think about driving up with the leg power. That kick starts the chain. If you rely on shoulder and arm power, injuries will happen

Hi Raymond, hitting the ball from 8-2 o'clock is the method for a kick serve, not the slice. Aim to hit the ball at 1 o'clock for a good slice serve
