Hobble training your horse can help the horse understand and handle having their feet restricted. This is an advanced type of sacking out technique. It can save and help a horse so they will not hurt them self if they get caught up in wire, fencing or other things.
Horses work on pressure and release of pressure, in our domesticated world horses have to learn how to deal with many pressures such as being trapped in a stall or trapped in a trailer or having a saddle strapped down on their back, this is just another form of pressure that will help a horse learn.
Too many people think avoiding pressure and protecting the horse from pressure is helping the horse, it is the opposite, exposing a horse to ALL types of pressures will help the horse learn to accept pressure and not panic or react to pressure in a way that can hurt them.

Thank you so much for this video, Rick! You've explained exactly how to train a horse to be comfortable being hobbled. I've never seen a video as detailed as yours and giving such a good explanation of how it should be done, over a period of however long it takes, dictated by the horse. 'It's a process, not an event' to use one of your own quotes, which is a superb principle when it comes to introducing new things to horses. Mr T looks stunning in this video, absolutely gorgeous! Gone, but never forgotten! RIP Mr T xxx

@TheDrTim :You don't understand horses or hobbles, hobs are better than a bit/tie down/nails in a hoof.A bit causes pain.Horses are flight animals No shit If you read my site you might understand this.Anyone/Monty/Pat knows hobs is a great way to let your horse roam, eat & relax. The stat 9/10 only shows the 9 idiots that hurt a horse did it wrong.Horses are hurt everyday, some blame the bit,the horse, the saddle, the fence &YOU blame the hobs, don't preach ignorance using good horseman to impress

Your mindset is one problem. You say the longest he lets you hold his foot is 5 seconds. Who is training who? Hold that foot until he stops pulling it back and then YOU put it down the second he stops resisting. Then you are teaching him you will put it down if he relaxes.

Horses can break anything, but once they learn to be comfortable with them, they don't try to much. I assume if a lion jumped on them while hobbled they would break free. Depends on the hobble. Some idiots use chains, those won't break but will break a horse's leg or cut it off, so that is just stupid in my opinion. Chains and horses do not belong together, Period!

If you ride in the Snowy Mountains, Australia, it is recommended to hobble-train your horse(s) to keep them from escaping with the wild Brumbies if you are trail riding/camping. A saddled horse once ran away and it was found with the saddle embedded in its skin. It had to be shot. Hobble training, just like using a saddle/bridle etc is just another piece of equipment for training.

You are too closed minded to see the benefit. This is not mean and my horses love to graze when hobbled rather then being tied to a tree. This has saved many horses more than once when they get caught in a fence and wait for me to come get them rather than freaking out and cutting themselves up.

I can't cover every issue that can come up, I put comments that pop ups that explain why the horse is tied. The annotations do not show up if you view on phone. I say on my site and on this channel, don't do things because you see me do it, your horse, you actions, your responsibility, all horse handling is dangerous and in fact many states have a law that states if you handle a horse you accept the risk.

Well ysa.. in American history... a few of our Native American peoples, when they had their many fleet footed ponies.. it helped being hobbled when there was no fences or trees, as with the American cowboy, they hobbled the lead horse at night on long cattle runs, you had many horses, they play, "follow the leader".. an of course some other reasons for hobbling, but all pertain to holding the horse when ya dont have anything else, it has its worth, I think now just less reasons cause we Do have fences.. but I personally have tethered, and hobbled my horse.. overnight trail rides, they can still move about an eat, just cant get too far too quickly before you hear the ruckus an investigate yourself, (he doesn't fight his hobbles but he has shuffled with his front, very difficult for him cause hes hobbled, saves an all night chase for me lol I'm selfish an dont wanna chase my thoughbred in the dark woods... alone.. hehe nope not this lady

@ysabelle williams Just saw this vid & some comments. I wonder if you really listened to what Rick explained... Desensitising your horse and getting used to as many "unusual" situations as possible can never be wrong. You live in UK, so you might never have the chance to ride in "the Wild" as US-people, where you might not find something to tie your horse. I'm pretty sure any real horseman/woman has good fences; so why do you use this as argument several times? Do you only ride your horse in the area of your own fences? You'll never know to what you and horse may find confronted with, and I hope your horse never gets hurt concerning YOUR ignorence... Btw why are you so aggressive? Hobbling a person and beating him with big chains - is THAT your way to react when a person doesn't agree with you? Rude! Tell me: Do you ride your horse with bits, tie-downs and other painful stuff, like so many others in UK? Pretty sure your horse does NOT like THAT idiotical crap...

lol, wow, you could never be accused of being close minded. OK, I watched your video. I disagree, you had lead ropes hanging around, you were standing on a lead rope, you had spurs on, you had two horses that could feed off each other and get tangled up. In my opinion you put yours horses in danger and could have had a wreck pretty easy and the horse would have learned a bad lesson. Lots of ways to get results. I will agree that we disagree. Train your way and I will train my way. :)

RE: Iris Benson Can you explain your reason for leaving the horse tied?Seems like a person just watching this could get hurt between a scared horse and the post. Can you explain your body position and approaching the horse from the front? Watching this I see several opportunities for you to lose your teeth, especially since at times you are starting your approach from a blind spot. I am sure you know all this already but would be wise to show people good body position so they don’t get hurt

Soft cotton, make comfortable so the horse knows it will not hurt him, you can use any soft rope, at first thicker is better so it does not cut into him if he gets scared, then the more you do then move to stiffer rope then any rope.

Rick . . . you know what impresses me most in this video, is Tanner's powerful stance. I watched his back during this demo and throughout, his back is like a steel beam! Is this dicipline available to this degree in any breed? I've seen many a stance but he is just so impressive. If Tanner ever needs a good home . . . I'm the guy! Is he about 15.2 or so?

Valid point, but I disagree with letting them jump around, that is what I consider 'old' sacking out and creates fear and does not remove it or try and help the horse learn to deal with his fear.

Just curious Rick to my understanding a horse shouldn’t learn to move forward with hobbles on because they will still push through a fence to get free if caught up in it, only backwards or sideways. Why is your opinion or training different in allowing them to go forward? Really just a question out of pure curiosity. Thanks. Can you please, please, please do a video on ground tying a horse. Thanks again. Never mind I found your video on that 😉
