Sacking out a horse is about removing fear and not creating fear. By showing a horse it can get scared, the horse learns that it does not have react instinctively to it's fear. This also teaches you to read your horse so you can understand what your horse does when scared and how it handles fear. www.thinklikeahorse.org

I am a 60 old woman who adopted a wild Mustang 2 years ago. Using patience, trust building exercises, and your common-sense, honest, and mindful approach to training my horse, I now have a horse who would follow me into hell! Not that I'd ever ask him to! The women who send 'hate mail', must simply not understand a wise approach to training their horses!

You just totally enlightened me in a way with the following point: Getting horses used to objects, sounds, etc. is not just about desensitizing them, but mainly about teaching them that I can take away whatever scares them, I am in charge and they can look at me for comfort. Thank you!

Great video, 👍 Thank you so much Rick. I wan't quite ready to see Mr T again in a video. My heart still bleeds for him. Such a proud, powerful, gorgeous Mustang! And of course Buddy was being Buddy at the start of the video and kept yanking Mr T's leadrope behind your back - how can anyone not love Buddy!

@jetscasa : Make your own video if you know so damn much and stop watching mine. You are obviously one of the "knowitall" horse people I talk about that are too narrow minded to see success when it happens in front of you. If you are so right, why did my horse not pull back? You my dear is a prefect example of another horse person giving stupid advice when you don't know what you are doing.

@horseawareness I was just on your website reading your advice, and have never heard someone say "learn by just going and doing it" so many times. It really got me past my mind set of searching for one quick answer, or that one solution, or that I could 'read' my way to being a good rider/trainer. Your advice really helped me move on and improve in so many different ways in life! Thank you!!

Mr. T was an absolutely beautiful horse. I didn't realize the history of the wild mustangs and how they bred with different horses. Very interesting and thank you for the explanation. BTW was Mr. T bigger than Buddy...cuz he looks bigger in this video but maybe that's his thickness. And one more question: how do they brand with white lettering?? TY in advance 😊

You remind me of Mr. Rooster in the round pen when you remind us that if the horse is doing what you want, in this case not reacting, then stop. You're done. Don't keep on and on with it thinking more must be better, and risk a horse who'll fight back against the annoyance. When you say you find things to scare your horses, it reminds me of a dog trainer I worked with who said to the class, "You do your dogs no favors by living in very quiet, peaceful homes. They'll be afraid of every noise they hear. Make noise! Drop things! Rattle things!" Yes, she was speaking specifically to the single women who live quiet lives with dogs. But their dogs are basket cases out in the world.

Good video, but the horses were tied not sure thats best the best approach. What would happen if someone copied that with a young horses first time ?? Would it not be safer on a lead line ?

Ooops, the horse is tied to a board on the fence, instead of a solid post or other safe object. A fence board can break or pull loose, at which time it is still attached to the horse who is now potentially freaking out, running away, and the board is chasing it and beating up its legs. I'm sure Rick's horses are quiet and calm and will trust him to take care of any scary situation, but it's something to be aware of when demonstrating equestrian safety. I love your general philosophy, Rick!

Stop being silly, I have seen pigs and horses together and seen one pig that was to close to a horse that when the pig got scared it would run under the horse for safety and the horse would allow it just fine.

I have a Cleve Wells Video where he sacks the horse out with a sack! Novel idea. seriously, I think he uses like a feed sack filled with hay or old twine. The cool part is it is a large sack so the horse really gets desensitized. Two weeks ago we had a horse spook at a 4H horse show and a little girl broke her arm. The horse didn't bolt away, just a foot or so. Wish all the 4Hers were required to sack out their horses!

OOPS! Please disregard my criticism of the tie. Now that the video is farther along, I can see that it's a very solid-looking hitching rack. My computer is v e r y slow to load videos today, so I made the comment after just seeing the initial frames and it wasn't obvious that it's a good, solid hitching rack. Even after posting that comment and while typing this one, the video is still only showing at 2:31. Good advice!

@jetscasa You can obviously see that the horses are tied with a quick release knot (or something along the line of that), and if they did spook they would easily come untied without harming them selves or anybody else. But you can see, these horses will not spook at much. People with sensitive horses should know not to tie the horses anyways. He only tied them for the demonstration.

This answered my question regarding your other video where:" Is It Better To Have a Horse Love You & Not Listen or to Have a Horse Listen & Not Love You Now?…" I was still wondering though, that but you removing the pressure (fear that you created), that the horse wont think that by pulling he can make you stop? Meaning to say that when he pulls the pressure will go away.

0:53 Buddy bein naughty haha! By the way, any reason you always work them together? When I work my horses, especially in join ups, it's usually alone. I never do join-ups with 2 horses because my neighbors big, shoed gelding was running with their arabian mare, got excited, and kicked her leg. It broke and they had to put her down, I was there and I'd never wanna see that happen again so I don't run the risk D:

@jetscase - @horseawareness - Jets, If you listened to rick, he said, he taught his horses to know that when they are with him, they are safe.. So weather he has them tied up or not, They know that they are safe, so there is no need for them to even think about rearing/getting hurt, They were comfortable around him, did you see either of them attempt to move, they Stayed calm, and secure, Like rick said, if you know that, why are you watching his videos? Get off his channel, Or grow up atleast.

Think Like A Horse Oh no! :( I wasn't telling od being rhetorical, I was truly asking. I remembered you saying in another video you wouldn't have a horse tied while doing this, but here you do for the purposes of recording a video. I guess I remembered wrong cuz I'm a dummy. I love your channel, your wisdom and what you do for horses. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I caught that too, and was surprised, but I think maybe because his goal was to NOT freak the horse out, the horse shouldn't have a reason to get overly excited if the sacking out is done correctly. To an extent, I think having the horse tied FORCES a person to really think and evaluate how the horse is responding to their actions. However, I did have a horse that snapped his leadrope when he saw a dirtbike far across the street driving around. Consequently, this showed me that he should not be tied until he's more sacked out.

Think Like A Horse over 35 years with horses, a grandfather working at the cavalry (first lesson, never ty a horse when you work him and never ty on halters that can not break!), 20 years of rehabilitating horses with physical and mental problems and running an instructor school, book published in 2 languages... yes, I would point out the dangers of doing this for the novices reading here, in the hope they will not try to copy you, with a huge risk their horses will hang themselves. But I guess we do things different in Europe. Good luck and good day.

Then you should know a properly prepared horse can do things that another horse cannot - making blanket statements like that snows inexperience and passes on bad and incorrect info
@JosephaGuillaume
@JosephaGuillaume 5 жыл бұрын
Think Like A Horse a horse is a horse. No matter what, always there can be a situation that causes a horse to spook. You can not control everything, say for instance a sudden lightning strike nearby etc. And even if your horses would never spook (for argument sake, again, novices will copy you. Apart from that, A horse should never be tied by the bit or with a halter that can not break. We teach our toddlers as much. Text book material in Europe. But our horse culture is just much older. Showing lack of experience, funny you should mention that. I do hope non of your viewers will find out the hard way, with horses paying the price, what can happen when a horse can not break free. Good day to you Sir.
