How you hold your reins has an impact on how well you can use them and therefore how well the horse responds to your requests. It doesn't matter whether you are doing dressage for beginners or more advanced dressage training how you hold your reins and how you use them is a basic skill that is worth taking the time to acquire.
In this video, I will give you horse riding tips on how to hold and use your reins. I will show you turn and how to shorten your reins without changing the contact on the horse's mouth. A dressage horse is required to have a quiet and consistent contact with the bit. You as the rider need to offer that contact in the correct way so taking the time to learn this horse riding basic will be worth the effort you put in. This should form a part of your dressage rider training until you can do it on automatic pilot.

If you don't hold your reins correctly you cannot use them correctly. If you don't use them correctly your horse has a limited chance of being able to do what you are asking him. I hope this video helps🙂

Love your videos, so helpful to me as newbie adult rider enthusiastic to learn and improve my communication with the horse as much as possible. The tip about the thumb in this video was a gem - I've been holding my thumb straight, and just that little adjustment to take that tension out of my wrist makes a real difference. Thank you!

Thank you for this .. as a young rider I somehow learned this the hard way and later on have gotten a lot of corrections from my teachers saying that I am "too gentle" with the horses and that a horse needs "strong connection with my hand" (by which they meant more pressure in the horses mouth) .. I even once got myself into a riding session with a lady that was determined to "teach me" on her mare .. it was a disaster - I refused to hold the horses head upright and the poor thing was stumbling for several minutes unable to find her ballance because she was used to so much pressure in her mouth that was suddenly "not there" .. I was so sad for her after that

As a young rider you have your lifetime in front of you. If you put the horses welfare at the forefront of your riding/training you will be in the right road. Thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment. I appreciate it 😊
