THANK YOU JARED! for explaining Jeremy Taggart's unique grip to me. I've been trying to figure it out since Naveed came out! Gonna start playing Taggart style every time I cover an OLP song!

Loved the lesson here; I'd just like to add that I tried gloves also- but found duct tape was the key to a secure grip. I just have a band-mate duct tape my hands to my sticks....about a half-roll worth, and it's been super easy to maintain my grip- and proper form!

Jared, and Drumeo professionals, I received my (pretty good) pair of Chinese manufactured drumsticks ordered from Wish, and have impatiently anticipated beginning drilling in the rudiments. What I've just noticed is that my grip strongly resembles how I use chopsticks. Is this right? I also get resistance in my left hand from feeling too tight a grip, but feel I can't relax it enough without my drumstick slipping. Is there an exercise I can do to mitigate this? Or can this be the subject of Another video? Thank you for your presence.

Like chopsticks, you mean both in one hand? Doesn't sound right to me...

If you're just starting out Vic Firth are a better option of sticks seeing as the Vic Firth American Flag is printed where the fulcrum is. As far as I know, this applies to all their sticks apart from their SD1 Hinge Stick as the hinge is where the fulcrum lies.

5:26 Jeremy Taggart Palm Grip - This feels way more natural to me, plus I eventually want to play massive arrays of e-drum pads and it looks like it'd give me access to the largest number of different pads. Anyone have opinions on it? Also, anyone know where I can find more info on it / if it has a technical name? Thanks! UPDATE: Found this from his Twitter with nice closeup pictures of his grip - twitter.com/Taggart7/status/573152027032879104?s=20 - based on that, it looks like the only difference is that he holds the stick with the butt end approx. parallel to the part of his palm closest to his body - the top fingering is the same, and in fact, he thinks it's really important to have the stick against the top of the index finger in order to avoid injury.

Does anybody have the same problem as me in that as I'm hitting the cymbal or drum with my right hand the stick seems to be moving forward up my hand a little. I don't want to grip the stick too tightly as I will lose bounce on it. It just seems the sticks slide around in my hand a lot. Thanks.

I'm still not getting the perfect way to hold one of the drumsticks properly . I'm right- handed and and was able to grasp and implement the technique with my right hand. Getting the perfect bounce . But I'm unable to get the same with my left hand. The second bounce hits my practice pad a few inches away from the first hit area .Because of this ,my single strokes are pathetic and am not able to make progress. Been practicing a for week now. Help!

after not playing for about 20 years I've picked it back up! but in finding my old faithful 5As to feel really light! any ideas?
@PenguinMcDuck5 жыл бұрын
It depends on how old you are now. If you were 20 years old and are now 40, and you found 5As to be really light, it could be because over the past 20 years, you exercised the muscles that you use for drumming. Nothing you can do about that other than switching to 5B or 3A etc. It could also be that your technique and approach to drumming has shifted since 20 years ago. Relaxed approach is THE approach, but some people learn it instinctively, some through relating it with other activities, etc... It could also be that you're not relaxed, hence why 5As feel really light. I don't know, because I use 5As all the time and never had a problem - even after not playing for a year or two.

Any tips to help prevent pain towards my thumbs over the last year or so It's been a lot harder to play faster like I used to be able to, even with stretching there's just been a lot pain on my hands even after trying to not have a monster grip on my sticks.
@willcochran55558 жыл бұрын
That sounds like a muscle problem, if it hasn't gone away I'd go to a doctor
@Reyes786 жыл бұрын
Look up symptoms for Tenosynovitis. If that's where it hurts, you are squeezing with your thumb too much and need many slow reps to relearn to relax your grip and play without unnecessary tension. Ice it at night before you go to bed too. I used to have that, and, while a doctor can give you a temporary cure if symptoms are very bad, they won't know the underlying technique problem and it will keep coming back unless fixed. If it's painful somewhere else, idk.

Pretty subjective topic but thanks for the lesson. Should look at how Gavin Harrison holds his sticks, odd and looks uncomfortable but the man can play like a god :)

There's a lot of wrong things in this video: - When you bring your hands up, you have an angle higher than 90 degrees between you're forearm and your arm, which means you're holding your forearm angle with the elbow. - You're winding up before a stroke, so you're not using the natural rebound of of the stick nor you are using the natural rebound of the drum head. - You're bending your wrist downwards when the stick hits the drum head. Once again, using muscular force to drive a movement that should be momentum based. - Zero information on how to develop the rebound stroke. - Zero information on other grips that aren't French or American. - Too much indoctrination and less information. ("This works for me and all my students, etc.") - Demonstrating a free stroke using Moeller instead of free stroke. Overall, I would stay with either Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons Volume I or The series of videos Danny Gotlieb has on KZbin instead.

I also think you shouldn't squeeze so hard on the fulcrum point as well let it loose but not to loose
@PenguinMcDuck5 жыл бұрын
Once you take your BPM past 80 (at 32nd-notes), it would be pretty difficult to keep your fulcrum as loose as you're suggesting here. Because you lose energy by keeping your fulcrum loose. That's the point of keeping the fulcrum loose; to let the rebound kinetic energy be released in some other way than absorbing it with your bones, joints, etc (other than having a good sound). But when you play faster and need your fingers to work the stick, having the stick bounce anywhere else means less force to work with. This is simple physics. Of course, you don't want to choke your fulcrum too hard so that it doesn't rebound at all.
