You can put foam elements into the figure when sculpting - later it will burn out. Operating time is reduced.

Thank you for your informative terracotta figure videos, I've just started to watch them. I'm curious, do you generally try to remove most of the wooden skewers before firing? Do you try to make sure the hole where the skewer was doesn't get squished, leaving an air pocket, and has an open hole left where it was to let air escape? Or do you try to squish the area where the skewer was to remove the hole/ air pocket? Thank you!

Thats a really good question. I always remove them before firing. If you leave them the water in clay shrinks and could cause it to break. If i remove the sticks i try to do it when the clay is still soft i can push it and get rid of the air bubbles. But the best solution i found is to sculpt with the sticks in, and as you approach completion pull them out and leave the holes there. It's pretty easy to fill the holes afterwards with plaster or better yet some air dry terra cotta clay. I might have to do a video on this there is so much to. Also if you use grog clay it makes it much better for firing.

Hello. Does sculpture need a wood base?
@SculptSome

No. I usually make the sculpts so the clay is the base. But wood bases are nice as well.

Thank you for the advice! I’m new to sculpting and clay in general. May I ask what would happen if you didn’t hollow the solid parts of your sculpture? Is there more risk of it cracking? Or not hardening all the way through? Thanks again for the tips. Love your work!

I've heard of sculptors firing them very slowly and being successful. But the clay shrinks when it drys, and when yo fire it shrinks more. So by hollowing it you would let it shrink without cracking and breaking. You need to vent the hole somewhere so the air escapes while firing. You can fire something solid if it's not too large and thick, but once it gets large you should get in the habit of removing the inside mid way into your sculpt. Hope that helps

How long does a sculpture like this take to make?
@SculptSome
@SculptSome 2 жыл бұрын
It depends. Maybe a week since im slow, but lots of people can do th em in a day or two. After sculpting you need to dry it out for about a week, and then 1-2 days in a kiln for firing. Afterwards you have to stain it or paint it, that could be a few days if you are layering it with color. More time if you use oil paint.
