What most homebrewers love most about hop harvest season is the chance to brew with fresh hops, and that's what this video is all about. We brew two batches of beer and show you what to consider when brewing a fresh hop beer (sometimes called wet hop beer) including when and how many fresh hops to add to your wort. #homebrew #homegrownhops #backyardhops

There is seriously nothing in the beer world like the smell of fresh hops on a brew day. One of the only good parts about summer coming to an end is a fantastic hop harvest.

What's the window between picking and using fresh hops again? Ideally the same day, but within 24 hours is still okay, right? Great video!

That sounds good. Maybe spread them out on a screen or at least some paper towel or newspaper (not stuffed in a bag) so that they don't start to rot or mold. But, I personally have picked, kept them in the fridge in a bag or spread out on paper and used them a day or two later.

Nice! Glad we could get the video out in time. It was a late harvest for a lot of home hop growers up in here in MN but most got them off the bine before the first frost (which was last night).

I'm not really an alcohol fan. I was just curious how Beers or Ales are made from hops since I play Stronghold Crusader and I've seen my Hops farmer gathering hops, my brewer lady taking the hops then turning it into a barrel of Ale.

Hops are used to bitter the beer when boil for a long time in the malty liquid. If they are added later in the process, you get more flavor and aroma benefit, not so much the bitterness. They are added to the boil kettle much like you would add some spices or herbs when cooking a soup or stew. Hope that helps!

One thing we should've mention in this video is that fresh hops are really nice when used at the very end of the boil or at flame-out for hop stand or whirlpool hops. You don't want to boil them for too long (like 15-20 minutes) because they can end up giving the beer an overly vegetal character. When you say 4-5oz fresh hops compares to 1oz pellet, are you talking by weight for both? My (dried) cones are pretty lightweight... 4oz is a lot of them! Thx for the video
@NorthernBrewerTV
@NorthernBrewerTV 4 жыл бұрын
We do mean 4-5 oz of fresh/wet hops for each ounce of dried you would use. Weight for both. If cones are already dried then you use the same weight as you would pellets. Does that help?

@@NorthernBrewerTV yes, thank you. We've seen a wide variety of answers online to this ratio question. My cones are dried, so I'll use less.

How long can the hops be stored before using? Do I have to brew the exact same day as I picked?

I've been growing hop bines for years, but have never used them in my beer making. When I first planted them, there were 3 different varieties (22 years ago)..... When I went to a "soaker hose" system for watering, all of the hops root systems followed the water along the soaker hose and now I don't know which hops is which. There are definitely some differences in the cones, but I really don't know what's what. You don't seem to mention specific varieties...... just wondered how important that really is when using "fresh" hops. Thanks for the video - can't wait until next summer's harvest - doin' it!!!

First of all, that's definitely a storied hop growing career! While it would be good to know the variety more than anything just to share that info with folks when they drink the beer, for fresh hops, it likely isn't that important as you're not going for bitterness here. You obviously have sort of a guessing guess as to what flavors you're getting, but I think it will be just fine. Considering how long ago you started growing them, I'd bet you might have Cascade and Centennial in the mix? This video included Chinooks, Cascades and Centennial. A local university agriculture extension might be able to help you ID the varieties via photo or if you took some cones to them.
