How To: Honda CRF300L/Rally - Zeta XC Handguard Fitting
This video is the replacement of the stock handguards on my 2021 Honda CRF300 Rally. The bars and guards are the same fitting for the CRF300L so this video can be used for both versions.
The stock guards are not particularly robust, and are so flexible that they are likely to cause the loss of a lever in the event of an off.
I have replaced them with the Zeta rails for taper bars and XC guards:

Just got mine on! Different issue with my stock handlebars though. Both ends were plugged with a solid steel plug a good 3/4” deep, threaded of course with a 6mm hole. Bit of extra work. Had to drill out the hole with a larger hole and re-tap with a M-8x1.25 thread tap. I then had to put an oversized SS nut between the handlebar and drop down arm to use as a spacer in order to get the clearance on the throttle grip. All in all it has worked out well and looks great 😊

Again great video, I have used your videos for tons of research to prepare for my rally. This time it was for the triple clamp bolt orientation (forward vs side). I may try the triple clamp mounts from Zeta for the handguards. Lots of pros and cons . Why did you go with bar clamps?
@PeakMotorcycles

Hi Brian, I didn’t know there was another option! The triple clamp fittings look interesting, but I’m not sure how well they’d work with the fat bar conversion risers. If you’re using a 22mm handlebar, then I expect they’d be ok. If you’re going to a 28mm bar and have the 20mm risers, I wonder if that lifts it too far from the triple clamp mounting point? I’d be interested to know how it works out though.

Broke my clutch lever last weekend so bought some zeta levers for my rally and picked up a set of zeta handguards today to protect my investment so this video is very helpful ! Quick question about the plastic washer on the throttle side , Is that from the already installed bar ends that come with the bike stock or something seperate I need to buy ? I'm not seeing one in my kit I bought
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
No, I don’t think it comes with the bike. On the L I think you have regular grips that cover the end. On the Rally there are bar end weights. I’m pretty sure the plastic washer came with the guards. It’s to have a low friction surface between the guard and the twist throttle. Maybe check the bag or see if it’s stuck to anything? I had to check twice for mine.

Hi Andre, great videos. I finally got my Rally and am putting on handguards. My question is around getting off the weighted bar ends. I finally got the black weighted ends off using the duct tape and brute force method. Once off, I found that in my handlebar tube ends are a silver receiver nut that's very tightly embedded in the tube somehow. I cannot see how to get them out. How did you get them out? I cannot install my handguards without removing this piece.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t. I switched my bars to the Renthal fat bars, and the inserts are still in my stock ones on a shelf in the garage. I appreciate this isn’t particularly helpful, for which I can only apologise. Choices for you (if the stock bars are the right height) are to get some other 22mm bars, the Renthal ones are rather good, as are the ProTapers. It saves weight and they are stronger. If you’d rather stick with stock, first make sure that the inner clamp for your handguards can attach without being constrained by the fixed cross brace on the stock bars. I know this didn’t work for some. If that bit is ok, then your choices for the end inserts are to drill them out or to re-tap them to the size of the bolts for your guards. I think re-tapping them is the better solution as they are fixed in really well. That said, I haven’t done it myself, so if you can find someone who has, they could say for sure. My apologies that I don’t have a full answer for you but that’s the best I can offer not having done it.

Hi Andre, put the Barkbusters on my 300 Rally yesterday. When I did the throttle side (right) I put the clamp connecting the handguard OVER (on top) of the brake line. Any reason that is bad? Just saw you did yours UNDER the line. You seem more experienced than me, but I can't see a reason why it being over the line would be a problem.

Nope, I think the brackets for each type of guard are different, so go with whatever snags the throttle cable the least. As long as that’s free (lock to lock) then either way is fine.

Hi Karim, I just unscrewed them. The initial handlebar was the original one, the new one is a Renthal fatbar (so I didn’t have to get the inserts out!). I have not installed the handguards on the original bar, in fact I don’t think they can be fitted, as the welded crossbar on the stock bar is about where the clamps go and the clamps on these guards are for a 28mm fatbar. Stock is 22mm.

Andre, looking to get these handguards for my rally. The only thing not shown in your video is the clearance between the handguard and windscreen lock to lock. I assume there was no problem. Also thinking of getting the front mounting (ZE71-1821) that goes on the triple tree, do you believe that would work. Saw a video from Jake TheGardenSnake where he installed them on the 300L

Hi Chris, the lock to lock windscreen clearance was the only near touching point. The front mounting looks interesting but I haven’t tried them I’m afraid so can’t really say one way or another. After this video I switched from 50mm to 20mm risers, but that actually brought the bar slightly closer to the screen (but there was still clearance).

Very nice job. Are those original bars? I like how you used a small breaker bar instead of a ratchet.
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Wayne, They are not the original bars. They are a Renthal 604 Fat Bar. I'm not sure you can fit these to the standard bars unless you can find a way to remove the weight threads from the ends, and you can find a clamping place that doesn't interfere with the cross brace. The cross brace is welded on the stock bar, so I don't think any would fit. The guards have the bar clamp to fit a tapered bar, so if you think you do have space on the stock bar, make sure you get the one for a 22mm bar.

Hi, I am currently driving the CRF 250 Rally and looking to change the stock hand-guard with a similar hand-guard as your in this video. I was just wondering that for the handlebar, did you have to change the handlebar because when i cut the end bit of my handlebar grip to insert the bolt that hold the metal bar for the handguard, the hole wasn't big enough so any advice on what I should do? Cheers mate!
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
Do you have inserts in the end of your bars? On the 300 Rally there are threaded inserts in the end for the bar end weights. If I’d used the stock bar, these would have needed to come out or be drilled and tapped. The Zeta guards did come with handlebar bolts in two sizes, one for alloy and one for steel bars. I guess due to wall thickness? All (ok, most!) bars are a 22mm outside diameter at the ends, and the metal makes the inner diameter vary. Did you get two sets of bolts with your hand guards?

How about the standard bars have Honda put those impossible to get out fittings inside
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
Not impossible, just nearly impossible. Though the standard bars are quite soft and will likely bend after a few drops so I don’t know of many people who have gone to the trouble of getting the inserts out. I think a few have drilled and tapped them to fit the bolts that came with their new handguards, but the fixed cross-brace means that a lot of aftermarket handguards won’t fit the stock bars on the inner end. If you don’t need the rise, get some Renthal or ProTaper 22mm high bend bars which have a very similar profile to the stock bar but are a lot stronger.

This is not a top speed motorcycle it is a dual purpose 300cc adventure bike. If you want top speed go and buy a sport bike

You didn't have to cut the ends off the grips? The ends are already open? If so, then wow, that's awesome - thumbs up to Honda for that! :)

I think they are for bar weights to reduce the vibration, but yes, you don’t have to cut the ends off too!

On the L the grips have to be cut off. Also, the throttle casing had to be cut off too.

Peak Motorcycles I fitted Oxford heated grips while I changed my bars today. I had to grind off the bumps on the throttle housing so that I could get the new grip on. Pain in the ass but simple enough to do...
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
@@ringonotts Yup, I think I'd have to do the same. I've some Acewell heated grips with an integral switch, so no separate controller, but I ordered an eBay special replacement throttle tube from China so I might be able to swap it without having to take the stock one off. There's definitely a few heated grip days coming up... Monday is supposed to be -3C here and only getting above 0 by lunchtime...

Where can I purchase Zeta products in the UK?
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I guess it depends on what zeta products. The handguards in this video came from dirt bike express and I put a link in the description. Their stock levels have been variable, so it might be what you can get. If it’s something else like footpegs or levers, they are harder to come by and Google is probably a useful start, though everything is difficult to find at the moment. Good luck.

Just a swollen wrist for me and some broken plastics on the bike. Was having so much fun I stayed out till dark, didn’t see a tree root or something that simply threw the front wheel away instantly. Wonder how much Honda will charge for the plastic bits 😳 On the subject of money do you want sell any parts you’ve upgraded on yours? (Hand guards and luggage rack I’m thinking)
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 2 жыл бұрын
@@richbrock9876 ouch. Both for the wrist and the plastics. I’ve found Bikerzbits to be the cheapest for the plastics. As for the bits from mine, pretty much everything not on the bike has been sold already. I’ve kept a few things, stock exhaust, bars, footpegs, toolbox, but all the racks have gone (am waiting for the Outback Motortek one) as has the Yamoto bash guard. The stock handguards went to a local who asked me about them after this video went out. Apologies. Running the channel is sort of expensive, and though it makes a bit of money now, it doesn’t get close to bike or bits costs, so I generally buy something, make a video, use it for a while and when something better/different comes along, switch it out, do another video, and sell the one I’m no going to use. As long as supplies are limited, I only lose £10-20 per item, and over time, the video revenue might recover some of that if I get 5k-10k views. Many don’t though (as Mrs. Peak Motorcycles keeps pointing out 🤣🤣🤣) This channel is, and continues to be an expensive hobby 😁

New idea. Cruise control
@PeakMotorcycles
@PeakMotorcycles 3 жыл бұрын
On a CRF? Do you think it has enough power to make the most of it? I tend to cruise at 60mph in 6th, though opening the throttle at that speed doesn’t do a great deal. I have cruise control on my GS and only really use that for keeping a constant speed between average speed cameras. Do you think you’d use one on a CRF?
@user-pr8vw8nl8i
@user-pr8vw8nl8i 3 жыл бұрын
@@PeakMotorcycles Yes, I bought a Vista Cruise kit on eBay. It cost me 26 us $. He stood on my crf250l rally. Now I have installed it on my new crf 300 l rally. I use cruise control quite often, even in the city. But I also use crf for big travel. And on a long journey, the throttle lock is a great device! I think I'm not the only one who uses crf as a motorcycle for big trips.))))

Honda must have gorillas assembling these bikes. Every nut and bolt is torqued way to tight. I could barely get some off, especially the fork pinch bolts. They are supposed to be 25 ft lbs. must have been at least 40
