We have used the kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

⚠️Generator safety tips: This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety when using portable generators. All generator safety rules need to be followed carefully to avoid hazards. 1) Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate the portable generator. Just because some manuals don’t say that doesn’t mean it’s safe. That is important against the generator safety rules. We also need to be keeping an eye on our children too. You need to make sure that your children are not playing near the portable generator especially when it’s running so they won’t get electrocuted. Generators pose electrical risks and they can be hot during an operation. Please keep your children away from the portable generator at all times. It is important to keep our children safe especially our little ones. Be aware of all the hazards. 2) Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide detector if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3) 🔥generators cause fire hazards too. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. You need to let your generator cool off before refueling it and before storing your generator. Never overload your generator too. Never ever back feed your generator. You should never plug your generator into a wall outlet. Also never store propane tanks indoors. Please keep flammable things away from the generator as well and please don’t smoke cigarettes near the generator. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the generator safety rules. 4) generator operation; make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2LNhWZ3g6qBrKs and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. Hope this helps

He's fairly knowledgeable and did a great job. Only as a suggestion: While on the grid map and record the wattage requirements of each home run (breaker) and rate them in priority of need. Mark said breakers or panel with reflective paint & number them, Green [1], Yellow [2] and Red [3]; green "PRIORITY "for low watts, yellow for medium watts and Red for high watts. Green for refrigerators, lighting, furnaces etc., Yellow for luxury (A/C, water heater, microwave ovens, toaster etc.) and Red for those specific loads that will require turning off those "YELLOW" [2] loads when in use. Doing this will remove a lot of guess work later and those pesky trips to the generator in bad weather. Also, might suggest starting your 'TIMER' App on your phone to keep up with your fuel levels 😉.

Great job. I’ve been an electrician for 30 years and have never used or seen anyone use a torque screwdriver on a breaker. But I have run into a lot of loose connections. I think regardless over time and heating and cooling they would still get loose. I make it a habit to check all connections when I’m doing a job for someone. Keep up the good work.

I’m not electrician, so take this for what it is worth. If you use a torque wrench or screwdriver one time so you get an idea of what the proper torque feels like, you probably wouldn’t need to use one again. However, in large commercial systems it may be a good idea.

Please don’t forget about the generator safety rules: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. This is only a reminder. Generators can be dangerous if not used carefully. Every year, hundreds of people die or get injured when using portable generators due to carbon monoxide poisoning and electrocution. Make sure you are using your generator carefully and keeping others safe as well. There is something very serious that everyone should always be aware of when using generators. Some people do run their generator indoors which is not safe and that increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning which can cause death of family and you. Some people run their generator in wet conditions which can electrocute them. Please remember that you should never run your generator indoors. Remember that carbon monoxide is an odorless and colorless gas that you cannot see or smell. Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. Keep that in mind. Make sure your generator is 15-20 feet away from your house and away from doors, windows, and vents. Never use your generator in your porch too. Having a carbon monoxide detector is very important against generator safety. Some people also allow children to go near the portable generator which could pose risks. We need to keep an eye on our children making sure that they are not near the portable generator so they won’t get electrocuted or burned by the generator which is dangerous. A locking enclosure also keeps kids safe. A generator shed might look like a tempting place to explore, or take cover during a game of hide and seek, but a generator is a dangerous piece of equipment that can cause injury. It says on the manual that we should also keep children away at all times from the portable generator to avoid injuries. Please do not allow a child or unqualified people to operate the portable generator. It is important to keep your children safe especially little ones. The portable generator can be hot during an operation. Just because some manuals missed what should be listed doesn’t mean it’s safe to do. Always follow the generator safety rules when using portable generators. Generators pose electrical risks. If you need to use your generator during wet weather, you need a generator tent to protect your generator from getting wet. Don’t let your generator get wet. Keep your generator dry and before using your generator, please make sure your hands and your generator is dry. Do not wear loose clothing when operating the generator. Everything that is said on the generator’s operating manual should not be ignored. Never smoke cigarettes near the generator. Please keep flammable things away from the generator. Never overload your generator too. Your generator can catch fire. Never ever try to plug a generator cord into a wall outlet to avoid back feeding. Back feeding your generator is dangerous. Always turn on your generator first before plugging in appliances and shut off the appliances before turning your generator off. Use a heavy duty cord for your generator and the cord should not be worn out. All the instructions should be followed carefully. Never refuel your generator while it’s running. It can cause fire if fuel spills while your generator is hot. You should turn off your generator and let it cool off before refueling it. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important. This is only a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Make sure your generator is properly grounded. Having a fire extinguisher next to the generator is also important against the safety rules. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2LNhWZ3g6qBrKs and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators and also about our family’s safety. It’s important to keep our little children safe as well. Make sure your little children are kept away from the generator at all times especially when it’s running. Hope this helps. Always remember that it’s better to be safe than sorry.

⚠️Generator safety instructions: This is just a reminder for everyone’s safety when using portable generators. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator.

This is the ONLY video that shows the SAFEST way to properly install a generator to your house. Extremely well done Take the time BEFORE you need a generator to power your home. Your safety, your families safety & the guys working on the power lines safety is very important. I agree with another comment - mark your circuit breakers, so you will know which ones are the most important to operate & which ones to leave OFF. I also recommend that people do a full system test at least once a year & run your generator monthly, so it will run, when you really need it.

Thank you for proving the 4 wire cable from the generator to your 1st panel actually grounds the generator. Other emergency generator videos I have watched do not mention grounding the generator. In my case, I used a dedicated generator panel that includes only the circuits to be powered by the generator. Using a similar switching arrangement I can easily disconnect it from the grid and I don’t have to worry about overloading the generator because I’ve already sized the panel for my generator’s capacity.

Ben: Check to make sure your generator DOES NOT HAVE a bonded neutral configuration. DuroMax literature may call your generator a floating neutral, but it, in fact, may be “isolated” from the frame vs. truly floating. A simple continuity check between the generator receptacles’ neutrals and grounds will confirm the answer. If it shows to be bonded, you’d probably want to remove the jumper in the generator to unbond the neutral and ground, otherwise your ground circuit between the generator and the panel will be energized as a “parallel neutral” due to it being bonded with the neutral at the panel and the generator.

Lots of conflicting information “out there” about proper grounding of generators. I spoke with Rob at DuroMax and their suggestion is to ground the generator with a rod attached to the grounding nut on the generator panel. However, if you do this and you’ve got a ground wire going from the generator receptacle to the main panel ground bus, it would need to be removed/disconnected. I think I prefer to ground the generator to the main panel ground bus, and in that case will remove the jumper between the neutral and ground under the generator cover. Simple enough to do. I know DuroMax would probably say not to do this because if the generator were to be used in the field that jumper would need to be reinstalled...which leaves room for user error!

@johncarini4206 10 ай бұрын
My Duromax has a floating neutral, which is fine for a transfer switch that only switches the hot wire. No ground wire because you want any fault to trip the breaker in the generator.

Ben, Thanks for another great video. I did something quite similar to this a couple of years ago. I also have a Square D QO panel with a similar interlock. My generator is a bit larger - 9KW continuous output. My generator had the neutral and ground bonded internally by default so I unbonded them for this application. I made up a short (1 ft) extension cord for the 240V 4 pin outlet that re-establishes this bonding if I want to use the generator for something else. Regarding loading the generator, you also need to make sure your 120V loads are reasonably balanced. You can’t go past half the continuous power rating on either of the 120V legs. I monitor loading individually on each of my incoming hot wires. Just one comment on your installation - In your outdoor panel, I would suggest you make a drip loop at the bottom just before the grey jacketed 10/3 wire enters the conduit and heads for your power inlet box. That way, if any water (however unlikely) manages to make its way into the panel box it cannot inadvertently be directed into the power inlet box where it could cause unwanted corrosion.

One more thing... I also installed a PowerBack Alert device from Reliance. This device makes a very loud noise when the mains power returns. This works great for my setup (panel inside). I am thinking no so good for your setup with your utility feed so far from your house. Perhaps you can use some of those CAT-5 or Cat-6 wires that seem to visible in your video but not connected. This could help you to get a power returned alarm to sound indoors. BTW, big advantage of your setup is that it gets the generator noise far away from your house.

Hey bud - I wanted to note something that I learned from the actual packaging of a generator I was considering this past week. It turns out that Generator Output on Dual/Multiple fuel option generators will be DIFFERENT for each fuel type. I don't have the numbers but it would go like this. 7Kw generator on gasoline, 5Kw on propane, and then about 4200 on natural gas. I was shocked and because I also wanted to run on propane, it made me then re-consider the size of the generator as insufficient to run the breakers I want to leave on. Someone may have already pointed that out - as you have 1200+ comments. Great work - thanks for this video!

⚠️ Here are the reminders about generator safety. We always need to make sure we follow all the generator safety rules whenever we use portable generators: Everyone must see this 1) KEEPING OTHERS SAFE: Please do not allow an unqualified person or your children to operate and service the portable generator. 2) WHERE TO RUN YOUR GENERATOR: Some people use their portable generators indoors which increases the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. It’s important to have a carbon monoxide if you have a gas generator. Never ever use your generator indoors even if your doors and windows are open and even in the garage is not safe to use a portable generator. Not even at your porch and your deck. It is never safe to use your generator indoors and in enclosed areas of your home. Your generator needs to be 15-20 feet away from your house. 3)🔥FIRE HAZARDS: Never refuel your generator while it’s running. 4) GENERATOR OPERATION: make sure your hands are dry before touching the generator. Never use your generator in wet conditions. Don’t let your generator get wet. You need a generator tent if you need to use your generator during wet weather. Please don’t wear loose clothes when operating the generator. Turn on your generator before plugging in appliances. Use the right cord for your generator. Please do not use worn out cords. kzbin.info/www/bejne/f2LNhWZ3g6qBrKs and here is a video more about keeping others safe when using generators Hope this helps

@@The_Happy_Aviation_Enthusiast I agree with you! You never know what can happen, when you operating a generator you need to keep your kid's away from ouperaiting a generator. It always safe to say that carbon monoxide. can be very dagorious for our little ones, keeping them inside your house is way too dangerous. You must keep them at least 10-20 feet away from your house, at all times. Carbon monoxide can cause one of your family members too breath in the fumes while it's running inside your house. could cause a lot of your little ones a lot of problems, so you must keep gennortors, stored outside your of. house. Thanks for the video. Too many people who do DIY type videos have the attitude that a breaker panel is sacred, and no one shall ever touch it. For a lot of folks that makes sense, as you noted, those two hot lugs at the top will kill you in an instant. But a lot of us use table saws and other tools safely all day long, and have the ability to understand what "do not touch" means. For those folks, having actual, useable information is a huge help. You give enough warnings that I think anyone who's not comfortable doing this would see that they should get someone else to do it. I've subscribed and I regularly share your work. No pretentious attitude, no high production intro's, just "Hi, I'm going to teach you something" and off we go. I love that.

You've probably figured this out a long time ago, but just in case, your generator (and all dual fuel generators that I've seen) produces less power on propane than gasoline. In terms of power it's diesel > gasoline > propane > natural gas. According to the manual for that model it should produce 3,500 running watts on gasoline and 2,975 on propane. Surge is 4,400 and 3,740 respectively. Anyway good helpful video on installing the interlock. Hoping to do the same thing myself soon.

Good reminder about the production differences between fuels. But, it would seem, the overload breaker is what tripped. Unless it's some fancy fuel-sensing or frequency-sensing breaker, it seems like it would trip just as early even if he was running on gasoline. In other words, I doubt it would product a full 3.5kW on gasoline because the breaker would trip first.

I wish I had hooked mine up this way. I got an external load center that is wired in series with the existing breakers but has its own meters and generator input. The problem is that the 5-6 circuits I can run on the generator can never change, and it was more expensive than a 30A breaker and a metal plate! Runs well pump, gas furnace, refrigerator, gas water heater, master bath, and TV outlets.

The nice thing about the system you have is that it is harder to overload the generator since there is less connected to it. For people like yourself however I agree that the versatility of the breaker interlock backfeed system can be better.

Here are the Generator safety tips: Always make sure you follow all the generator safety rules whenever you use your portable generator. This is a reminder for everyone’s safety of using generators. Also remember that warnings should not be ignored too.

Question: The start of the video mentioned hooking up a Reversed Breaker. Is there any difference in tripping rating when a breaker is being fed power in reverse? (i.e. power flowing in from the terminals to the mains instead of out)
@dexterandrewgary
@dexterandrewgary 3 жыл бұрын
Unless it's a special GFCI breaker, which it isn't, there is no difference. AC is alternating current so the breaker won't even know the difference. You know how there are some electronics that you can plug into the outlet in either direction? Same thing.

1st time seeing your video. I’m a licensed Electrician and thinks you did a great job! Only suggestion is when you are tieing in wires for receptacle…to terminate receptacle 1st just to lower risk factor even tho breaker was off, it is still man made. Great Great job, looking forward to seeing you again. Thanks

Your generator isn't actually 3850 watts unless it's in 120v mode. In 120/240 mode, it's actually two 1925 watt generators (around 1725 watts on LPG). Most likely explanation is you overloaded your generator because you pulled more than 1725 watts on one leg. When running a 120/240 generator, it's important to try to keep the loads balanced between legs. A product like the Victron Autotransformer will automatically take care of this for you up to 3600 watts.

You should plug into the generator before plugging the cord into the panel. If for ANY reason the neutral has become hot to earth (it's happened) the neutral prong on the cord becomes an electrocution point before it gets plugged in. Otherwise, very good demo!
@Zeknix
@Zeknix 4 жыл бұрын
That sounds like an issue with the neutral not being bonded to ground properly. On a funny note, how else you going to find out there's something wrong with your neutral? :P Can't tell you how many times I found problems that way.

When I upgraded my old 100 amp panel to a 200 amp panel, I used the inch pound torque wrench to properly tighten every screw in the panel. When I had it inspected, the inspector went in and re-tightened every screw way tighter than the recommended torque spec. Go figure.....
@Zeknix
@Zeknix 4 жыл бұрын
I have never seen any electrician use a torque screwdriver. Me personally I will go back and re tighten every screw that was clamping a copper wire. The copper tends to "relax" in the clamp after awhile so I just go back before I cover everything back up and hit every screw. I also re tighten other breakers in a panel that I never even touched cause you never know if the guy before you did a good job. For example, a hot wire in a circuit breaker, that I didn't even mess with, was loose. Because I just barely touched the wire, the wire was no longer connected and lights didn't work in another part of the boat. I blamed the last guy cause I had spent considerable amount of time going through all his circuits he installed and redoing a lot his connections (in the case of the grounds, actually making those connections). But honestly since I knew his work was crap, I should have been checking every single connection regardless of what they looked like.
