My Dad taught me the "loosen 'til it clicks" tip about 50 years ago now.... It has saved me many, many dollars in repairs and ruined equipment, and I have taught dozens of young men and women the same tip. We take for granted what we were taught and learned via "school of hard knocks", and successful experiences... Thank you Jeff for helping us teach the next generations!

As an ex home improvement/construction guy and currently an appliance repair guy (a few trades for being not even 22) thank you for what you do, I’ve been fortunate enough to learn these things through trial and error but also my few years of experience. Many homeowners can use this video and many others of yours to save a few bucks from calling a guy like me to come out and have everything ready to go in 5 minutes, the company I work for as do I, always give out and show customers tips and tricks (as long as it’s homeowner, no experience needed) to help save a little money from us coming out. Keep doing what you’re doing, when I started out in construction I came across your videos and it helped be better understand the trade. Now doing what I do appliance videos pop up all the time and I could just about teach the class, seeing someone give good, professional advice is always good! Keep making the videos, they helped me and knowing what I know now, these videos will help the average home owner!

Make sure you level them or they will be noisy and where faster. Also, the accordion vent hose is a major cause of house fires. Use a solid smooth vent to keep lint from building up. Also, that crimped end with be a lint collector!

Great video, after years of trade work you learn a few tips and tricks. If you don't own a pair of crimpers you can use needle nose pliers to create pleats/crimps on the ductwork by gently gripping and slightly twisting the pliers ever 1/4 inch or so around the duct

I've heard that the new recommendation is to avoid flexible ducts and instead use rigid galvanized steel because the coils in the flexible duct collects lint and inhibits air flow. Also, I learned to never insert a screw as it will collect lint also.

One tip I saw was to slightly crimp outward, a "notch", in the hard duct as a kinda "catch" . The adjustable hose clamp as it will slip over the notch but not back down....

@SomeDumUsrName Sure, and as a DIYer, I've learned a treasure trove of information from Jeff's video's, which is a lot more than I've learned from you. I've also learned that there are some who just come with nothing to contribute other than criticize a man who's helping to empower others figure out how to do things for themselves. Beside, codes vary from state to state and I happened to look up code M1502.4. In some places, as long as the screw does not protrude inside the ductwork more that 1/8", it is code compliant. Even if it's not code compliant, that screw end would have to be one hell of a lint sucking magnet before it would pose any sort of danger. Anyhow, for those of you who are so frightened of a screw, just add a zip tie and move on.

@@okymek This happened with my dryer vent. I'm not sure if that vent was ever cleaned. I bought the house just over 2 years ago, installed new washer/dryer. The first year or so it ran well enough. A few months into year two we noticed it taking longer for clothes to come out dry. Then we started getting these errors on the dryer that came on progressively sooner. Realized it was associated with the lint trap or dryer vent. Lint trap is cleared after every use. So, spent the $20 or so dollars on a snaking dryer vent brush. Took nearly 2 hours to clean that sh*t up. I couldn't believe the dryer actually attempted to run and hadn't burned out. It was seriously clogged for what nearly seemed the entire length of the vent (vented through the wall in the center of the house at an angle at the precipice of the roof). Wife thought I was crazy but after the first couple handfuls of old nasty lint in the vent, she realized we were in it for the long haul until it was completely clear after two full runs. Now it dries like a d@mn champion. I made sure to put about 4 to 6 inches of vent hose around the piping to ensure there was a solid 2 inches passed the worm gear after tightening to prevent accidental slippage.

@@valentinek.t3327 You can get plastic pans that go under your washer. You can run that to your drain then you don't have to worry about damaging your wood. Level it with plywood but remember to keep a slight slope towards the drain. You can use vinyl flooring so you don't have to worry about water damage since it is a high humidity room.

Would it be bad to add an air gap between the washing machine hose and the drain? The thread grabbing thing is a neat tip. I had the 8ft accordion type dryer vent but a possum got into the house & the dogs chased it behind the washing machine. The poor thing ripped the vent to pieces. The back of my dryer faces an interior wall but the exterior wall is just to the right. It's extremely cramped though so we are renovating, tearing down small walls (non-loadbearing) and swapping the laundry room with a useless tiny bathroom. Anyway, washing machine and dryer will be turned with their backs to the exterior wall to make it easier to vent the dryer (and have more space in front of the machines). We will be using a Magvent for the dryer vent. You clamp one end to the dryer and the other end attaches magnetically to a corresponding piece on the wall.

We moved our washer and dryer in our basement and were doing this by our own which is helpful but we're stock and pending job bcoz of the vent that we need to dig a hole and connect it to our main floor vent hole in the wall.

How do you clean the dryer duct if the unit is in the basement and it goes up into the first floor? Our dryer duct is ground floor going directly outside.. It is easy for me to clean it every three months.. Thanks!!!

I have a house almost done being built. Utility sink in garage stub outs with 2 inch drain line. I will be moving my washer and dryer to the garage next to the sink. What is the best way to connect the drain home from the washer?

Question: The duct for the dryer, does that have to be a distance from the wall or does that not heat up enough to cause an issue to the lining behind the wall, or in my case drywall? Thank you

It's better to leave a bit of room if you can. Will do anything to the wall? No, but i is alway good to give it a little room to make sure you don't squish any part of the hose. The 90 degrees angles are the weak link in a hose.

Sir, you are a master. I have a question 😊 can I install the dryer vent tube straight out, (like behind the dryer) or has to be done the way you show it in the video?

Great tip, never knew about the bkwds click trick. Jeff's videos are a great, great source of DIY info, but I am a little surprised with this one. Too many fire hazards. Google 'how to install dryer ducting' and you will be instructed to go: 1. always smooth wall ducts when possible/practical, ie, metal pipe ducting, NEVER accordion. 2. junction points should always go 'male to female' ( crimped into uncrimped ). The dryer will always have a male/crimped end coming out, and be joined by going into a female/uncrimped end. You should try to continue this crimped into uncrimped sequence in your entire duct run. In the video, Jeff changes the overhead female/uncrimped end into a male/crimped in order for the accordion female to fit easier. But this is not optimal. You just introduced an air-flow restriction point, which both reduces dryer efficiency and makes motor work harder. And creates a 'lint trap' fire hazard. 3. never use screws ( and even rivets are discouraged ) which penetrate the ducting. Screws are lint catchers. Its been said already down below, but accordion style ducts are lint-catching fire hazards.

Great video - one question though - does it matter if you put the exhaust duct for the dryer lower or higher? and is there any cons to it?
