My mother was a master entertainer. Huge white tablecloth buffets at her house. She would have over 100 people in. She was taught to warm the plates in the oven. The dinnerware has to be oven safe. I can tell you that preheating the plates in the oven definitely keeps your food warm longer. She did it for our dinners every night. If you enjoy your warm food warm, this is a perfect hack!

About the guest bath hand towels, it might be a little extra, but my stepmom knitted a bunch of small “washcloths” and put them in a small cute basket. That way when you use the toilet, each guest have a fresh clean “towel” to dry their hands with. She had a small hamper next to the sink for the dirty ones😊

We use the fancy paper napkins in the bathroom when guests come over and I keep a pump hand sanitizer on the counter where the food is set up. If it is out, people will use it. I also pick out the serving dishes & tools, wash them, and put them where they will go on the serving area. I put sticky notes on them for what is going on/in it. That helps me and others who are helping me set up know what goes where. I have noticed that my daughters and grandchildren now also do them same! My house is always clean, so I only clean the sinks & toilets and do a light wipe down of everything else because I just have to clean the house after! I'm not sure if I can ever match your level of hosting!

Finally! I’ve been waiting for you to do a video like this! I think that you are an expert hostess, and I’ve been hoping that you start a hosting series, because I do think it is a lost art these days, but like you said it is a way to show love. But anytime someone wants to host, it is a little nerve-racking, so it’s nice to have all these tips and watch you do it, so we can copy 😁

Great ideas! I wish you would`va talked about the cost of everything... for most people it gets quite expensive to host frequently. So like maybe how to share the costs, let people bring food/drinks, make sure you're not always the one hosting... because I think money is a topic where it can get uncomfortable for some people.

I don't host often but here are some tips I learned from the few times I did. 1. Have decaf coffee/tea options. I've learned to always have a little on hand. It's a great thing to offer if it's later at night and they don't want to drink caffeine that late in the day. 2. If you're hosting a big backyard style event we've used a baby sized blow up pool & filled it with ice to keep colder dishes in. (Potato Salad, Pasta Salad, Condoments) This way things stay cold and not weird and warm. 3. We keep some coloring books/crayons, a few kids books & cheap toys we got a yardsales/thrift stores in a tote in the garage. We don't have kids, so it's nice to have something for them to do if people come over with their little ones. 4. Similar to if you have food allergies, ask if people are allergic to pets. As someone who is allergic to dogs, it's always nice to know ahead of time so I can take my allergy meds. We have cats and always to try to let people know. 5. I haven't done this - but my mom always had a pack n play. We had a lot of babies in our family. It alway made the mom's feel welcome and that they didn't have to leave come nap time.

Great job! I think you covered everything! I realized that I enjoy more intimate gatherings now. I have a really hard time figuring out who can eat what so I may let them know what I am having and ask if they would like to bring something special. I think it’s ok to suggest a dress code or theme as optional especially depending on how much notice as some may not own pink or pajamas ha ha!

I love this! Hosting is so good for my soul. Such a personalized tip that I actually noted from a friend was to put on a music playlist that is of your friend’s favorite artist! This works best when inviting say a couple over. For example, this couple loves Elton John, so have Elton John radios/playlists playing throughout their visit. It makes it feel so personal!

My mom always hosted, never fancy more like backyard bbq or Sunday family dinner vibes. She always started with, you’re welcome to anything I have but you’re probably going to have to ask for it or open the fridge yourself. I wish I thought to offer things but I am very much a chip off the old block with that one. 😅 I provide enough food for three weeks but forget to offer you a drink. I know it’s ridiculous, I’m also apparently not changing it. Lol.

If you’re not a great cook or if it’s too overwhelming. Do a charcuterie or cheese board. If you have a nice wooden board, fancy it up with grapes, some (dark) chocolates. It can look so amazing!!! Maybe not the cheapest, but easy and quick to do 👍

My friend from church (who also has the gift of hospitality) has a BRILLIANT collection of multicolored washcloths that she rolls up and puts several on a small metal shelving unit. There is a metal floor basket next to it to put the towel you used after washing your hands. I’m assuming she washes them all after the night is over. If anyone is interested in that, I’d recommend that you put one or two “used” towels in the basket next to it so people who have never seen that know what it’s for. As someone who doesn’t really like to use the same towel as others, it’s one of my favorite hosting things I’ve seen to date.

@micheljanse when you heat up the plates in the oven you do it at a low temp like 100* or on the “warm” that isn’t any hotter than a dishwasher temperature. So if it’s dishwasher safe then it should be able to go in the oven on warm for about 15 min

I love this, Michel! My husband and I just moved into a bigger apartment and we're also loving our hosting era. 🥰 I have two tips to add: 1. I leave little jars of period products, makeup wipes, and anything else I think guests might need on the guest bathroom counter. Eventually I want to add a sign that says "Take what you need." 2. If you're serving wine, open it and/or put it in a decanter just before your guests arrive. The wine tastes better when it has some time to breathe and no one has to feel awkward about being the first to pour themselves a glass.

When my friend hosted a large group, she had only a decorative guest towel on the rack. So I dried my hands on my jeans. Afterwards she complained about people using her expensive towel. I said nothing but after that, I got a pretty paper towel holder for my bathroom cabinet. I always have fresh hand towels (not decorative ones)and paper towels out. Guests have thanked me for not forcing them to use a damp towel.

I love how you talk about hosting as a spiritual gift…. I have been hosting for a couple years…. Even though my house was very small. We were blessed to add on a huge addition and I just felt God tell me he blessed us with it to use it for Him…. A few weeks ago my Sunday school teacher asked what our spiritual gifts were. I felt so silly but I said I think mine is hosting people. Everyone in the class was like that is definitely it! A few days later you made a video talking about ur friends in Hawaii and them using their home to host people…. It’s been such a confirmation to me to hear about them and also yourself! And so cool to hear about other people with the same gift!

Very practical tips! I also like to have a “departure” gift bag for each guest. Select small gift bags to continue your party theme and fill with a couple of home baked cookies and a mini size water. I sometimes include a special bonbon (like Lindt truffles) around the holidays. You could also add a couple of breath mints or gum.

Great, & informative, video. I definitely had more of a gift bin when my kid was younger and little parties & get-togethers happened. S’mores skewers when on clearance, glow sticks/glow anything, books, beach towels, journals, markers, etc.). Now that my kid is grown I have things like cozy socks, candles, face masks, reusable/packable straws, reusable bags, nice pens, seasonal blankets, etc. I also have a greeting card accordion file for birthdays, sympathy, pregnancy, engagement, just because, graduations, etc. It’s handy & maybe a bit old-school since many people just text these days.

I have social anxiety and it’s very hard and exhausting to go out. I prefer hosting get togethers at my home. I have belonged to a special needs mom’s group for about 15 years and we would try to get together once a month at different restaurants. For the last 8 years, we choose different homes to meet and maybe for the last 5 of those I host at my home. It makes me happy to have them come and we can just kick back, relax and BE. It is usually a lot luck but I always have a basic theme. 😁❤🎉🥂

Disposable, yet cute, hand towels… to me so important. Then no worries to go check the hand towel and also for anyone worrying about germs….so much better. A scented plug in is also great in the guest bath. I too, love to host, so just things I thought off. I agree about not telling people a color at all! I really don’t like when people do that! More and more people do that for weddings and I am over it. Fresh greens are great, as I love them, but not everyone does. One of my best friend couples, the husband would never eat anything on the greens.

Another tip that is such a game changer - run the dishwasher and empty BEFORE guests arrive. Often times you're cooking, or prepping apps/dinner in the afternoon and then the dishwasher is full, making after dinner clean up with guests annoying. Makes it so fast to do a quick clean up and not have to spend loads of time hand washing things.
