On console at least, you can hotkey ammo, then when you equip a gun, just use the hotkey'd ammo and still use the weapon normally. Example: use fatman while consuming 5mm rounds for unlimited ammo!

I believe it takes the damage from the 5mm ammo though. I know you can also use fatman ammo in an automatic weapon and itll still explode like the fatman.
