For those of us who have lots of pets that eat crickets, and find it more convenient and cost effective to just breed our own feeders, this is a fantastic idea, and a wonderful video. Thank you.

thank you!!!! this works awesome. I was skeptical but I already had the same bin and extra PC components laying around. No smell to the point I keep under the living room tank!

THANK YOU for this video! I watched it and setup a nearly identical box. My intake for air is PVC and a PC fan like yours. I used a 90' elbow directly into the box. On the outtake side, i used PVC as well, directly into the box. However, it is going directly into an air purifier. Like yours, I have no odors! As you've pointed out, ventilation is key, as well as feeding/water source, and picking out any die off. I would also add, the dish you offer a water resource, should be VERY shallow. I made the mistake of using one with 1" depth, and they will smother each other to stay next to water. Use a lid of some form that has very little lip to it.

Thank you for your video. My guess is that your ventilation is overkill. To save some electricity you could try running the fans on the 5 volt rail instead of the 12 volt rails. Using the 5 volt rail will create less noise and about 1/6th of the energy your using now while still providing plenty of ventilation, and your fans will run practically forever. Another idea is that you could put just one fan on the 5v rail and vent outside your home without any filter resistance, thus reducing your power consumption to 1/12th of what your using now. By the way, how long is your filter lasting?

@massivecommshot Yes I am. Although they could be kind of expensive, within a 3 month period you will have easily multiplied your colony by 3 or 4. Buy a rubbermaid bin, cheap heat mat, lots of egg cartons, and water gel then your set. Feed them ground up dog food and oranges (increases birth rate and numbers). It is very easy when you have everything set up. And they don't die left and right like crix. Hope this helped.

Excellent video! Thank you! Do you know if it is better to keep crickets in a clear container or dark container?
@peckerwoodcustoms12 жыл бұрын
For the pc fans you just need to find a ac to dc adapter that all sorts of devices use, just look on the transformer part "what plugs into the wall" and make sure it says 12v dc. most are high enough amp to pull 2 pc fans, just cut the device plug end off and wire em up

@evvdcaec Wet paper towels will work just fine as long as you remember to keep them sprayed and moist. The problem with paper towel is that it is a perfectly suited breeding ground for bacteria and needs to be changed quite often (change them whenever they're dirty). I recommend water crystals because they are very low maintenance (throw more in when you don't see many) and it's easy to buy water crystals with calcium and gut load already added.

@BeardedNewfies what/where do your cricket lay their eggs? love the ventaliation idea, i just dont use a lid on a tall container but I get a mild smell.

Very well done! explaination without bable. I would have liked a bit more detail on the filter (being the key to the success) I understand how it works, & how to mount it but it's actual composition is unfamiliar to me.

im sure youve made a new one by now but just thinking you could put a 90 degree angle on the filter so it stands vertical and the end cap sits on the ground relieving the stress on the box, also ditch the pc power supply and use a standard 12v 1 amp cell phone charger to power those pc fans, it works great, and wont be such a fire hazard.

This is brilliant but I don't think I have the electronic know how to put that together. Where does the air go? I'm not clear on that. Does it just circulate around inside the bin or is there some out-take tube somewhere that blows it outside your house?
@microiguana11 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the initial purchase may be more expensive, though you can still find 100 mixed with a couple breeding pairs for $25 shipped. But everything after that is not only cheaper, but better for your animals. Nutritional value should always outweigh cost, especially in this reasonable price range.

I keep them in 106 qt plastic bin no lid use at any time. Occassionally ill shake the egg carton material so the poop stuck in there falls to the bottom. Tried using cereal substrate, coco coir substrate, and oatmeal substrate. Coco coir has the least smell, risk of contamination, but I cant "suggest" where the cricket lay their eggs like I can with oatmeal/cereal substrates. Soil/coco coir mix is a a plastic container is great for cricket egg placement. Where do your crickets lay their eggs?!

Cool idea and video... But I have been breeding crickets for years... Mine have no noticeable smell. I keep a thin layer of vermiculite about 1/2 an inch deep on the floor of my bins. Never had any problem with smell at all.... I'm kinda wondering how on earth people get their crickets to smell? I hear a lot of people say crickets stink really bad and I'm like... What? Really? How? I don't keep a lid on my bins as it is not needed as long as the sides are smooth and 6 inches or more above the highest point the crickets have access to in the bin. I have thousands and thousands of crickets. I could keep them in my living room as they don't smell in the slightest.
@steveboutcher803 жыл бұрын
Maybe it is the species??? I breed the Jamaican Cricket (Gryllus assimilis) and Black Field Crickets (Teleogryllus oceanicus). No smell here.

Looks pretty easy really, I could probably throw that together in an hour for less than $50 in parts. I have one bearded dragon and just keeping a week's supply of crickets for him stinks pretty bad, if I had a few full grown beardies and wanted hundreds of crickets at a time I'd do this.
