I have a special place in my deer hunting heart for hunting big woods public land whitetails! Since 1993 I have hunted the rolling hills of PA public land for 19 seasons, OH public land big woods for 7 years and the northern hardwoods and wilderness forest of the UP of MI for nearly 3 decades! What I have found is that deer hunting in a remote big woods setting is not for the weak of heart. This is a tough hunt where long drags, packing venison out on your back and over an hour walk to your stand or blind location is the norm. Here is how my latest big woods public land hunt together in PA, and how the entire strategy came together for a huge level of bug buck success!

I've found the guys that walk way back in the woods tend to be good guys. They are willing to bust their butt to get a deer and get it out. Most hunters that turn out to be grouches are the guys that walk in 10 minutes overlooking a giant open valley and get upset when people come by.

I am glad to hear that you walk to a location and sit but I always feel like its a waste of time to sit but this is exactly what I did with people in Afghanistan and it works. Nice to know that I can truly apply what I learned in the military and apply it to hunting. I walk to an area where there is a lot of consistent tracks with fresh crap and pee on the trails and just sit and wait for a couple hours. Also nice to hear that when you move to a new location you do it slowly. This video gave me the confidence to know that I am doing it right!

I just started hunting last season. I'm 35 years old, I live in pa and I wish I would've started much sooner. After that first day I was hooked. I didn't get anything the first day but saw a lot of deer that had no idea I was there. That was a really cool feeling. I've been watching a lot of your videos on public land hunting because I really want to take on that challenge. My first season was on my bosses private land that he has been managing for about five years now. It's an excellent place to hunt. I even got a nice six point 145 lbs dressed my first season! I just want to say that you do an excellent job putting your videos together. Very engaging.

Lifelong Adams County, PA resident and native here. I haven't killed my first deer yet, but my grandpa took his deer from the Michaux State Forest near the Appalachian Trail where the Blue Ridge woods meets the apple country. Kinda typical PA, really. Anyway, thanks so much for the video. We have a tendency to have a lot of division among PA hunters .... more than most states, I think. Some folks think "there ain't no deer in them woods" while others think we have some of the best deer hunting we've ever had. Glad to say your experience was more towards the latter and I'm happy to be able to learn about my own state's public land hunting from someone from a different state - cool perspective! P.S. I'm a religious man and I honestly pray for Sunday hunting year round like all of our freaking neighbors for crying out loud.

I love to talk with the other hunters, they tend to teach me as we talk. The big woods are only 3+ hours away from and to get way back into them is only about 40 minutes in. We do not hunt gun season, because there is a lot of lead flying, I did it once, satisfying and dangerous. Bow hunt 2 weeks before gun season is pretty tame. Thanks for taking us along.

NE PA Hunter here. Love the video Jeff thanks. 2 things are a must for me to be successful on PA public land. Hunt an area with very little to no human intrusion, and that has thick cover. My encounters with big bucks skyrocketed since trying that. Like to heavily hunt bedding areas too. If I spook a bedding area out and ruin it so be it. I have another 30+ beddings to hunt the rest of the season

Great story on hunting the eastern lands. Out here in Kansas it is a different kind of hunting especially on public (Walk In Hunting Areas) hunting. Most WIHA’s are so trampled from city slickers that you are damn lucky if you even see deer sign. Most of the private land is either leased or there is no hunting. A lot of out-of-staters do not even ask permission and have given hunters here a bad name. But, there are exceptions! In the last 10 years, at least, I have not harvested a buck under 200 lbs and in the last 3 years I have not harvested a buck under 300 lbs. this years harvest was a 9x11, 20 pointer by eastern standards. I have a quarter section of hunting ground...160 acres for those who do not know how big a quarter section is, with only about 25 acres of wooded area on a river and 85 acres of CRP and 40 acres of tillable crop land the rest is an old farmstead. All of it is river flood plain, no hills or topographical areas associated with hills. But, it is excellent hunting due to management of what there is for deer habitat. Great video Jeff!

Congratulations Jeff, nice Pa buck. I belong to a camp in Center Co., part of Bald Eagle State Forest. I believe it is about 44k acres. Lots of timber and those high ridges. Big woods!Love hunting there! Thanks for the video and advice. I've learned a lot from you and THP. 58 and still learning, Thanks!, Greg

That’s the way I move one trees at a time slowly. I’ve got a doe tag to and could’ve filled it yesterday morning but she was to small. I let her walk.

Cool vid Jeff. Been hunting north central Pennsylvania the past 30+ years. Compared to Midwest states our deer are much less accepting of ANY human intrusion. We have anywhere from 700,000 and a million hunters. These deer get wise or get dead! Lol

Jeff, First off wanted to say I love your videos. I appreciate the guidance and helpful tips you have to offer. I know you hunt all over so hopefully you can help with this one. So I have been stationed in FT Stewart, GA for the past 7 Years and plan on making this my home after retirement in a few years. I lease 2 Parcels from the timber CO one just over 580acres the other 190 acres, and have access to hunt 1 smaller parcel being 50 acres(only 22 is hunt-able). Started leasing the two big properties in 2013 and have had good bucks on camera every year. I have been doing basic food plots for the past few years and feed corn from about July-Aug until the close of our deer season in Jan. My biggest problem is keeping the big mature bucks on the property or at least in camera range through out the season. I'm looking for the right mix in food plots to hold or encourage the deer to stay and just cant get the right answer. Living in coastal Georgia makes it a bit difficult in growing certain crops but i know there has got to be one that will work. Ive always wanted to do brassica plots but with out the cold winter weather and freezing temps you want the turnips in the plots usually spoil and rot instead of being eaten. If you have any tips or need any areal shots, or make up of the property in order to provide suggestions please let me know. I thank you for providing a great channel with the honest advise that some folks sometimes don't want to hear.

I feel the same way about the mountain bucks of West Virginia. They’re not the big boys we have here in Ohio, but it’s pretty sweet to drop one in such large chunks of timber, especially with a bow...

Point of order. What Jeff meant to say was the procedure he used was he tagged the deer immediately after killing AND before moving. :-) Killed my biggest PA archery buck this year. 8 pt about the size of this one. Not sure I followed your advice exactly, but your videos are certainly motivating and got me out. Killed him the second to last day. He was searching for does. Oh and this was on public land, State Park land at 10:20AM and I was 80 yards off a main road.

Nice hunt Jeff, I use to live out in Guys Mills PA and hunted similar places. I had a 65 acre farm with hemlocks in the back and plenty of room to hunt, never killed any really big deer but the dairy farmer down the road who lived their his whole live always put a nice 140-150" down every year for rifle.

Here is western va it's all rugged steep bigwoods with low deer numbers and I usually dont see over 20 deer from archery till end of late muzzleloader but usually get a real nice buck or two every season with little to no competition from other hunters

Such a great late season public land gun hunting story. My Dad is a spider 🕷 too and can sit and wait for a long time. I need to find a great deal on a meat 🍖 hauling pack for just the same reason you mentioned. Even though I am 38, there are some deep and steep places in West Virginia to haul out a deer 🦌 from.
