My nephew wont let long range hunters on his ranch in New Mexico and most of the local guides wont work for them. Too many crippled deer and elk left to die. One guy missed a deer at 700yards by a few feet second shot was in the gut. Guide had to make him follow up. 10 am till 4pm to track it and put it down.

Love MDT products. Have a custom built PRS rifle in the XRS chassis with a ckye pod, and used it to take a 5x4 mule deer here in BC last month. The shot was a hair over 500 yards, dropped him instantly with a perfect low shoulder heart shot. The main takeaway is practice, if you can hit a 1.5 moa target at 1000 yards with consistency then you should be confident to hunt at half that distance. If you cant make those shots then DONT TRY. It's better to risk busting the animal by getting closer then it is injuring it because of a bad shot.

@matthewtracy8744 I dropped a doe across a cornfield at 346 yds last year. Can you say that's unethical? What is or isn't ethical is all personal opinion. If you don't have the confidence to shoot further then don't.
@matthewtracy8744 Жыл бұрын
@huntermoss506 you can't predict an animals movement at trigger pull. They longer the shot, the more room for poor shot placement. So yes, I would say if you had the opportunity to close the gap, then you took an unethical shot.
@05Dmax_LLY Жыл бұрын
@matthewtracy8744 again, it's all personal opinion. My opinion is an ethical shot is one you can take with extreme confidence where the animal won't suffer. I had that confidence and proved it. You only have confidence to 100 yds and that's okay! Everyone is different, some shoot more often than others. I also compete in precision rifle comps well past 500 yds so 3-400 yds is still a reasonable hunting distance for me. You can't apply your ethical opinions to everyone else.

As a guy who shoots 20” targets at a mile plus, all the negative comments are funny. If you can use the fundamentals of marksmanship properly, can use a laser rangefinder and can read the wind. 600 yds is quite easy, if you know what you’re doing. No disrespect to my fellow shooters/hunters, some people are willing to put in the time and effort to learn and practice the skills of long range precision shooting and some people aren’t and it’s totally cool if you don’t.😊

Ringing steel at a mile and putting down game instantly at a mile is very different. If you cant get closer than 600m youre not a hunter, you shouldnt be hunting. A real hunter doesnt care how far or difficult the shot is the only thing a hunter cares about is putting down game as fast and painful-less as possible.
@josephhomen Жыл бұрын
@@jordanlongstreet3057bahaha no one said anything about putting game down at a mile. I’m talking about not everyone is willing to put in the time and effort to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to hit small targets at mid range (600yds) and that is ok and not necessary in a lot of the world. But In a lot of places like in large parts of the western US is not possible to stalk to within 500yds do to terrain and type of animal. I have killed many of animals at distances further than 600yds and they all were quick kills. There are lots of cartridges capable of delivering over a well over 1500 ftlbs at 1000yds let alone 600yds. I do agree that a guaranteed quick kill is a necessity for hunting no matter the range.
@claytonbruner1808 Жыл бұрын
Accuracy at medium to long range is paramount. What's even more important is reading the body language on the animal beyond that .70 time of flight range. Critters move. I shot an Nyala recently in South Africa at 711yds. TOF was.97 seconds and as I shot he took a step forward . Luckily he didn't know we were there and it was a short feeding step. But that's a variable that can become an issue at distance.

Nah, most of the deer we shoot are between 100-200m. Even our elk (wapiti) are usually shot pretty close in. There are a few guys that take longer shots, but thats far from the norm. A lot of comments here from people that shoot 4 rounds per year the week before rifle season... Get out and shoot. If you can't go shoot, dry fire. Long range hunting is a bit of math, a bit of knowledge, and a bit of luck. The better you are at the first 2, the less you have to rely on the 3rd.

What would you consider acceptable accuracy for taking shots on game 500-800 (assuming ethical condition)? I shoot a 90's era browning a-bolt 7 rem mag that averages 1.5 MOA from a bench. Not sure if its me or the gun, but I would love to be at MOA or below. Trying to decide if I need to ditch the gun for something more accurate, or try to fix what I have.
@MDTTAC8 ай бұрын
I would say 1 MOA or less would be the goal to get to.
@mr.nobody684 ай бұрын
The capability of the gun is irrelevant. There are no benches in the field. What is YOUR capability when you've got a standing shot and buck fever? We can all get a nice sled on a sturdy bench and shoot pretty little groups at a gazillion and three miles. That doesn't mean dick. If you take the exact same rifle/ammo and shoot a 12 inch group at 100 yards from the standing position with zero support and not even a sling, then you are limited to a max distance of about 50 yards. If the same conditions yield 4 inch groups at 100 yards, you can realistically expect a hard limit at 200. Assuming an animal with a 12-inch kill zone and being smart enough to leave yourself a margin of error.
@elkhuntr28164 ай бұрын
@@mr.nobody68 "The capability of the gun is irrelevant." What I am getting at is, the gun has a tolerance range, and you as a shooter has a tolerance range. Do these 2 add together or do they overlap? For example, if your capability as a shooter in field conditions is 3 MOA and your rifle shoots 1 MOA, now the total is 4 MOA. If you shoot a 2 MOA rifle, now your total capability as a package is 5 MOA. In that scenario the capability rifle matters.

How American hunters casually take shots at this distance baffles us. Just stalk closer. In the UK we frequently get into animals 50-150 meters. I shoot 150 deer a year for my job and my place shoots 800 a year. None are shot at over 400 meters.
@gamelord1000 Жыл бұрын
It really depends on where you are at. In the mountain areas, it is common to see deer/elk on the other side of the mountain 500-800 yards away. It would take 1-2 hours to hike down the mountain and then back up the other side. By then, your target is long gone. Anyone that attempts a shot like that better know what they are doing for sure.
