It's a vapor trail, caused by the rapid separation and re colition of air and moisture molecules as the projectile passes through the atmosphere. Bullet construction has allot to do with it too. My Sierra match kings (a fatter and shorter bullet) trail quite a bit at range. But my burger vld hunter ( very low drag, long and sleek) , a boat trail hollow point, do not.

@@rogeeproductions2509 Truly amazing. I had just been watching a Vortex presentation where they talk about a lot of things, including different cartridges. One of the guys on the Podcast is always on about his Browning A Bolt .300 WSM (he also pronounces it wizzem.) He has used it to hunt black bear in the northern part of North America. So, before seeing the video you linked to me, I was just watching and that casing popped out and I thought, well, that looks familiar. My caliber of choice is the .308 Win ( I always note that because I once accidentally bought some .308 Marlin Express and that will not fit a regular .308 W action.) Like others, I am envious of the chance to hunt long range. And I think there is value in long range hunting. The animals are less pressured. And I think, if you can make the shot, then fine and there situations like this where the next hill top at 600 or 70 meters might be the closest you get without spooking the prey. And the terrain forces that, too. In North America, big game like elk, moose, and even some mule deer are in hilly and mountainous regions and it might 800 meters, something short of a kilometer. Gunwerks had a vid of one of the gus' son making a 1,300 yard shot with their 7 mm Rem Mag. I live in northeast Texas where it is very overgrown and forested, especially on the public land where I hunt, average shot is 50 yards (45 meters.) In the Panhandle, near Amarillo is the Cap Rock Canyon WMA (Wildlife Management Area) and their drawn hunts are for mule deer. The literature for the hunt says to expect snow and ice and arduous hiking conditions (high desert in winter time.) And shots at least 200 yards (high desert, not a lot of trees to hide behind.) Anyway, thanks for sharing with us the hunts, the technology, and the philoophy. I usually used Ballistic Buddy, which was free. Now, I use Strelok Pro, which costed a few dollars but is well worth it and can true the reticle, too.
