The varmint rifle .22 Cal is better for small animals it's equivalent to a modern day AR 15 .22 Cal. Only use the bow when you have small game arrows for hunting squirrels and small birds like Blue Jays. I commonly use the varmint rifle on jack rabbits, badgers, raccoons, turkeys, etc and always get perfect pelts when hitting critical parts.

Just use the bow for hunting you get perfect pelts all the time. Regular arrows for medium size game, improved arrows for large size game. And varmint arrows for small game and all birds. No need to guess what rifle to use. And if you use the according arrows you can take down a buffalo with one arrow to the head using improved arrow however they are hard to recover because they go straight through. Its is possible but you will need to look around for it. And only two improved arrows for legendary animals is needed

I was thinking you should be able to carry 2 large animals on your horse. 1 on the horses rump and then 1 on the saddle.. but you would have to go on foot and have your horse follow. So it's a give and take.. I often end up hauling a hide by hand when I find a second 3 star animal I want to keep.. would be nice to sacrifice my saddle and be able to run full speed and have my hands free while on the way to the butcher or Gus to sell the game.

Additional tip on Legendary animals: It's 10 times easier if u use ur repeater (Lancaster for higher rpm) and put multiple targets on its head while on dead eye. It's faster, easier, and less chasing

If you use your lasso for animals from deer sized up to at least elk you'll get perfect pelts every time. Just lasso the animal...as you repeatedly press square (or the Xbox equivalent) and get closer a kill prompt will pop up. Kill the animal and skin. Automatically a perfect pelt

I use the varmint rifle on small game and either the Springfield or rolling rock rifle on everything else. And I only do headshots. I only used the bow and arrow when I take pelts from farm animals at night. I got perfect sheep, goat, and cow pelts from the emerald ranch fence's farm. Now I gotta figure out how to steal a pig from butchers creek. Plenty of perfect pelts there.

When you study the animal with the binoculars or sight from the gun in the information bar it will tell you which weapons to use for best quality if you're not sure whether to use an improved arrow or a rifle etc.

After playing through for my third time. I have found there are 4 different categories of animals: delicates, small game, medium, and large. There is also predatorial and non predatorial too. for most medium non predatorial animals, you will not change the quality nor the pelt if you lasso and stick. Alternatively for medium and large animals both predatorial and non predatorial, a headshot with the Springfield Rifle will do the trick. For small game, the varmint rifle will do the trick, and for delicates, small game arrows. For deer, arrows will be another easy method.

I've noticed that using a bow all the time on little critters was way harder than if I studied them and then I could just pop them anywhere with the varmint rifle. I blew that gun off for the longest time until I couldn't get 3 star pelt from badgers, then I noticed it said varmint rifle. That gun is so much better than wasting time with the bow exclusively. So use what compendium says.

The first weapons you should by in the game for hunting is the Springfield rifle and Varmint Rifle. Springfield is universally useful for all deer, boar, and wolves (Repeaters do NOT count as 'rifles'). Varmint is cheap with a huge mag and can easily bag several birds in rapid succession, not to mention drive-by rabbits and turkeys. Nobody needs a perfect duck or canary. The cowboy repeater should be fine for foxes and coyotes.

I thought fishing was impossible until I realized that you could send out an extremely short cast (like 5-10 ft in front of you) and the legendary fish (or any large fish) would still bite. Once it's on the hook, you just need to spin the right trigger a couple times before it starts fighting and the fish is basically on the bank at that point. If it doesn't work immediately, start with a longer cast (at about 15-20 ft, hook the legendary fish. Let the line break, and then work your way to 10-15 ft, then 5-10 feet since the desired fish will be closer to you. Don't waste your time trying to cast 50 ft out.

I watched another video explaining all this stuff. This guy went on and on made it more convoluted than it needed to be. And in all of that he didn’t explain to look for the stars when looking at an animal’s info. He mentioned to look at their info to see what type of gun to use but said nothing of the stars. 1 way to make obtaining perfect pelts easier is to kill the Legendary Buck. Sell his antlers and pelt to the trapper then buy the crafted buck antler trinket from the fence. Then your pelts from perfect animals should nearly always be perfect.

Getting a 3 Star Kill with Crocodiles or Gators is the most easiest Task in RDR2. You have every time in the World to walk up to them and then just aim between the Eyes. Don't even need to go into Deadeye Mode.
