I never knew what I did (in the 70s) actually had a name, until I started watching Acoustic Life! I thought I was kind of cheating - I could never get used to thumb/finger picks, so I used my flat pick (I preferred a relatively thin jazz style, nylon pick), middle and ring fingers for almost everything. My oldest son picked up from watching me play (he's a much better player than me). After coming back to guitar after >20 years, I find arthritis inhibits a lot of the flexibility in my fingers - but just working 10 (usually a little more) a day has resulted in improvement! Thanks for this episode, I learned a whole lot that will be fun to practice! I'm not sure you can ever get enough practice and demonstration of quality cross-picking!

i just played for 10 minutes following this guy's channel and learned more than i did in the past 20 years of pretending to play a guitar.

Hybrid picking exercise was great. Keep developing this over time. Never knew how it was done, properly. Thanks.

Different things work for different people. After struggling with trying to learn hybrid picking for months, this simple, little lesson was like magic. I'll need to keep at it, of course, but after just an hour of doing the exercise, my fingers started to "wake up" and it felt natural. It's such an easy exercise, and perhaps it's the simplicity of it that makes it so effective. Those descending lines actually sound musical, too, so that's an added incentive to practice because it sounds like nice. Thanks for the lesson.

Whew! What an episode. I so liked the hybrid picking lesson - especially the first exercise, picking and lifting the middle and ring finger alternating. The Martin is gorgeous, but seafoam green is a friend of mine, and that guitar is not seafoam green. Still, great color. The story of Fallon’s axe, well, as you said, it’s what’s cool about the guitar community. I feel like I owe you one!

Great segment on hybrid picking, the "forward" exercise sounded suspiciously like the "Water Song" by Hot Tuna... It's a great tune, Jorma is awesome!

This is how I taught myself to play Travis picking patterns because I didn’t want to put the pick down and use my thumb. I didn’t even realize I was venturing in chicken picking. Heard of it but didn’t know what the term meant.

I love these shows were you give us a new technique to learn. I liked the Claw Hammer episode and I love this one. I'm not sure what techniques to recommend for future shows but anything that is used in bluegrass is welcome. I'm geeking out about practicing the Hybrid (chicken) pick steps you have given in this episode. I do like the Seafoam Green guitar. It will probably oxidize into an amazing finish. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the chicken picking technique segment, Tony. Brad Paisley uses this technique for his incredible speed and accuracy. Breaking it down for us was very helpful. Especially when you insisted that we take it slow and focus on muscle memory. I think I'd like to learn harmonics next. There are some beautiful tones that come out of basic and hybrid harmonics. Oh, and awesome riffs to practice with.

Dang, I'm an intensive gardener and don't have internet access most of the time or I'd be taking your online class and make time! So bummer, not sure how I'll pull this off as I love music and certainly want to expand my guitar skills and have fun! Thanks so much for sharing this!!! You're an enthusiastic and very clear teacher!

Now I want some chicken for dinner! I'll take the sea foam green guitar for 20 years and let you know how it turns out! I actually overdosed on your videos today. So many hair changes! I swear that was Cooper Greenberg interviewing Chris Martin. So,a GS Mini or that GT little thing? Just something to keep handy that my old arms and fingers can play easily?

Hey Tony- great show as usual. I'm a new(ish) TAC family member and while I don't get to your site as often as I should, I really like your shows on Tuesdays. The Chicken picking segment was great! I don't see myself being a finger style guy any time soon, but I've always admired people who are. That technique is a great hybrid. As for the green Martin well.. next. By the way, I intend to read Dave Grohl's book, but if you want to check out a REALLY inspirational book- check out Jeff Tweedy's new book entitled "How to Write One Song". Exactly the inspiration I need to start exploring this world of creativity. Keep up the good work! MNPeter

Tony, regarding your on-line course. I own an electric Fender and am a rank beginner. Some folks say I should use an acoustic guitar for your course. Thoughts on this?

Hey Tony! I have a question. When you select a guitar to play for a new Acoustic Tuesday show, or a TAC lesson or recording (or for any reason really), what do you consider? Do you select a guitar for it's tone? Is it a better fingerpicking guitar? Scale length? Perhaps there isn't a reason, you just grab what's available or close by?

So im learning a technique, which is quite similar to this one. No pick, but the thumb and the indexfinger are together as if a pick is attached. Sometimes you play up to 4 notes simultaneously (thumb - index - 1; middle ring pinky - 2,3,4). This is still manageable for the downstrokes, but when you hit an upstroke with thumb n index and you have to hit an additional sting my brain just explodes. does somebody have a good advice on how to manage that?

For me, setting out to play for 10 minutes always leads to an hour or more. I liken it to the under promise, over deliver saying.
