My great grandmother was an amazing hybridizer and I have one of her hybrids, so this information is so vital to me carrying on her legacy. She won a merit for her "Owyhee Desert" Iris.

You're SO LUCKY to have some of her hybrids! It sounds like you're in the same area as I am. My Gma, born in 1906, was a hybridizer and has 5 listed in the Iris Society online and she had many blue ribbon iris. She used to sit us down and show slides of her iris. As kids we SO weren't interested. 😆 And unfortunately, the Iris Society listing doesn't have photos so I'm hoping the listing will tell the two irises that were used and make my own. She named one Boise Rose. Maybe my Gma and your great Gma knew each other?

Perfect demonstration. I always make sure the stimatic lip is moist. If it isn't, I apply a little spit. Early morning is best time.

So how would you cross iris varieties that bloom at different times? I have some iris that finish blooming before the other even starts… Can you pull the pollen anther off of the earlier flower and save it until the later blooming variety’s flower opens? Will it still be viable? Does it need to be refrigerated?
