Thanks again for the video! A quick tip for everyone: after a couple of months of experimenting with dwarf roses, I found that grinding the pollen sacks of the father plant between your fingers helps release the pollen easier. My issue was I couldn't get the pollen out of the sacks.

The best video on hybridizing roses, thank you!!! Clear, easy to follow, highly informative, and very well done. I actually got seed from a Powerhouse x Frances Meilland cross using this video ! I didn't plant them , just wanted to see if I could do it. I encourage anyone interested to give it a try! I also ordered the book mentioned. Fascinating.

@@botanicaltreasures2408; what is the proper time to harvest the rose seeds? Is there a need for me to wait till the color of the flower turn to brown color?
@botanicaltreasures2408
@botanicaltreasures2408 3 жыл бұрын
@@diannellyfetalvero4893 Rose seeds are in rose hips a fruit that forms underneath the flower. Rose hips generally turn red when they are ripe often in the late summer or fall. Some hybrid roses have infertile seeds. Generally it is more reliable to use cuttings to get rose plants since those started from seed might not be like the parent.

Wow, fantastic to see this, and all respect to people who dedicate in making flowers better and more beautiful for us. It is such a privilege to be able to pick any colours, scent rose etc from nurseries, absolutely stunning. I am a big rose fan, I have 9 varieties of roses, all planted by myself, (3 more on wait list!, and I curiously live in "Rosedale Cottages" ), one of my roses is almost perfect, in colour, shape/size, scent, disease resistance and foliage, non thorny, but I would like it to be a climber. Is it possible to make climbers through cross pollination, without loosing all its existing perfect qualities? I was intrigued and amazed to see after its first flush of flowers that colour of lattice changed from a perfect (non orange, non pink) apricot blush into milky coffee colour. It is not bicolour rose(which I adore btw!), but it significantly changed colour in its later stage of bloom, and lattice stayed for a long time before falling off. It is just a perfect rose in evey sense. Just on its self. Has dark foliage which beautifully contrasts its bright colour range. It is a hybrid rose, so unlike my David Austin roses, it doesn't have a perfect chalice shape or velvety soft texture of the lattice itself. But, if it is a climber, and if I could use it as cut flower, I would propagate it all around my garden, it is a perfect flower. I just wonder can we turn it into a climber and a cut rose variety through cross pollination?

I am struggling to find and recognise pollen, and also how to treat it which this video was wonderfully helpful with. The only one of my roses where I can actually see any pollen is the magenta single petalled Rosa rugosa. My other roses must be producing pollen because they set good hips, but I just can't see it, and maybe I am not collecting it properly, so I will watch this video over again to see exactly what he does.

In your example plants you mentioned bring in the male for its disease resistance which is great but in regards to color is it up to chance or will that orange from the male dominate? Would it be a combo of the female/male colors or would the mother win out? Is there a way to stack the odds one way or another for the resulting hybrid color?

@@digemsmacks5690 Thank you. Depending on where you live there are several hybridizer associations you can join. Dues aren't much and they are the ones you can better answer your questions.

Thanks for the video! Is it possible that some roses do not produce pollen? I've followed the exact steps from the video with two dwarf roses and I feel like there's no pollen coming out of the sacks.

I don't do a lot of rose breeding so I'm probably not the one to ask. But I have heard some roses are hard to get pollen from.

I have a Zone question I live in zone 5 I would like to get a climber or a couple of climbers but they are zone 6 if I protect them during the winter keep them out of the Wind and cover them with straw, would you recommend this or not
@Paulzimmermanroses

I would recommend that. A lot of people protect climbers that way.

Different roses have different numbers of chromosomes. For rose 2n=14 and the base number of chromosomes (X) is 7. So for diploid rose 2n=2X=14. For the series though, the tetraploid rose species are 2n=4X=28 chromosomes, the pentaploid roses are 2n=5X=35 chromosomes and the hexaploid rose is 2n=6X=42 chromosomes. Is it possible to cross between these groups or are there certain roles. Diploid x tetraploid OK? Diploid x pentaploid not OK? Perhaps you could send me a link to an extended article on how to choose the father and the mother.

Paul Zimmerman Roses Thanks, I will read. Perhaps I’ll try a few crosses. I realize it’s like a lottery, and getting something really nice is unlikely, but it could be fun to try! 🌹 👍

@@joseanecruz3914 I never really tried crossing, but I tried taking seeds from roses I have( self pollinated) . Even as I follow instructions how to prepare the seeds I didn’t get any seedlings.
