Need to find out what type of plastic a specific product or part is made from? In this injection molding video, you’ll discover how to identify a type of plastic with:
1. the sink-or-float test
2. a compression test, or
3. by burning it

Would have been better if you actually demonstrated the tests rather than skip half of the tests while explaining them. Most people probably won't know for sure what you mean by "oil like substance" VS "grease like effect". If you could actually show these tests being done in full, it would be much more useful.

Thank you. Have you thought if doing a quiz-type video, where you show how a bit of plastic behaves in these tests and we could guess what it is?

I want help to identify plastic types in things like assortments of unlabeled plastic shopping bags and various product bags; plastic types in kids car seats and other things for kids; bottle tops, seals, and the rings; used up gift cards and expired credit cards and alike; cell phone cases; and plastics metal scrappers separate. I also want to know what's not being recycled and why. Or are we switching from petroleum plastics to something more safer and non-toxic?

Without these three test perform. I can identify any type of plastics. By hands or eyes visually and chewing by teeth. I have diploma engineering in plastic technology from Aligarh Muslim university UP India.

I just thought of an idea. Since most plastics these days are identified by letters or a logo for recycling, you can conduct your own experiments by burning them and identify the color and smells from them. You can then try the same with an unknown plastic to see if it matches the same characteristics.

Can you make the same video, but about bioplastics and how to identify them? Edit: To be more precise: Of course the process for identifying chemically identical plastics made from non-fossil raw materials is the same as for thier fossil based counterparts. I was thinking of degradable plastics and those non-degradable plastics that can be made conveniently and efficiently from the types of fresh biomass that is widely available.

After years of failure testing many varieties of glues, I heard about plastic welding, which I use over bonding agents whenever possible. Using soldering irons for melting plastics, even with adjustable temperature control, proved difficult and largely unsuccessful. I find that my heat guns work very well but required making custom tips to limit and deliver the hot air precisely. (Beware of overheating the inside of the gun when restricting the air flow). In my uneducated brief experience with this, I believe it essential to use the same kind of plastic as the part to be repaired when welding. (note: my Smoothy wax melting/shaping hot air butane torch has proven to be too hot to be of use unless a long tubular tip is made to allow cooling before application of air on plastics.) My respect and gratitude to Orange Plastics.

Having used the procedures several times to identify plastics, I have to say there are big problems. Excepting the float test, they are destructive! What if you're trying to identify a plastic to repair an irreplaceable device?

Hello! Can I ask which sensor should I use if I want to detect different types of plastic (PET, PVC etc)? They have different wavelengths but I'm not sure which sensor to use for detecting them separately. Also, from where can I get it? Or how to make one?

HDPE would be a good bet as it is light, strong yet flexible and can be found in most milk cartons and drink lids, it can be identified easily by its recycling symbol with the number 2

What the h#$2 is "oil like substance" or "candlelike grease effect". Is PE and PP so expensive you couldn't find any to demo? That's all I came here for: Distinguish HDPE vs PP. Still not sure what I have.

@@reddragongaming8501 Who said anything about that word? And why would you think they did? There are multiple 4 letter words starting with "h" I can think of. Now back to the topic -- what is "candlelight grease effect" or "oil like substance". Found another video with some actual samples of HDPE and PP. I had PP, which welds similarly at similar temp to HDPE apparently, smells waxy when heated, but requires PP not PE to weld. Quite a learning experience.
