A great idea for sure, maybe make a cutter that will cut off all the beads at the same time. Then put the beads into a rock tumbler to remove the excess plastic nubs. That may work. Great content as usual.

A couple of thoughts that washed through my head while watching this.. For small parts like beads or any other injection mold. 1. Build a vise to put the mold in instead of having to screw/unscrew the nuts and bolts to hold it together. The vise will make it quick release. 2. A guillotine to cut the beads off in one go instead of one by one. 3. This may work... Just tumble the beads as they are which should knock off or smooth out the threads/squeeze out from the edges of the beads or pop some polishing stones in which are mildly abrasive to achieve the same effect but quicker. Hope that helps 🤘

Wait on a second. I don't know if how you have the bolts on open edges of your molds is a standard practice in the industry but the botany world needs to know about this because it would save so much time if plant presses used this design instead!! Only just found your channel but I am already thoroughly in love with it! Thank you for doing what you do!

Great that you are cleaning up the plastic. I might suggest a mod to the molds where you use a metal T shaped wingnut fastener to hold the halves together. That would save massive time. Also think about being to use a paper cutter to shear the beads from the sprew. I used the T shaped wingnut fasteners on my lead molds with good success. I got that idea from US military surplus electronic equipment. I suspect that Dzus fasteners would work quite well also to hold the mold halves together.

Thanks for the suggestion! We have tried wing nuts but the forces we are working with are pretty massive and without enough clamping pressure we end up dealing with a lot of flashing. We’re gonna try quick release clamps.

Why not make a shape press to push out and cut the beads (since you milled a shape). In fact, just order something like a die cut every time you make a mould. Also, look at bead spinners, if you haven't. Could make for quick making... or at least less time. Keep up the fun videos!

I am looking forward to these smaller beads being available on your shop (I see from other comments that they're coming soon), as I'll definitely be picking up a few other things once they're available as well. I'd also like to gently suggest that you add the approximate size of the HOLES of the beads to the item descriptions on your site. Didn't see that on the bigger beads, and it's hard to get a sense of scale from the pictures alone. This is useful information for crafters like me, so that I know what size elastic/wire/yarn will fit, as well as the size of needles I can use to thread them on. Hello from Canada!! Love your shop, great stuff and gorgeous colors. Did you thought to make tiles? Could be a great alternative for backsplash or even a parquet style floor in a sunroom. Sure be love if some of my countryman be having your creative sense. Also I watched the one that you made fabric with plastic bags, and you were asking for ideas...about reusable grocery bags. I made some of it when plastic bags was still used here (we are back to paper bags which should never got away to began with lol); I was hand cutting all my strips and then crochet them. Caused myself a serious case of CTS but made gorgeous items that are washable and sure sturdier that some of the one they sell at the store.

I think a more efficient way to remove the overflow would be to stick a bit of sandpaper to your table and sand it off all the beads at once.

You could make a press mood that would cut the beads from the main stems after they have cooled to drastically cut down your work load. Use the angles from the snips that were used to cut them by hand. Think “leather hole punch” and paper hole punch but on a mechanical press. You can make that too using the design you already have to raise and lower the injection arm.

This, in theory sounds like a great solution. The one thing that ruins that plan is shrinkage. The plastic shrinks by between 1-3.5% after cooling and this fluctuation would impact the location for pressing the cutters.

I would love to have the brothers make show up and help me to make use of all of the plastics and paper that I have stored in the garage. I have stored them to ensure that they get recycled. I would want to watch them turn my scraps into usable items; because, I have learned not to trust the usual recycling companies. Maybe they might be willing to set up a partnership with me, to bring their company to NE Kansas.

Just wondering about those nurdles in the sand ... if you mix them in water and leave them to stand won’t they just remain on the surface of the water to skim off? I guess you would get other contaminants but presumably they have a precise weight and shape that might be suitable for extracting by sieve??

A press with a cutting die could save you a lot of effort to avoid having to cut off the sprue by hand etc. Then putting the beads on a spindle to turn off flashing lathe style

If you get a hole punch to fit close to the side of the O.D. Of the beads one like you hold a chisel they have an exit port on the side so you can hold it over each bead and hit it with a mallet and as you go they with eject our the side as you cut them off the tree then you don’t need to clean the up because your cutting them close to it’s size and you can obviously get a hole punch for every size bead and this would make it go heaps faster

Every time I go for a bicycle ride I always come back with some trash. Finding at least one HDPE plastic cup is a must and I ride my bike until I find one. I have more motivation to ride a bike now ;) then these cups are put in special charity collection baskets which are in front of some big supermarkets, churches etc.

If you're wanting a specific(ish) color but don't have enough, if you mix a packet of _iDye Poly_ by *Jacquard* in a bottle and add a tad while you're baking the HDPE, it'll work. I used an empty 32oz bottle but the size doesn't matter much. This is for use on the clearish/white plastic such as milk jugs. -Clean the bottle out -Stuff the dye packet and "color intensifier" packet into it -Pour hot water in it. I use tap water that's as hot as comes out. No boiling. -Fill the bottle with just enough water to be able to mix the dye. I use about an inch from the bottle. -Add just enough to your HDPE to coat it all as even/dark as you can -Bake til melted enough to start mashing it altogether -Repeat melting it and folding it til you're happy with the consistency -Fill your mold, bake it, and BAM! It's not as good as just having enough of the color, but it works!

Beautiful. Have you ever looked at the bead making methods of old glassmakers? What I have seen and read has it that the streamer of glass is wound onto a long, prepared, metal rod. The rod is removed and the tube is snipped into bead lengths. The beads are 'tumbled' (like candy and rocks, etc.) to round and smooth the rough edges. I haven't seen modern glass bead making but I imagine that the snipping is mechanized now. In their method, there is almost no waste and it looks like less of a pain in the neck than all that sprew clipping. (Let me now apologize for being a meddlesome butinski. I think way too much.)

get a tumbler for larger bead orders, it will mostlikely deburr and polish though idk the impact strength of your beads.

Seems like a more efficient way to trim that overflow off of beads would be to drop them onto a threaded rod. Lock them in place with a nut at each end, put the rod in the lathe or just a drill, and spin it to sand off the excess.

Brilliant. Remake one side of your mold so you can pour and replace one side with a new side that has cutting faces. Screw it together and unscrew, save you cutting each bead by hand? Nice work!

Sounds great in theory, but the beads shrink a tiny amount which would throw the cutter off a little, so each bead would have to be visually checked for damage, which kinda defeats the point of speeding it up! Thanks for the suggestion though!

I bet you could put the beads into a big tumbler still attached to the connectors. The tumbler with some steel beads and or abrasive should break the beads off as well as take off the nubs left. I would get a cheap rock tumbler and experiment with the idea

This kind of waste is incredibly common in America, and there is incredibly difficult to recycle at scale. question about the "nerdles", those plastic pellets: Surely they can't be PRE-production plastic waste, as you say. If they are pieces of existing waste from plastic products wethered by the ocean they should be POST-production plastic, no? Love to hear what makes them so hard to work with and how they can be reused.

They aren’t broken down pieces, they are virgin pellets on their way to a manufacturer for turning into products. Unfortunately, spills are very common during shipping and they end up on the beaches
