If i got continuity means that the wire is touching something; if the wire is shorted im not supposed to have continuity? Im confused

Would be nice if it was done when installed the issue alot of people are having is when it's hooked up not laying on table 🙄 how would you suggest a person does it when thermostat is 20 feet away from furnace ?

Same way. There's just going to be some running between the furnace and the thermostat as you change which wires are connected. Alternatively, you could bring the thermostat to the furnace.

@@zbfelt Perhaps you could use your multimeter to test between ground and the voltages of each wire while on/of through each cycle and see if they match with guidelines posted by the AC company. For instance, make sure the voltage shown while running are what they are supposed to be while on/off. It's 24V at the max.

What is an alternative measurement I can do if I don’t have a continuity meter? I just have a multimeter. Thanks

Your multimeter should have a continuity setting. If it doesn't, then you can use the ohm setting on the lowest range. If the ohms comes to something less than 10 or so, it's continuous.

You should have no continuity between any two wires at the thermostat correct
