Thanks for the info. I just got a 2/53, and it passed all the checks! Thanks!

One other thing to check is the fact that the nut that holds the frame to the top of the collar is solid as compared to later ones where they we’re stamped steel. BTW. The reason that the base rest has to be steel is that you can’t “Paint” aluminum you have to anodize colors onto aluminum as they will just peel and flake right off.

Also....the authentic will have the yellow border decal down really low...almost touching the bottom rim. Later the same decal was placed about 5/8" up from the flared rim edge. Also, the pump cap is held on by two screws not the clip which later became ubiquitous.

Aluminum was used for the war effort so collar or frame rest if you prefer was made frommm steel. Not painted but "blued" like a firearm. Some frames are not blued but all I believe ere the "cheese grater" frame with many small holes in the bottom. Some also came with ceramic burner caps as well. The vents should also have tiny white speckles in the red porcelain.

Of note, the black on the burner frame was more like a gun bluing than a paint.

Throughout my internet search I have not seen a base protector for the fount, is this not part of the 200a or is mine just unique?

So was every 200a between those dates a black band? My first one I started with, now on number 28, is a 2 - 52. Everything matches but the marking on the side of the fount. It was in such bad shape originally and it’s been painted red about 3 times in the last 25 years that I have had it. Probably gotten the most use as well being my very first. Not interested in resale, but just nice to know. I can justify keeping my 1974 200 and my 201. Lol. So that’s about how long I’ve been doing this. Started when I was 10. 25 years ago

I don't think so. I'm pretty sure coleman still made standard 200a with an aluminum (silver color) collar.

The first thing I thought when I heard you give the age range was the Korean War. Remember, on many metal products (including cars) their composition was affected by war allocation.

Could very well be! I really am not certain.

thanks for sharing, was there a specific reason for the black band lantern? why did they add the black band to them? thank you

I'm really not sure. There isn't any document history to my knowledge as to why. However, I'd speculate it was maybe a test of corrosion resistance with painted parts vs non painted. But that's just a compete guess.

5 points for calling the tank a fount and not a font.
