I made coffee in an old train tunnel last summer. I was once accused of having a penchant for things nobody else wants. After restoring a few antique lanterns and being gifted a small 1960s stove from the local dump I figured this expedition would be the perfect way to "legitimize" acquiring and fixing up so called old junk. As I was approaching the entrance, a more regular tourist offered me money because he thought I was homeless.

I sent them an old 1940s lantern that I've had for years that needed a new check valve. It came back with ALL the corrosion on the fount cleaned off, working perfectly. My affection for coleman goes back to early childhood camp trips with my family, when the only thing seperating us from the blackness of night was a campfire and the Coleman 200A with it's gentle ,comfoting hiss as it operated. good times

That coleman lamp with the wood handle and parabolic reflector is used as a lamp for fishing. (Think flounder gigging. )They were made by a company that used the coleman parts to create that. I have one just like it.

I started out getting my mid 80's lantern & stove working and now I have 9 lanterns and 6 stoves. Most of us that love these iconic lamps, stoves & other items love them because they are part of our youth. We went on family camping trips and remember the sound & smell of a Coleman lantern lighting up our camp area & cooking breakfast on a Coleman stove. We have to share these items with our kids and grandkids..even if it is on a late night visit that doesn’t call for a lantern,,show them how it operates and let them experience what it’s all about. That’s the only way our passion will carry on with them.

I've been messing with old lanterns and stoves for many years, but never REALLY understood how they work. Thanks for this video series on the topic. Your information has been eye opening and infinitely usable. One tip I would like to add to this discussion was given to me three decades ago by my late friend Steve. He was an antiques dealer and collector of a wide variety of oddball and fascinating things. I once asked him what I should collect. His reply "buy, collect, trade and sell what you like. Not what someone tells you is collectible". Do a hobby for enjoyment, not employment. The rest will work itself out.

Bought a Quick Lite some years ago for $20 with a pump. The pump was shot (somebody had tried to crudely replace the leather) and it had no shade. Been thinking about restoring it and finding a shade. I love the idea of taking it camping and eating dinner/reading by its light. Love your shirt; I ordered one in Coleman lantern green...

This guy has created some excellent videos with information that will remain useful. Alot of the same practices of running small power equipment apply here, you can run unleaded gas with ethanol if you have to, but don't leave it it the tank when in storage! Don't pick up a lantern with unknown history and try to start it, you know, just to see if it works. At least check the fuel tank, empty it out and clean it, start it with good fresh gas. If the pump works, and you charge the system with old dirty gas, you have just made alot more work for yourself. Putting magnets in the fuel tank can help to prevent rusty metal particles from fouling up the system, even after it has been cleaned out, you might not want to leave them in there for too long. I just sent D&D a message. I have a small collection of Coleman lanterns and a few don't work. I am learning how to disassemble them and troubleshoot them by your videos. I got two to work so far!!! My favorite lantern is a 200A with a chrome fount that I found in a dumpster! my goal is to get that working and use it while working in the yard at night. Thanks Frank! I’ve recently started collecting Coleman lanterns and now have 5 that all work thanks to your easy to follow videos. In this particular video, you showed a picture of a abomination that I have a exact example of. What appears to be a cobbled lantern with the bowl type reflector WAS quite a common sight along the Gulf Coast in the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s and is referred to as a Floundering Lamp. My Google search turns up practically nothing about these lamps. Every single one I’ve seen is exactly alike so I’m thinking maybe for this area a thinking individual created a cottage industry to produce enough of these things to survive intact for so many decades. Well that certainly is possible...American ingenuity at its best. I helped a gentleman about 20 years ago with a flounder lamp he was making. He wanted to mount 6 lantern burners on a piece of ridged pipe so he could tilt the mantles down towards the water. I never saw what kind of contraption he made but it sure sounded fun.

So true! Absolutely ASK at a garage/yard sale if they have any Coleman products. I've found more Coleman stoves that way than anything else. I even found a large lot of Coleman fuel that way that had been forgotten about. About 50% of it was no good, but I paid next to nothing for it.

It happened to me in an antique store. I walked around and had a look and they had nothing to interest me. Before I left I just got talking to the shop owner and told him I was interested in old lanterns and he said “ hang on I think there is one out the back “. He came back with a lamp I bought for small money. Bingo !

Just purchased my first liquid fuel lantern, a 220k, on eBay....I think I got a fairly good deal at $45 judging by the prices of similar 220's (several different letters after the 220) but honestly haven't a clue...lol From the photos it appears to be in decent condition with little to no rust.... Great informative video. I have always had a fascination with Coleman and similar products. I hope to get to a point financially (again) where I can start collecting Coleman again, as my once very small collection is no longer (vindictive ex's suck) but that was over 12 years ago. It's taken that long to get excited about the thought, since everytime I would see a Coleman something it would just hurt my heart knowing that my (very small) collection was literally thrown in a river. Not even sold or gave away so someone else could make use of them. Anyway I'm really glad that I came across this video because now the thought of finding the vintage Coleman somewhere unexpected gets me excited. I love making something someone feels is junk or obsolete useful and enjoyed again. BTW my current obsession is rebuilding vintage catalytic hand warmers (like Jon-e) since it is nearly impossible finding replacement burners for the jon-e, also they are not nearly the investment as a Coleman (although worth it once I get a few dollars saved up) so it a good collection hobby for the broke.

The natural gas furnace in my home, built 1960, was a Coleman. Not terribly efficient but it never failed to work. It even had oiler cups on the blower motor and fan shafts. I've replaced it with a more efficient unit but did save the little chrome plated name emblem. On collecting. I've collected antique gasoline engines, vintage Pyrex, old axes, lighters, and more. Never collect with the expectation of making money, collect for the fun of it. Also, I find that the thrill of the hunt is sometimes more enjoyable than the owning.

Paul, yes, the thrill of the chase is the exciting part. When I was a boy, we had a Coleman #444D oil burning furnace in the living room. It is now on a shelf in my shop. I'm starting to collect vintage fishing items, and old oil cans. My former passion of collecting Pontiacs is just too pricey for my taste.

No idea if the lantern toward end of video with reflector is genuine. But back in 1950s South AL around the gulf and bays, we used one very similar as a crab light for night crabbing and floundering. As I remember, ours had a brass handle, but otherwise looked similar. In the 80s or so there was an outfit in Foley AL that made a propane version that I still have, unused.

I know about lanterns because I use to do alot of night bridge fishing and we lower down right above the water and sometimes use a aluminum Turkey Pan on top of lid as a shade to reflect more light out and made sure they were in good working order , So as we move along throughout the years the biggest problem was the cost of fuel that went through the roof like in todays market $12 dollars mantles are up as well kind of takes the fun out of it but these lanterns will always be a piece of history and I do still enjoy them and they hang in the basement tip top shape and do still use every once and awhile Great Video And Thank You Keep The Good Word Up Coleman Forever

Crown white gas camp fuel is 8 bucks a gallon at Walmart. Most mantles are 3 bucks for a pack of 2, and if treated correctly should last your a long time. Yes prices have gone up, but I wouldn't say to a degree significant enough that it should put you off the hobby.

I've only been in this for about a year. I can see why this gets as addictive as it is. I refuse to buy from Ebay as I don't have a huge budget to work with and decided to keep it to only buying them local, at yard sales, garage sales, and flea markets. I found a couple of super nice Sears (Avacado & blue/black big hat) just by messaging people who were selling other antiques and asking if they had any lanterns. My first couple were commons (220j & 200a) and that got me hooked into realizing how many different ones were really out there. During the winter months in PA, it was something fun to do & inker with. I met some scum bags in this hobby for sure but for the majority of people I've met, have been helpful & nice. I have found a few other common ones that I didn't need, so after talking to my neighbors, I gave them away to their kids who love them. I even show them & their parents how to work them. The few dollars I've spent to buy them & get them working properly is worth more than any money I've spent. Their faces light up just as bright as my lanterns when I'm giving them to them. lol

I started when I was going through my camping gear and saw my 5133 propane lantern. It made me think about the 335 we used to use when I was a kid. I found one in really good shape for a really good price and picked it up. This reminded me about how when our 335 started leaking at the valve my father just replaced it with a 321. So I found one of those too. This lead me to just looking around and seeing what was available and what I liked. If I see something I like but don't yet have I get it if it's in acceptable condition and at a price I am willing to pay. None of what I do is for profit and all of them get used. I do NOT believe is "trailer queens". If it isn't going to be used it is of no interest to me. I do enjoy getting rougher specimens and refurbishing them but not for resale...just my own enjoyment. I've picked up a few parts lots and put together a few and electrified them with LED's and they are now part of a few man caves out there. The guys I made them for love the idea they can use a classic Coleman gas lantern inside without any worry. They get the look the want from parts that would have otherwise been scrapped. The only lantern I have yet to get is what I refer to as my birthday lantern....a 228 and a 335 made in the month and year I was born. I've found a few that were really nice but at a price I was not willing to pay. But no rush though. I'm sure one will find its way into my life at some point.

I came into Colemans because I did NOT grow up with them (we had a 6-volt electric lantern, boring) and I wanted to know how they worked. In 2017 I found a 220F and an AGM 2572, then a handful of other 220s, then some 228s, an Aida Express Record 1500(!) and most recently a 275 Turd. I think I have around 14 or 15 now except I'm pretty sure they're mating out there. I found an unfired 425 stove that still had factory test air pressure in the tank but also a horrible dent from storage. They're a fun drug habit to have and I'm hoping to get a table lamp at some point!

Hello Frank just researching a lantern l picked up at a yard sale model 237 marine lantern wondering if you have ever seen these be called marine lantern it has original Coleman paper work with it stating it's a marine lantern just recently subscribed to your channel and got hooked on Coleman lanterns thanks top notch info

No sir. I know Coleman made a bulk adapter for the 5122 lantern, but that is all I have here. It just accepts a standard propane hose.
