Much appreciated. I could not believe how much cottonwood seeds were accumulating! My kids were having a blast. Thanks for the feedback. -Marty

One other trick identifying cottonwoods is they are one of the most difficult trees to climb-the lowest branches are often very high up.

That's a tasty trick!

They are shade-intolerant and rarely retain lower limbs under forest conditions.

I must have a male in my backyard 100 mi southeast of Las Vegas. Had to dig a trench near it that cut through about 1/3 of the roots. Lost about half the leaves but fully recovered this year. The isolated roots had many saplings pop up. We kept one but the other 20 or so had to go.

Strong species. Early successional... They grow directly out of golf course sand traps!

Thank you Marty 👍👍 I am learning trees. They say that Morel mushrooms grow under cottonwoods and the ground underneath is rich due to the trees frequent loss of top heavy branches 🌳🌳🌳

Can you make clothes from it like "normal" cotton?
@MartyCalabrese2 жыл бұрын
Ha, good question! The cotton you're thinking of is in the Mallow family of shrub-like plants. This TREE is in the Willow family. Harvest season would be hilarious for a cottonwood-running around with a net before it rains🙃

Is a tree that produces bole like small "seed" which contains "cotton". I always thought it was a cottonwood tree. What is it. It has basicly very large pale green leaves.

I'm an 85 yr old guy who has always been a tree nut. I have a dozen or so oaks now growing in 3 gal nursery pot I do this all the time and give then to those who need or want them. I'm particularly love pecan and black walnuts. I have 1 black walnut on my property which is probably the parent of smaller, younger trees on property in county around me. Since I was 5 there was a tree I thought was a cottonwood with lots of memories attached. I have livedb50 or so yrs away. And now see a tree like that I pass often. It's a med sized with large round pale green leaves.bot produces individual seeds about size if a walnut that is hard brown/black cover, that when broken has cotton like inside. It doesn't rain cotton and only saw cotton when broken into. This morning I went by tree near me. But overnight Temps have lost its leaves. It's not end of world, but a fellow tree nut will understand. Thanks! Nate

My neighboor planted a cottonwood in her yard about 2 years ago. I now have 5 saplings. How would i know if its male or female? I would keep it if its cotton less lol
@MartyCalabrese6 ай бұрын
That’s a tricky one. You know the female trees produce the white fluffy “cotton.” If that has happened, tho, you wouldn’t be asking. I’m wondering if the trees are old enough to show seed pods and catkins. Male catkins are smaller and rusty yellow. Google for a visual. I’m not sure how old the trees need to be to differentiate male from female. Having five individuals for comparison helps! -Marty

I've never seen one in NC or VA....where are they hiding? Big pollen producers they say.
