Hello Mam, Please look at this sentence: The stage at which cancer is curable is already over. Question: I can deduce that the group of words("at which cancer is curable") is modifying the noun(stage), so the group of words is playing adjectival function. However, I don't know what to call this group of words. The group starts with a preposition (at), so maybe it is a preposition phrase. But then I will have to call the sub-group("which cancer is curable") a noun clause. However, doing so doesn't make sense. Please guide me!
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
It cannot be a phrase simply because it contains a verb 'is'. What is your main clause? The stage is already over. Which stage? 'at which cancer is curable'. adjectival clause. the pronoun 'which' stands for 'stage'. It would have read as: the stage at (the stage) cancer is curable. so the prepositional phrase is simply 'at which' or 'at the stage'. It is the 'which' that complicates this.

Ma'am it's very difficult to say whether a relative clause is defining or non defining. For eg. My bag, which is blue in colour , is very expensive. How to decide whether 'which is blue in colour' is defining or not. May be the person has just one bag so no need to say anything about it or the person may has more than one bag then it will be a defining clause. It's quite subjective to decide. Please elaborate. Thanks
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
It is non-defining. The important part is that your bag is expensive. That it is blue is incidental. Even if it were red it would be expensive. But if I say, My bag which is blue is stolen. The the blue is critical because it contains information that will enable it to be found. So do not tie yourself into knots. It is a hazy area. Just check on how critical the information is to the rest of the sentence.

Ma'am I have a doubt , after classification of particular type of clause is done then while classifying it's type should we look at its subordinator ?? For Eg. = While classifying type of adverb clause should we look at it's subordinator? Also Ma'am you teach very well, I was in search of experienced and we'll versed teacher like you, Thank You.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Soham. By subordinator I think you mean the marker like when, where, because, if, although etc. right? Yes you can look at them but they are not reliable. You need to ask the question when? where? why? how? what if? although what? etc. to the verb to get the clause as your answer. For noun clause ask the verb who? or what? to get the clause as answer and for adjective clause ask which? or what kind? to the noun (not verb) This is the acid test.

Mam here in my book the sentence is '' I like these delicious chocolate cakes." So mam it is a adjective phrase. in book answer is noun phrase .How? these delicious chocolate cakes is underlined.
@TheMindspringsEnglishTeacher4 жыл бұрын
If cakes is underlined then cakes being a noun is the most important word and hence noun phrase. The answer is noun phrase. An adjectival phrase will not have a noun.
