There's a lot wrong in this video. The Shih Tzu is not even remotely "a relatively recent breed." In fact, they are among the most ancient of breeds, a cross of two other ancient breeds - the Tibetan Lhasa Apso and the Chinese Pekingese, with the former being the closest genetic relative to the ancient Chinese wolf. There is no Tibetan Spaniel (or Tibetan Terrier) in the Shih Tzu breed, and indeed, both those breeds are exceptionally rare (as is the Tibetan Mastiff). A lot of breeds from a country as small as Tibet! There is only one standard size for Shih Tzu - the Imperial is not a separate "breed" of Shih Tzu (which is only one breed; it's nonsensical to say "there are two breeds of the one breed). I think what the speaker means to say is that it comes in two distinct sizes, much as Poodles and Schnauzers do. Despite this? The Imperial Shih Tzu isn't even like that - the demure smaller Imperial isn't an official variant of the breed, nor is it recognized by, for eg. the AKC - an organization which discourages the breeding of tiny Shih Tzu, for health reasons. And I say this even though I own an adorable pair of "Imperial" Shih Tzu sisters! Any dog with hair that grows continuously can be clipped into a puppy cut - you could do this to a Lhasa Apso, a Maltese or even an enormous Old English Sheepdog, if the mood grabbed you! Good heavens - how would the the style of a dog's grooming helps you "identify whether the dog is purebred or not"? Plenty of true Shih Tzu characteristics were missing in this video - the breed standard requires them to have that adorable underbite (well, I think it's adorable), and I believe all purebred Shih Tzu sport butterfly eyelashes, though I imagine there's other breeds that have luscious lashes, as well. The hair should grow in a starburst pattern from the center of their face - a quality that earned them the moniker, "chrysanthemum dog." And finally, the tail should curl in a beautiful plume over the dog's back - walking away from you, it should sway like a fantail goldfish.

Actually, they were a mix of Lhasa Apso and PEKINGESE. Not the Tibetan spaniel. Also, their eyes can also be golden depending on their coloring. For example, liver or golden brown or “blues” can have golden eyes that vary in tone and shade. “Imperial” is not a breed of shih tzu. It’s a reference to size, and are often the result of breeding smaller pups. Lhasa Apsos are also larger and have longer snouts. They’re not quite as brachycephalic as the shih tzu.

We found our Shihtzu she was abandoned and abused so badly and was only 1 pounds at one years old. We took care of her and she is looking great now. She still has issues but she is over coming them. We got her a friend that is a shorkie and she been keeping our willow busy ❤

I fostered a three-year-old ShihTzu who had been found on the street as a stray. He had also been abused as well, resulting in his tail being dislocated and sadly had to be amputated. Till then I had no idea how painful an injury to their tail is. Though, its actually a part of their spine. I had him for three months on a medical hold so he wasn't available for adoption. But, when it came time, I couldn't bear the thought of him then having to re-trust someone else all over again. Gladly, I became what is best known as a "foster fail. I can't imagine my days without him. They are such a sweet breed. My little man makes me literally laugh out loud everyday. When things appear to be falling apart they may just be falling into place.

I have a Prapso Shih tzu as well. The word comes from ‘Perhaps an Apso. The term was coined because every once in awhile a purebred Lhasa apso coupling would have a short haired pup. It is thought that this trait of inheritance is neither dominant or a recessive gene but the interaction of a large number of genes affecting each other in varying degrees. The Shih tzu is a combination of several Tibetan/Chinese (Tibetian spaniel, Ihasa apso, Pekingese) breeds . When the stars align or the genes in this case, it is not surprising that those gene express themselves as a Tibetan Spaniel coat in a Shih tzu.
