How To Implement The PARA Method Organising System

The knowledge management system known as the PARA Method is one of the easiest systems to capture and store the information you find truly valuable.
This method was first developed by Tiago Forte, the developer of the Second Brain productivity system. The method of storing notes that Tiago has devised is simple, accessible and ultimately actionable, regardless of who you are or what you do.
In this video, I will take you through the process of implementing and organising your information using PARA across the platforms you use to capture and store information.
The PARA Method is a knowledge management system that uses four separate folders to store all the information you encounter that you think is truly worth capturing. Projects are things you are actively working on right now with a defined end date and outcome, areas are things that need ongoing management over a long period of time, resources are things you want to learn more about or that you are actively interested in, and archives are things that you are not actively using.
These four folders are all you need to organise all the information you could possibly need.

Thanks Jonny - how do you organize delegated projects where you need to follow up? Is that in your active project list or is that in your areas? Also, if you have a project to do, but you’ve not yet actively started on it due to bandwidth, where do you keep related notes? Still in the projects area?

For the delegated projects, I would keep this in your projects folder (even in a new ‘Delegated Tasks’ folder) so you have everything you need there. It also means anytime you go into you projects you will see your delegated tasks which can be useful. By nature we can lots of areas going on so these delegated tasks might get lost if they were kept in an ‘Areas’ folder. I would also keep these notes in your projects folder (maybe in a nee folder called ‘Future Projects’). I know the idea of PARA is to have less folders but it’s also about making information easier to find and use which is why I would store future projects in your ‘Projects’ folder. Great content! Do you think Google Drive is suitbale for the PARA method, or maybe it'd be better to use a note taking app like OneNote or Notion?

Hi Lucas. I love using Google Drive for my PARA Method but I have been experimenting with Notion recently. My completely honest answer would be to try out both and see which one you prefer and which one fits into your workflow the best. Notion can take a lot of getting used to but has a lot of functionality whereas Google Drive offers simplicity with limited functionality. But definitely try them out for yourself first! The beauty of PARA is that the more apps you use it on the bigger the impact it'll have on your life. I used it on Google drive first as that's an app I use the least. But I soon learned how powerful this simple method was when i was working on a project in Things 3 and I wanted to find something in drive. Because I was using the same naming convention in both apps, it was easy for me to find what I needed. I then linked to the correct folder for easier retrieval. I'm currently implementing it into my apple notes. Again, same naming convention as everything else so it's all one system spread through several apps. Sorry if I sound a little fanatical but PARA has literally been life changing for me. I've made real progress on several projects that had previously gone nowhere and I'm just a lil bit happier not having all that anxiety inducing digital mess around me. Honestly I almost cried when I looked and saw only 4 folders in my drive when before there were hundreds of random folders, pics, movies, docs etc. Get the book!
