How to IMPORT a car to Spain (from Germany)

As you might know if you have been following my channel for a while, I recently moved back to Spain from Germany. When doing so, I decided to take also with me the car that I had bought while I was living there, which is a Fiat Panda. Now, since I have finally finished the whole process and the car is fully registered in Spain, I will be sharing how it was like for me and hopefully this will help you too if you have to import a car from a different country in Spain.

Oh god the memories, I wish I had this when I moved to Spain, what a nightmare it was. Drove 2 years on my German plates till the local police finally impounded my car. Nobody at the ITV seemed to know what to do, finally found out that the inspection had to be done in Gatafe south of Madrid. Paying the fee means signing up for some really really weird online portal. Eventually I got Spanish plates and insurance and showed up at the police and they were like, we don't care, just take your car!!! Interestingly enough it was the same process when we returned to Germany, only difference was the inspection could be done at any Tüv location. Anyways thanks for the memories!

If you have valid plates then you can drive the car of course. However, if you have a UK driving license you will need to get/exchange the license for a spanish one to be able to drive in the country after 6 months of moving to Spain (this is one of the negative consequences of Brexit). If you were living in Spain before the Brexit happened then it might not be the case but I am not really into the topic so you should research it. On importing a car from Germany, unfortunately I just shared my expenses but I don't know enough to tell how much you should pay. I suggest you consult with a specialised agency.

What about the taxes involved with age/catalog value and co2 emissions?

For the co2 emissions taxes for my Fiat Panda I don't have to pay anything. It emits 119g/km. If you have a larger car that consumes more then you probably need to then pay. This calculator online might be useful: atc.gencat.cat/es/tributs/impost-emissions-vehicles/simulador-emissions/

Hey Robert, myself and some German friends are thinking of doing some imports of car from Germany. We will buy it there and have it refurbished and then drive it or transfer it to Spain. Do you know the rules for vintage cars? Like 4x4's etc?

Hi, unfortunately as I mentioned I hired an external agency that helped me with this. I am sure that if you contact a "gestoría" in Spain (one of this consulting companies helping in the process) they will be able to answer it. I would assume that the same or very similar rules would apply though. What I can tell you is that part of the taxes you have to pay to import it also depend on the CO2 emissions of the car, so if it is an old car polluting a lot then the cost will be higher (not sure how much more).

Thank you for the video! If you pay VAT on the car in Germany when you purchase it, do you have to pay an import tax or any additional tax on the car in Spain? This would be keeping the owner the same.

I am sorry but I just shared my experience and I am not an expert so I would suggest checking with an agency that does this kind of paperwork. In my experience I only paid what I shared in the video, so I would assume that being within the EU then no import fees (but maybe in my case I didn't pay any because the value of the car was quite low, so if you import a more expensive car, then maybe).

So this is basically the budget only for transfer, and without annual insurance. Do you know how the insurance is calculated in case I buy the car myself in Germany and bring it to Spain? So I guess the insurance policy starts from thr highest excess rate? Do you have any info about that? Let's say buying a 10k Euros car how much would annual insurance cost me (like lowest cover similar to Haftpflicht in Germany) ? Also what insurance you think is best in terms of cost in Catalonia? Hi, so actually in the video I also share how much I pay for the insurance of my car yearly. My annual/yearly insurance costs 153,47€. My car though is quite cheap though. I would say that probably for a 10k € car if you already have some years of driving experience and are not under 25 years old probably for between 200-350€ you should easily find one. If you are coming from abroad I am not sure how exactly it is like but for sure if you take the cheapest one you cannot pay more than 500€/year. Just FYI paying 500€/year would only be the case if you include your kids just when they get their driving license at 18 and during the first 2-5 years of having it, but afterwards it should be max 350€ (again, just in my experience). I personally have my insurance with Atlantis, however, there are many other insurance companies: Linea Directa, RACC,... Not an expert in insurances but RACC has pretty good reputation.

Sorry, forgot to add that in terms of cost Atlantis in my experience when I checked was the cheapest but I guess that it all depends on the offer that you are able to get at each point in time. I think Linea Directa is also very cheap and based on the ads I have seen if you go to them with an existing contract they match or improve how much you pay.

I drove the car myself to Spain from Germany. Once I was in Spain it took about 1 month to get all the papers in order and be able to drive the car with the Spanish plates.

Unfortunately I have never done the process the other way round so can't really help. Probably though if you use an agency the cost of it will be higher (based on my experience with other things)
