In rts games you have your military Rock Paper Scissors and then your macro Rock Paper Scissors. military looks loosely like archer beats spear beats cav beats archer and the macro rps looks like boom beats turtle beats rush beats boom. Every decision the opponent makes you need to identify what part of the Rock Paper Scissors dynamic he is moving into. For example you see him build a tower. Tower is in the turtle family so you respond with a tc because tc is in the boom family. then he makes a whole bunch of military units suddenly so now he is moving into the rush family so you'll need to start doing turtle things like textiles and arrow slits. Each decision they do you respond with the correct counter decision. Its not a matter of who clicks the fastest its a matter of who counters the most.

I'm going to delve into the RTS genre when Company of Heroes 3 releases. I appreciate a video like this. Thank you.

My game is Age of Mythology so there's auto-queue on villagers. So I don't need to worry about or care about making villagers, it just does it automatically. Making villagers is not the problem. It's macro, micro, paying attention to units on the field, making sure to attack the right things, knowing when to go for a TC, how to make enough military units to keep up with the opponent so I don't get suddenly overwhelmed out of nowhere, how to keep up with scouting. These kinds of basics are not really relevant for me, I need intermediate fundamentals.

Sorry if I sound a little off at times I just got over a cold. Anywho, I really hope this helps anyone wanting to get into whatever RTS game of their choice and succeed!

Another step I would add after this is to figure out the most efficient military unit to create and add those to your rotation practice.

Shit man, this video is just what I needed recently. I've been trying to get back into RTS games after spending years just saying "ah I won't play them, I suck at micro/macro/whatever" but now I want to actually try to put in the time to improve to a level I can play other people for fun and not be stuck to the AI forever. I can do fine in tactics games like Men of War, but in games where I need to pay attention to multiple places at once and manage basebuilding, I have quite the difficult time. Lately I've gotten obsessed with Dawn of War 1(particularly the Unification mod), and I know I am EXTREMELY late to that party, but I want to be able to hang with the guys who have been playing this game for the past 10 years I neglected it, and at least be enough for a good time.

Try out Dawn of War Elite mode. You will love it (much better than sc2, aoe, etc.)

All awesome! But how to get better in non traditional strategy? I am playing the first two Kohans, Immortal Soveteign and Ahrimans Gift and I am getting slaughtered even by the AI. Video for such games would be thrilling!

Just making workers forever means you have no food to make anything else, though... stupid idea More generally, the fact that this video exists is proof of the RTS genre's fundamental idiocy

Imagine being such a fucking moron that you cannot understand the point of this video and the mechanics it's meant to teach 🙄
