The swarm’s writing TBH has been great. The themes of endless warfare always coming home to roost is really clever. The imagery of a butterfly hatching from a cocoon was a clever way to foreshadow that Sera is a doomed planet and war always evolves in new, sick ways. There will never be peace on sera

They really should've kept the Speaker as a recurring villain. One of the few locusts we see speaking complete sentences and who instigated the plot of Gears 4 and he gets killed off after his formal introduction. Fun fact in the book Gears of War: Ascendence Kate gets visions of the Speaker in her dreams but later on she apparently encounters two scions identical to him. These guys weren't hallucinations as other characters see them as well. It was a very weird aspect in a book I overall liked.

I actually liked the Rejects and other infected robot enemies since it makes the swarm seem like an enemy that adapts to its enemy, the fact that they can control machines and turn them against us is actually terrifying. Though I’d think they can better improve their designs, from what I saw, they looked better in the concept art, they should take the traits from them to make the ones in gear 6 a more better and interesting enemy

One of my main problems with the swarm is how colorful some of them are, compared to the locust who were pale, it just gave off more of a scary menacing vibe

yeah there a bit bright but other than that i actually like the swarm more design wise, way more variety that actually plays into their combat roles. like how the grenediers have thicker skin that actually makes them tougher or the slim hunters, trying to stay hidden and move very fast.

I always found the basic Locust drone just satisfying to see,their infrastructure,their uniforms and the variety of it or just a flock of Reaver,not some mindless bloodthirsty monsters,an actual civilization and Epic Games did that flawlessly on Gears 2 and i will give the grubs that they are well built

i mean armor is pretty much the only thing that separated the drones. i like the swarm more and how they have actual physical differences that can determine and affect comat roles. also granted the swarm literally just emerged, i know the locust were a full on civilization by eday but we're actually seeing the swarm get built from the ground up which is gonna take some time before they get to the locust level but i think it'll be much more interesting.

A lot of people forget Niles in gears 5 said the swarm were misguided because they didn’t have a queen. Immediately after they got one they became a bigger threat in the game. Given time they definitely could be a much bigger threat and have more variety and structure

Abz casually calling out the major plot holes with the enemies in this new trilogy. god, they really needed something else. What they really lack is a fleshed out background and they do need more swarm bosses to pose a threat similar to RAAM and skorge. Other examples outside the gears games that are great examples that come to my mind are darth vader, frank horrigan, and Adam smasher. All looming threats after you poke at the hornets nest with interesting traits coming from either their presence, personality, a walking nightmare, or all the above as villains and stand out from the other enemies in the game

I personally don't mind it overall but I find the red lobster skin of the swarm is not as intimidating as the classic locust. The crystals on the Scions are really good though.

I really feel like a long Gears campaign would be good but not too long like 5 was a bit short in my opinion if there was no side quests & collectibles like Gears 2. Even showing a Anya cutscene would be special especially given the choice in Gears 5 of what happened in the end

I think it would have been cool if the swarm was said to also use the genes from Lambent as well, since they have a similar mutation focus to their faction. That way they could have explored lambent/imulsion more.

It’d be cool if there was some sort of scion/warden general that picks certain swarm drones and elects them to be a sort of swarm captain that looks and fights entirely different than other units.

I'm replaying the older games with friends trying to achievement hunt, and we're trying to draw comparisons to Gears 1 to 4, and Gears 2 to 5 brainstorming what could come next in the franchise with Gears 6 and the conclusion is just axe the Swarm and make a Pendulum Wars game. Gears 3 is a incredibly tough game to beat out, so don't try. Have Beast, Overrun, and Horde return while also bringing back all of the old weapons and grenades. More enemies in the Swarm is also a must I agree, I miss the gritty enslaved creatures of the Hollow the Locust tamed. All we've got now is Leeches and an angry telepathic tentacle monster named Reyna Diaz (I mean Queen Reyna ooooh so intimidating and intriguing am I right?). Also, axe the Open world I don't want another bloated campaign like Gears 5 or Halo Infinite with worthless unused maps/areas/missions. Bring back Hivebusters it was fun

Lore wise the swarm is pretty Young as a faction and species so young to have a complex culture and most of their high ranking officers are evolve locust drones who are veterans of the human locust War so it's not surprising that most of their limited culture are copies of the locust horde

The « signature identity » part I think they’ve done well. You can easily see how feral they are, they get into each other’s faces when shown scrapping areas kinda like a pack of animals, and the Claw is a perfect incarnation of what they are. Doesn’t mean they can’t do more, but they have something already. DeeBee Swarm is fine. We need to stop acting like robots have never been part of Gears’ world. I’d like to see Rejects be more brutal though. I think overall more variety in enemy designs with more armor pieces or whatever, and more lore about them is what I want more than anything. The Kraken is mentioned in a collectible as being a creature that existed before, kinda like the Riftworm in a way. It’s a pretty safe assumption to say that the Flock infected it. But as you say, Carriers and Snatchers are still pretty much unknown. I love Hivebusters as a DLC but it should’ve been about Scorpio squad looking to find out more about the Swarm

you know, i just realised something interesting...that never could have happened in Gears of war 1 to 3, but in gears 6...it would be VERRY interesting and amazing to see some of the swarm just....straight up having severed their link with the swarm, regained their former memories and be either neutral or side with the COG, giving us insider intel of the enemy swarm. Imagine that. former swarm enemies that are sympathizers to the COG.

They could focus on other aspects of Gears like the "Pendulum wars" or with other focus on the Locus war , with other characters but that do not influence with the already existing characters.

Would Sera be designated with the application of a Death World by most Sci Fi verses standards even the Imperium Of Man due to how intensely hostile it is with many hordes of large xenos living underground? Even for a large force with Imperial Guard regiments, the Terran Dominion's military, and the UNSC this world would be a bloodbath to cleanse that would require a constant steady stream of supplies and reinforcements to conduct a series of campaigns to clear out the surface and the underground biomes. And that requires a lot of funding to do. For Mass Effect races and Killzone's Helghasts forget about trying to cleanse it. The Locusts and varies other hostile aliens would chew and spit them out in a long occupation.

The statistics of the death rates the human inhabitants had suffered trying to fight back against the varies Locust incursions would make even a regiment of Catachan Jungle Warriors waver and hesitate. Trying to clear out a single Rift Worm alone would be something that would require the firepower a battleship or cruiser in orbit to provide. Both Gears of War and the Lost Planet series worlds are so intensely hostile and infested with dangerous giant monsters even the Imperium's typical administrations that handle such procedures would hesitate colonizing such places. From having mountain sized worms to monsters the size of skyscrapers it's just not worth committing to that much life being lost in most situations.

I was doing playthrough a while ago of 5 and it got me thinking do the Scions view the Drones and their variations as lesser? Since the Scions are the original Locusts do they view any Swarm member derived from Humans as just a sort of conscript/slave force that are only to be used as tools. Another thought I had, though this one I had long ago, is that the Swarm actually had incorporated Imulsion/Lambent DNA into their own which when they entered their cocoons as it would explain their bioforming abilities since Imulsion/Lambent could mutate things

Between Sera and E.D.I. III from Lost Planet which world is objectively the hardest to survive in and which world has the most dangerous and powerful monsters to beat and worse environment? E.D.I. III has monsters nearly as big as the Rift Worms such as giant Akrid worms like the Red Eye which can devour a entire train in one bite though it can be slain with a giant railway gun though it is very difficult. E.D.I. III is a place I doubt even a chapter of Astartes with multiple Imperial Guard regiments can with fleet support clear out anytime soon without deadly casualties.

One small issue to the idea of bringing back Corpsers and Reavers: both natively evolved in the Hollows. The reason Brumaks evolved into Swarmaks and Drones into Scions is because they were surface dwellers that had their DNA spliced with that of creatures native to the Hollows, with Drones and Wretches having once been human and Brumaks having been chimpanzees. If they bring back Reavers and Corpsers, it would retcon what was already established. Why else have we not seen a Lambent Reaver or Corpser in any game, while Lambent Wretches were encountered in Gears of War Judgement, Gears of War 1/Ultimate Edition, and Gears of War 3, while Lambent Drones appear in Gears of War 2 and Gears of War 3 respectively? Not to mention the final boss of Gears of War 2 was a Lambent Brumak.

Just theories for now but It has been theorized that snatchers are reavers by Roanoke gaming a long time ago, after recently watching that video again, I got curious and started looking at carriers, and the Hive Beast, and I came to a theory of my own. I believe that Carriers are either Berserkers or Corpsers. I would personally prefer if they were Corpsers as I actually really liked the Berserkers as enemies but I will argue both points right here. 1 they are Berserkers, the face is very humanoid with only 2 eyes albeit also with 2 noses, the body is generally the same size as a Berserker, they have one pair of highly muscular arms ending in 5 digits, they are covered in thick bone or chitin plates which is also very similar, and finally they produce cankers, or a form of offspring. If this is the case, during their mutation, they would have some how lost their legs, their body especially their arms have thickened, the armor has been moved to the front while also thickened, their ribs would have been modified to open up and fire cankers, and they have also become Asexual as they can produce offspring without intercourse(note that cankers are more like flying sperm that Roanoke also theorized were actually needed for Pods to produce Juveniles much like sperm). For the Corpsers specifically the savage Corpsers, the general body shape is still there, with the hind end simply missing the 6 mini legs, the front 4 legs have merged into the massive arms more specifically the bottom arms merged into the top set as that matches the connection points, the scales from the legs growing across the body, the armor also isn't bullet proof like a Berserkers was, the head would would have shrunk, the eyes would have shrunk with 2 disappearing. Now for the Hive beast, I believe that it is a corper, and possibly the adult form of all carriers which is why they are so rare as they haven't been given enough time to grow up yet, the COG have killed many carriers before they start the process, the hive has to be a certain size to make one grow to this size, or they are simply used in other ways that we just don't see like making tunnels for the hive. To start, the bottom arms are nearly Identical to the arms of a Corpser, they are larger but still in the same size range as corpsers, they have 6 front limbs which while not the 8 Corpsers were known for could be explained by the front to limbs being larger and different from the other 4; it also has 4 eyes(2 on each side) in the expected area although they do have another 6(3 on each side) in their own group in front of them, and when looking at the concept art for the Hive beast, they show that it has a long body behind it similar to the rear of the Corpsers sometimes depicted with a large "foot" at the end of it while others also depict 2 unseen legs behind the front 2 that face backwards which would explain where the other 2 out of 8 went and why they can't be seen. It is possible that the 2 scaley lumps at the back might be thighs to these legs. In General they look very similar to carriers like a grown up or upgraded version. I mentioned earlier that they might need a certain hive size, and what I mean by that is after the snatchers have kidnapped enough people or Biomass for the hive to then do a similar process to a carrier.

I don’t enjoy how the new gears is colorful as well. The blood is more fruit punch, the gore is sloppy jello, everything about what made gears feel like a horror movie feels more like a cartoon now. I hope they can improve on these features in the next game. Great video as always btw.

I want to see a two small factions of former swarm. One that are pacifists who hide away, essentially what the swarm queen was before her decent into madness. They seek peace and want to undo the damage they caused. And another who wish to still fight but rather alongside humans for the sheer thrill of it.

You nailed every point on the list! This is what we want! Anyways, I now have faith that GOW 6 story is gonna turn out good because of the writers from the gears of war books that they're bringing in for this one. I hope there is no influence at all from any higher ups at coalition that would try to interfere with the project and make the game just another cash grab... I think I have a few things that I would like to add to your list. Intelligence: I think the swarm should be more intelligent than the locusts were in that they are able to develop far more advanced technology that they could use to wipe out humanity without the need to take up arms and fight the humanity in normal combat. So maybe the swarm leader be this extremely intelligent technologist who develops this hammer of dawn-like weapon that would wipeout humanity just like humanity tried to do years ago in the locust-human war aka the locusts. On a lower level, I would like to see the swarm begin to speak human languages, this would be a sign of their intelligence. This addition would be a pretty big risk as we've never had the villains actually speak in a gears game before but I think it would be a good risk as it would truly show the evolution of the swarm. Good Swarm: I think what would be an interesting idea is having some good swarm. Maybe some of the Swarm would be against the idea of fighting humanity using destructive weapons like hammer of dawn and would try to prevent it by teaming up with the COG. This would create some division within the swarm and many swarm factions would begin to emerge maybe creating a civil war within their civilization.

if we are to have a high general for the swarm, it should not just be a ramm clone nor a large hulking brute. we need the general to stand out and be something akin to grand admiral thrawn from star wars or viggo from how to train your dragon. the swarm has tons of brawn but lacks a proper brain and having someone similar to the two characters I mentioned act as the swarm's brain would make the swarm a devastating enemy.

The Swarm are… okay. They’re not a great enemy, but they’re not as bad as, say, the Prometheans in Halo. Most Swarm encounters are fun, and not knowing too much about them is actually refreshing at first. With the grubs, you know basically what they are once you cross chainsaws with them; aside from their use of beasts instead of machines and the fact that they burrow, they’re a mostly conventional enemy. They have a clear tactical leadership structure, they fight in roughly the same ways we do, and they replenish their numbers in a comprehensible way; the COG knew that Berserkers were female Locust by 14 AE at the latest, and in one of the novels Hoffman claims that the Locust breed via rape, though this isn’t directly corroborated in the games and could be just a theory. What I like about the Swarm is that we’re experiencing what the COG had to deal with right after Emergence Day-fighting a deadly enemy we know precious little about. Thematically, it’s great, though we definitely need to learn a lot more fairly quickly.

This is a bit off topic but I’ll post it anyway. Has anyone else ever noticed what appears to be a dead blood mount in the new hope facility of Gears 5? The lighting makes it a little difficult to see but it definitely looks like one which doesnt make a lot of sense in canon. It could just be something else but I dont see anyone anyone else mentioning it with a google search. I dont have a screenshot handy but its a little bit before you reach Niles in a room you hop over some cover to see it. Weird easter egg maybe, anyone??

Some of the things you said I agree with such as the lore weapons, variety, etc. I think the color needs to be tone down a bit for me judgment had the best mix for the colors I do not think need the to be exactly like the locust like the hierarchy because it would just be a copy and paste of the locust just different looks I do believe the leadership roles and ranks should be there you kind of see them lean into it in act one when the drone push the imagos around but then they just kinda stop showing it I don’t mind the corrupted DB enemies because it shows that the cog can’t rely on you on them as much and can be a way to show that the swarm are a bigger threat to the cog then we think now that they have a queen they should not be mindless enemies anymore a lot the new gears issue are just writing issues that can be fixed hive busters/act1 is proof that the call list can actually write a decent story and some lore if they really put there backs into it o also do not believe gears needs to be the same as the original trilogy but I do believe the horror/fear of war dose need to be there but it’s just not gears 5 act 1 did show this before then kait became the main character and it went downhill from there again a lot of this is just a writing issue

That's the feeling I got while playing gears 5 with my family today, small traces of a good game in the making. But fumbled cause they decided to make an inexperienced parental issued side character with the personality of a goat with a tooth ache and dyed hair the protagonist. On top of all the pride stuff too, sad that the writers think it's important in a game series filled with brotherhood, war, loss, testosterone and guns. To able to express who you want to sleep with and express your pretty little self.

In my opinion they should have started off gears 4 with the swarm already known to both COG, Outsiders, and any other human factions. However they should have leaned more into them evolving and took more from warhammer 40k space orks. There should have been many tribes and groups of swarm that didn't need humans to reproduce. However they still had that deep seated hatred for humanity along with their broken hivemind making them attack. They key would have been the swarm tribes would fight amongst each other as well as the human factions. The reason you can give in lore is because the hivemind was broken without a queen the kantus/priest class each interpret the hivemind differently so it naturally formed tribes. Make these swarm tribes at worst dangerous to anyone not as powerful to the cog but mostly raiding and nuisance enemies at the start. That way as the story progresses it allows the players to get a false sense of security like the cog would be at this point. That way as the game goes on the tribes start fighting each other less or start revealing new tech. Make that only happen when Kait the potential conduit for the hivemind is near. hell keep it subconscious so when the squad with kait fights swarm they are dangerous and unified. To show her importance or something. The bones are there to make the swarm interesting instead of the crap we got. Also sidenote but I feel like gears 4 and 5 would be better set as books or comics. they feel to much like setup instead of us just dealing the the threat. Example Gears 1: deploy lightmass bomb, Gears 2: invade the hollow, Gears 3 deal with the locust and lambent/End the war, Gears 4:save marcus/discover who we are fighting, Gears 5: ??? to many story points.

The Swam are the wish version of the Locust and that includes the name and the juvenile way they got their name. They have no personality or strategy. Remember in Judgement when Baird and company learned the Locust were fiendishly cleaver? In the first game they were tracking our movements via a headset from a soldiers helmet. Instead the Swam are just there when the writers tire of the robots something that I wish didn't exist. It completely flies against the lore of the series. The original unreleased look of the Swam were so good but for whatever reason they went with the cartoonish design that doesn't gel with the series and that goes for the new art style as a whole.

All of this suddenly appearing in the next gears installment would be so disjointed whilst I agree with what you say. TC has written themselves into a corner, the problem is the Swarm should have never popped up in the first place, the locust should have just returned somehow. There was never any need to copy and paste over attributes. It’s hilarious how many questions you wonder about in the current trilogy can’t people see how little thought was put into the story by TC. This trilogy has one game left, there is just no way they can cover so much ground. I don’t think gears 6 is going to be any good either way. It’s probably similar to Halo Infinite a soft reboot.

It’s easy. Have them kill off most of the major characters. I wanna be angry when I play against em. Only one who’s untouchable is Marcus until the end. Everyone else should be taken out. Show them playing chess while the cog is playing checkers. Honestly I wouldn’t end the series on a happy note. They’re stuck in an impossible situation fighting against an enemy that will always adapt and survive. Gears 4 and 5 were too light hearted in my opinion.

I wouldn't be made if they did a soft reboot at this point. Start with Gears 1. Make it more indepth. Show how massive the planet is. Follow the story of the wars before E-Day. Show the culture and day to day lives. Writing does need to be fixed woth E-Day and Locust. They can even make it a horror game. Small squad or squads cut off. No back up, and no reinforcements. They have to do what they can to get to their base or safe zone. The swarm just felt off. They are basically Locust. Gears 5 for sure needs to be redone. The ending choice of choosing between J.D or Del was dumb. It wasn't even shocking it felt lazy. I'm curious how Gears 6 will be.
