I can’t visualise positions but I can remember every game I played in tournament without looking at the score sheets, for about week after a tournament.

I have been playing chess for 1 year. I recently learned the blind flag method to improve my ability to compute variations. can you suggest me to imagine a 2d or 3d board? I usually play 3d board but I find visualizing real 3d board much harder than 2d board. do you guys think i should imagine the 2d board and imagine it when playing the 3d board? or do i have to imagine the 3d board when playing the 3d board? please give me feedback. Thank you so much.

Congrats on learning the blindfold chess technique! It's a great way to improve your chess skills. Imagining a 2D board can be easier for most people, especially beginners. It's simpler and less complex, which can make it easier to focus on the game and the moves. Imagining a 2D board can also be faster than imagining a 3D board because there are fewer details to visualize. Additionally, many blindfold chess players imagine the board as 2D, so there are plenty of resources and examples available to help you learn this method. On the other hand, imagining a 3D board can give you a better sense of geometrical relationships and can make it easier to see how pieces are positioned on the board. Imagining a 3D board can also help you develop a better sense of the board's geometry, which can be useful in calculating moves and variations. If you usually play on a 3D board, imagining it while playing blindfolded can help you maintain a similar mental image of the game as when you play normally. I‘d say it also depends if you mainly play online (2d) or over the board (3d). Hope this helped!
