Wow, this video completely transformed my fly fishing experience! The way you explained each casting technique with the streamer fly, combined with the excitement of landing those massive fish, gave me chills! This is the kind of content that makes me want to get out there and fish immediately.

Another great video, Dan. As much as I love watching your videos where you're just having a good time catching fish, your video tutorials are by far my favorite ones. I'm not very good at fly fishing, so any time I can learn something new, that will help me improve and enjoy the sport even more than I already do. Thank you!

Thanks for the tips Dan. Going to try some streamer fishing on the smaller rivers I've been hitting in the North Cascades. Dry flies are fun but I bet there are some lunkers in the deeper pools.

Dan, I really need to throw streamers more but always shy away because I'm not sure how to fish them although I've seen and read a ton of info. This video is really succinct and inspires me to just get out there and strip some streamers.

Awesome, that is exactly why I posted this video (inspirational). Best thing about streamer fishing is that it's not about finesse, it's about making as much commotion as possible, and the fish just come up and blast it!

Streamers are my go to summer flies. They work like bfs jerkbaits on bigger water.

I use straight 16lb fluorocarbon leader on big streamers. Caught a 36” channel cat and was very happy with how it went on an 8 weight. The line was shredded when I got him in, but it held. Just use fluorocarbons and go big. I’ve broken off big bass on 1x and don’t take chances anymore.
@FlyFishDan4 ай бұрын
Typically you can definitely go bigger for this type of fishing- I bet that cat put up a good fight!

FFD, just off a LONG weekend on the Joe. My biggest fish ever taken on that system was on a streamer last night, so yeah, these work. ☮from Idaho. p.s. there are still no fish in Idaho, so stay home please🙃

Thanks! I was using Cortland Finesse Trout II. It has a great shooting head that works well for streamers and dries. Great all purpose floating fly line.

Ah, now I recognized that you zoom in to another set up than you have in your hands while you are speaking at the beginning (#5 was shown) 😅 I love streamer fishing as well in Germany! But honestly I think a #4 would be a litte undersized for streamers this big as shown at the beginning. Whatever, just my opinion 😉 - great video and tight lines! 🎣
@FlyFishDan5 ай бұрын
I would agree, that in most cases, a 4wt would be a little light for any large streamer - I have fished as light as a 3wt for the micro-streamers though. Hello to Germany! Thanks for watching I do appreciate it!
@trentmiller73214 ай бұрын
Do you ever dead the streamer on a tight line? If so, do you think that it imitates a dead/injured minnow or maybe a leech? I have tried this technique several times, but with no luck on the rivers here in CO. So I just go back to swinging them. I have never really fished streamers until this year when I decided to try it during spring runoff. All I can say is that I am hooked!
@FlyFishDan4 ай бұрын
I have - under an indicator. I find the most strikes happen when the streamer is moving/darting vs. dead drift

Dan, this is the video I’ve been hoping to see! I‘ve been so focused on the subtlety of fly fishing that I have never explored this side of the game! It’s time to give it a try! At least when I do, other fly fisherman won’t be looking at me like … what in tarnation is he doin. 🤣🤣 BTW, @2:36mins- should I also be wearing a 3 piece suit ? Asking for a friend.. 😂😂 super great video man!
@FlyFishDan5 ай бұрын
I love both sides, the subtlety you mentioned and just the slamming, heavy leader, bulldozing through the water with a big ol' streamer fly. You can completely botch a cast, slam the water and a fish will still come up and hammer the streamer. You are going to love it!
@ef29675 ай бұрын
Dan, are you using a sinking line or floating line for your 6wt streamer rod?
@DomvHu5 ай бұрын
He explains it at 03:26.
@FlyFishDan5 ай бұрын
I am using a floating line (Cortland Finesse Trout II) with a long leader (3x) and a weighted streamer. I find that using floating lines are just far easier to manage vs. sinking especially in small to medium sized rivers

How big and how heavy is the streamer you used in the video? Thanks for the info. Tight lines.
@FlyFishDan4 ай бұрын
I used a series of streamers - mostly the larger sized sculpzilla fly in olive, I also caught a fish on the upstream cast using a smaller jig streamer (also in olive and weighted). The sculpzilla is very heavy - pick up and lay down cast recommended for the fly...the jig streamer is quite a bit lighter (but still weighted) and can be cast traditionally.

Hey Dan, I know you're a big cortland supporter. What are your thoughts on the WF floating modern trout 444? Is that a good "all around" fly line for just about anything I wanna do? Thanks for the content brother! Tight lines!
@FlyFishDan4 ай бұрын
My dad was a big Cortland 444 fan, he used this line almost exclusively. Cortland has kept this line around for that fact alone; it is a great 'all around' fly line and has a huge following. A trusted line for many years. Check out my website (fishonrods.com), I have a coupon code you can use if you are looking to buy direct from Cortland.

Streamer fishing is arguably the least technique sensitive for presentation and matching food forms for trout. The strikes can be incredibly agressive. I dig how excited you get ripping the lips on fish. Indeed the tug is the drug. Maribou tailed wooly buggers are a good entry point for new to the game streamer fisherfolk. Keep up the enthusiasm as it truly is what keeps us coming back. Well done sir
@FlyFishDan5 ай бұрын
Well said, and you are absolutely spot on. While I do enjoy the subtleties of fly fishing, such as matching the hatch and trying to get the perfect drag-free drift, it's such a relief sometimes to pull out the streamer, slam banks, and make chunky casts that slam the fly on the water. Yet, the fish still charge up and blast the streamer fly. So good! Thanks for the kind words; I truly appreciate it!

Did you say a 4 weight for streamers? Must be fishing streamettes?
