I loved my art teacher in my old school. She kept a basket of fidgets in her class and anyone who was having trouble paying attention could get one, as long as they weren't misusing it. We need more teachers like her

That sounds great. I have really long art lessons so my art teacher lets us walk around the room a couple of times if we are bored but a basket of fidget toys sounds great. One thing I need to work on is not getting distracted and hyperfocussing on the toys instead of what I’m meant to be doing.

I am an ADHD Coach... 1st of all, you're the best. Praise to you for the topics, the tips, the empowerment and last but not least, you are really articulate. Sometimes I WALK and talk with my clients to break down Extra thinking while we are working together. It's like driving and talking. We let down barriers because our subconscious are preoccupied with a "fidget". Keep up the great work.

I really appreciate the thoughtful response! I think I'd like to be an ADHD coach someday. It's already meant so much to me to help people with these videos, I can't imagine how cool it would be to see someone get their life on track by working with them directly. That's a neat trick, to walk and talk -- pacing helps me learn too!

I noticed an expanding ball in the children's box when I was seeing my therapist, I now grab it to fidget with before a session. Personally I'd love an therapist with autism or something similar. In 'Real-life 'Iron Man': How paralyzed surgeon is able to perform surgeries: Part 1' the surgeon says rather then people rejecting him they actually ask for him specifically and people in the comments where basically going 'of course they would, because he'd understand what people are going through'. Although at the moment more therapists with a focus on helping disabled adults rather then just children would be great, disabled or not.

I always get yelled at for shaking my leg. But the thing is, if I sit/stand perfectly still, I talk fast. Like at hyperspeed. I might start getting a fidget toy, so I can talk normally, and not disturb others with my shaking leg.

Not sure if anyone else has discovered this but I found the ultimate fidget activity: crochet. I took it up this week. It fulfills my need to fidget like nothing else ever has. I've also noticed it helping me cope with other things. At work this week I had to keep count of something multiple times. I'm terrible at keeping count. I had no problems with it.

My fidget toy of choice has always been manufacturer tags. The smooth woven fabric that usually has country of origin or material content printed on it. Not the silk ribbons, not rough woven design tags. The ones that come on pretty much everything from ikea, new hand towels, and even camping stuff like tents and sleeping bags. They are portable, free, last for as long as you can keep track of them, and help me pay attention or calm down. I rub them between my fingers, or the back of my hand or wrist, or my lips and chin and cheeks if I am alone. My parents, husband, and kids all help me keep track of my tags, and bring them to me when they come across them. My former therapist said that was an excellent coping mechanism, especially since I keep my habit on the down low. It's way less obnoxious than a pen click, or watching me bite my nails, which are usually what happens when I can't find my tags. Does anyone else use tags like this? I know the ribbon style taggies are popular now.

got told to stop fidgeting all the time. bounce my leg or use my clicky pen to focus and listening to a sermon . I LOVE clicky pens (drives my poor hubby crazy) and the thing he has resigned himself to is rubbing my feet together to help me fall asleep. It would irritate him so much as he didn't need to fidget and it is the only way I can fall asleep, tried so many different things. As a kid I got yelled at to stop being "annoying" to my brother or sister "your doing it on purpose." There is so much I wish I had known about ADHD growing up My mom was a big support as a teen, but there is just so much we didn't know back then that could have helped (1, the internet had just started, and two the research wasn't that prevalent as it is now.) thank you so much for your channel its been a blessing and there have been a lot of ahha moments.

I never thought fidgeting was okay. I just recently got diagnosed with ADHD at age 22 (they could not declare what type, but I strongly assume I am combined). I am a chronic fidgeter, and everyone I know has pointed it out or teased me about it. In school I was picked on and even worse, I sometimes rock back and forth during reading and watching videos... I have had people call me insane. It is freeing to know there is a community/tribe out there for brains like ours to connect, and freeing to know that I do not have to worry about forcing myself to stop such a chronic symptom, but rather use it to my advantage and help me accept who and how I am. I am crying lol

This is great! I used to get told of for fidgeting a lot, and my favourite fidget/stim activity was to twirl my hair (which was quite short) into a really tight twist, at my left temple, to the point where it could stick out from the side of my head, & 'defy' gravity. Sometimes I would absent-mindedly have about three of four of them sticking out. I copped a lot of flak from other kids for my 'weird hair', but it helped me stay focussed, without clicking/tapping my pen, jiggling/tapping my feet, or drumming with my hands & fingers.

I used to be really self conscious about how much time I spend pacing. I felt like it was a waste of time and like it kept me from being productive. I just recently learned that I have ADHD (almost 40), and it's neat that this is a thing because I noticed this for myself. I used to have to sit on long calls at work, and the problem was that 95% of the calls were irrelevant, and 5% were absolutely critical to my job, and were hidden throughout the calls. I'd always noticed that if I can do something with my hands, it's easier for me to pay attention, so I started juggling while listening to the calls so I'd actually pay attention and not let my mind wander. I never learned to juggle properly (stuck on 2 balls), but I kept my job and did good! Thanks for sharing this video, it's a wonderful strategy.

I don't know if I have adhd (even though I display some symptoms), but one thing that always makes me concentrate during class is to disassemble my pen and reassemble it. Also I almost always move one of my legs up and down constantly. They really help with my attention. Also music helps too. I am constantly singing sth inside my head and it really makes concentrating easier. I have a theory that I call the ram theory based on these. My idea is that our brains are like a computer system that is completing tasks. it only has that much processing power for a specific amount of tasks, so if I can't concentrate I try to fill up my "ram" with subconscious things like music or fidgetting so that my conscious only has enough processing power to do 1 task.

Because of my ADHD, I'm always told to stop fidgeting. I have this thing called nervous energy that my dad has always had. Basically, I always have to shake my foot or bounce my leg up and down. I do this constantly or I'll fall asleep. Sometimes it will make my desk shake and my friends will get vv mad at me

I discovered your videos and channel last night while I couldn't sleep, I'm now 31, but everything you mention was relevant when I was a child, cut nobody knew or cared really in Australia, my pediatrician was awesome though, but, I can't help but think how much better it would have been, if I could have sat everybody down to watch your channel. so thank you, a huge thank you. when I have kids, I know all of this, will be very helpful to remind me. and it's helpful for me right now. legendary. :-)

Oh I'm so glad I found your videos. I have never been diagnosed with ADHD, but I do struggle a lot with a lot of the issues you talk about here and that's what matters. I fidget a lot, hairband on my wrist, pen clicking, foot tapping, fingernail tapping, among others, but one thing I noticed is that I do a lot to give my floating attention something to do is chewing. The problem with that is obvious (hint, hint, it starts with over and ends with weight). Even if I'm feeling full I'll still want to chew on something. I do it while driving, while watching TV, while studying. Since I saw this video, I made the connection that my obsessive need to chew is probably "fidgeting." I've been trying to replace it with chewing less fattening things, like crushed ice or sugar free gum. And just the awareness helps so much. But anyways, I just wanted to thank you. Your videos are helping me a lot (even though half of the tips you give I find amazing but immediately put them in my not now pile #workinprogress).

I had to pause the video to laugh when I realized I was fidgeting with a hair band while listening to this. I've always kind of thought that I might fidget a little but not too much with anything (although all my friends know not to give me any entrance tickets before we've actually used them because I will mindlessly destroy them while talking to people) but watching this and catching myself fidgeting in a situation where I've never realized it before, makes me second guess EVERYTHING I thought I knew about how I work. Thank you for making videos! I've only recently started to consider the fact that I might have adhd and your videos have been life changing. I'm still waiting to get my diagnosis but even if I "end up not having adhd", I've found your videos on how to do anything tremendously helpful!

I got one of those figit toys made from the key rings and bike chain about a week ago and I love it. I carry it around in my pocket and take it out and play with it whenever I notice myself starting to lose focus on a task or just starting to figit with other stuff. I'm always worried about losing my pens or keys or something because I start figiting with them, and here I have something dedicated solely to that that I can use and so far I really love it.

In typical manner I immediately got distracted and then kept thinking about it then getting distracted when I went for it. But anyway a few months later I finally got it. How does persons with ADHD handle fear?
@15aharward
@15aharward 8 жыл бұрын
That depends on other things like how you handle stress. I'm not quite sure, as my adhd brain likes to either shut down and act impulsively with fear, or do something really smart to solve the perceived problem that causes the fear...

oh my gosh this is so helpful. I remember during my social skills class the instructor kept asking me to stop playing with my fidget cube because it was distracting to everyone else. You would think picking a function you're not using would just be intuitive, but hey, at least now I know. Also I never thought of music that way but I totally use it like that for things like writing. It's a nice background distraction that doesn't occupy my hands or my language processing center. Thanks for the tips. These really help.

Gah, this makes so much sense now! You explain it so well! Another fidget toy idea: I bought a handmade chainmail bracelet that also has stretchy rings in it. It's a cool bracelet, but it can also be used as a hair tie, AND it's amazing as a fidget toy. You can pull it, twist it, flip it inside out continuously, etc. Plus It's easy to carry around (wear it) and you don't get looked at weird for having a "toy" with you. My other bracelets always end up breaking because I fidget with them, but this one has held up amazingly well and I've had it a few years now. I think I might buy some more to have different colors for different outfits.

I work in Special Ed in an elementary school. One challenge we run into with fidgets is that they take the child's eyes off the teacher. Some students CAN pay full attention without looking, but many don't and the majority of teachers see looking down as not attending. I'd love to see a video addressing this.

I use a fidget widget (the thing with the connected cubes), a koosh ball, a plastic slinky (its great it will always come untangled), and different shapes and sizes of stress balls/other shapes (including an truck and, my personal favorite, a star). I have an entire pocket of my backpack dedicated to fidget toys! :D I'm glad to know that fidgeting is actually a good thing.

i made myself an ultimate fidget toy using chain links, key rings, and rubber washers when i worked at a hardware store and needed something discreet for when i was helping customers, it was great! now that im back in school, i pretty much just always have a sketchbook out. ive noticed some teachers giving me looks, and im not really sure if i should adress it or really if they even care. ive been keeping up on my work better than i ever have ( mostly because i finally found a system that works for keeping track of things i need to do which is a modified, large scale, interactive version of the bullet journal using post it notes lol), it just makes me unconfortable when i feel like theyre percieving my actions as disrespectful.

One that's soothing for me are the Greek Worry Beads, or kombolói. Typically they're for men only, but I bought a string of them when I was little in Kos. They hang over my bed knob. The plastic beads are smooth and make pleasant clicks when I let them fall against each other. I just run them through my fingers.

I’ve been wanting to comment forever about the fidget keychain we sell at the water park I work at during the summer. I teach and my students never know I have it in my hand unless I draw attention to it. It’s my favorite too, and I’ve actually kept up with the same one for almost an entire year, which is unheard of for me! Haha I see it’s called the ultimate fidget, we named it the fidget keychain last summer.

I love the tangle. Helps with my ADD and anxiety. Haven't had it for a while, I had to go to a 2 hour thing where we sat in the same chair for the entire time. Plus it was sooo boring. I almost died the first time I went because of social anxiety with where to sit etc.. and my ADD so I brought my tangle to the second class and it helped with both my anxiety and ADD.
