Forgive my vulgarity, but this is the kind of simple shit i wish i had seen a LONG time ago. I could have learned and enjoyed guitar for years if things had been presented this way. Of course, i started way before there was Internet and youtube.... Hope you continue this as a regular(+frequent) series. Thank you, Chappers. Oh my god. What you just said at 8:23 - that may be the thing i've been looking for. The simple rationale for the five positions. I don't think i've ever heard it explained that way. This is nuts. I have a 'big giant brain' for most other things, but a mental block with anything that even approaches music theory. This may have just cracked the block....

I totally agree. That explanation of the different positions was the best I've heard.

I've been limiting myself to rhythm guitar for far too long mainly because music theory seems so vast and I had no idea where to start. This is an excellent help because not only does it teach some practical applications for basic things like the minor pentatonic scale, it also showed how the principles still apply to higher level play i.e. that slightly mathy/proggy demonstration at the end there.

I'd love to see more of these super basic lessons on here in the future, as there's all sorts of stuff I learned in college to recite on a test (without ever understanding it), and then Rob comes along and in 10 minutes fully explains topics my teachers couldn't in a semester.

Rob, First, let me say thank you for the tutorials you have posted on KZbin. I have really enjoyed the ones for beginners. I have a suggestion that might be helpful for people who are learning to play by watching your tutorials, it is only a small suggestion but I thought it might be helpful. Do not turn down the volume on the guitar when you are going to speak, just mute the strings. The reason I am saying this is in several videos you turn down your volume, play the chord you're are teaching and then turn the volume back up on your guitar. It is chaos for those of us listening through headphones, we set one volume and then you do not return to the same volume, also we cannot hear the sound when your first play the chord when you forget that the volume has been turned off on the instrument. I know this sounds a bit nit-picky, but some of us are trying to soak up what you are sharing like human sponges. how hard or soft you are engaging the strings at each chord progression is important.

Just stopping in to say that a killer tip for not sounding so bluesy while using the Pent scale, is to play your first note in the lead right on the one instead of waiting for the 2nd beat. Play the root and first note at the same time and it will open up the scale for you and your riffs will follow and give you new ideas that arn't so lazy blues sounding. Good lesson for beginners for sure. Nice one Rob.

The magic blues chord! What profound wizardry is this? Carol Kaye, THE female bassist of American music has recommended learning to play from chord notes rather than learning pentatonic scales. This lesson gives us the chord built ON the E pentatonic scale. One chord shape to rule them all!! For a beginner anyway. Thanks!

One thing I have liked about these so far is everyone else says to put the guitar on your right leg as if it is an absolute must, for us with shorter fingers and thicker wrists this makes making and reaching things near the nut very hard (at least at first) so to see someone advocate holding the guitar between your legs and at a higher angle is pretty cool, especially since I was already doing as some chords were just to hard so thanks for that - I always wondered why that was such a thing many teach when the classic "rock stance" is more or less the guitar strait up positioned centered in the body...

Hey Rob, thanks for this. One thing that visual learners like myself might like is to have the fretboard graphic flipped over so that the E string is at the top of the screen. It might suck for lefties, but might help the rest of us out who are just trying to mirror what we see on the screen. For me it was a bit like reading upside down. Cheers!

The first chord rob plays, I believe is the main sort of verse riff in the song "Dive" by nirvana. When you hear kurt Cobain singing the verses you will clearly hear this exact chord. Just a point of reference for you and what this chord is. Especially I guess if your a nirvana fan. Similar chord in serve the servants as well.

I'm a pretty experienced player, but still found this video useful. For instance, that first chord, the A dom7, is one I use a lot, but I rarely go the the same-shaped D and E. Why? I don't really know. It's ergonomically sound, so I'm going to start doing it. And the idea of using a sort of one-note drone to replace the actual chord is so easy, and produces a really cool effect when the soloing notes are added, but again, it's one I rarely do. Also, I know and use all five blues scale positions pretty easily, but I never made the connection of those positions being connected by the individual notes of a scale being played along one string. Thanks, Rob!

Really good stuff. I knew some stuff already, but the way it was presented was new and interesting. I would have said that it was beginner unfriendly to not use standard tuning, but I see what you mean about learning to listen and not be afraid of weird tunings. I think I have been, needlessly. Thanks for jogging me out of it Rob! :)Cheers.
