I learned Jamerson's "What's Going On" note for note, and then realized that when he chose to not to play, was just as important as when and what he played... A true Master of space and time.

It is great advice when you link the skills of learning a line 'getting it under your fingers' and' linking up patterns' to connect to the fluidity of how Motown bass lines are open to interpretation without sounding discordant or dissident. Actually sounding groovy and in a rhythmic flux that just flows with the tune or song without relying on repetition. There is a lot to unpack in this tutorial. Thanks Dan, another eye opening lesson.

Hi Dan. Thank you for this vid. I’m a very beginner as a bass player (bought my first bass about 3 months ago) I am more a hard rock/pop music guy than a motown/rb but I am discovering an amazing world of simply great bass lines/ideas in that music. It is really worth listening to the bass greats if the past. 😊
@OnlineBassCourses2 жыл бұрын
It really is! Plus a lot of those rock lines came from the music before it, which includes Soul music. It’s always a good thing to learn from the great bass players in history.

I've watched many of your video lessons and as ever, lots of content here and lots to think about. Sometimes Jamerson's playing can get a little busy but always fits the main melody. I use his work to see how the greats get from chord to chord and how the 1/16ths, or rests fit in the song. Great video and thanks again.

Love this Dan,and I'm really going to go the extra mile with this.I love J.J. and his playing, he's influenced so many of my favorite players.In particular,Bruce Thomas who really took to Jamersons' style and ran with It.I always have for the most part used S.S.Rounds (except on fretless) but I'm putting flats on my P Bass today.I believe this lesson will help me rethink a couple of things. Thanks.

Bruce Thomas is the James Jamerson/John Entwistle of "New Wave." His lines on Elvis Costello LPs are astounding.

That’s cool, Kevin! I think you’ll enjoy the sound and vibe of flats.

Dan I have a question? Are passing notes always kinda in the same general area on the bass or just depends on what key ur in??
@OnlineBassCourses2 жыл бұрын
Absolutely depends on the key you’re in but also where on the neck you want to play.

You're getting a surprisingly fretless -ish sound with those flatwounds. Sounds great. What's your favorite Jamerson bass line/song?
@OnlineBassCourses2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Jason. I have loads of favourites! Probably What’s Going On by Marvin Gaye. Incredible song.
