Hi Scott, can you help and go thru the process of intergrating into a typical covers band?, whats your thought process to tackling the challange, is it simply just transposing? what instrument are you best to follow?

Hey! I'm not exactly sure what you're asking. Could you be a little more specific? Feel free to send me a message through my website.

Hi bro thanks for the video it's amazing, I have a question : how we can play it with a backing track? in which concert key if we go 3 semitones back?? it's a little complicated if we merge it with the music or backing track? Any suggestion? Best regards

Hey! Yeah, alto sax is down 3 half steps from the concert key and tenor sax is up one whole step. Check out this video I did on transposing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIaUhYqcapeLadU

Often times the chords for a song are diatonic or use one scale for modern music, jazz has often 2 or 3 keys or scales. If so just find the notes that are different from the other scales and just alternate those notes during the changes based on the chord, then memorizing the chords become less conscious. Then you’re not thinking so much about the key as much and can focus on the the melody more and when progression must be spelt out clearly it’s easy. Thinking diatonic changed the game for me and almost ruined me analyzing chords 😅. I play the chords correctly and then never actually consciously learned the chords. Just learned the diatonic changes and went by ear. My high school teacher was awful at teaching advanced playing techniques like altissimo but drilled scales, arpeggios and ironing out patterns. Me “what about chord progression and altissimo” Her “These patterns are everything, you’ll eventually know without knowing, if you want to be good at playing instead of theory, now go do your arpeggios test” She was right…..😂

I call those tonal centers, and that definitely helps! But hitting the chord tones will make your solo sound like it has more direction.

@@ScottPaddock of course! I use it as a way to find the changes by ear. I can eliminate thinking about the centered notes and find the notes that are not tonal much faster. I think a lot of people get distracted by trying to find every note of the chord consciously but if you practice your arpeggios religiously you don’t have to think about it as much. Then it’s just pattern xyz for each chord symbol and then you don’t think out each note. I played with guitar players and they don’t think about individual note patterns as much as we do as they are chord based. When I caught on that a lot of intermediate guitar players cheat and never learn anything but the chords by fingering patterns. So i figured let’s take the sax and apply it that way and just started memorizing all the patterns for each type of chord and then going through and practicing changes. Sped my ability to learn songs up dramatically.
