Our max reps is the best indication of our overall capacity in a movement, but being able to do more is what allows us to improve.
If you're looking to increase pull up reps, dips or any bodyweight exercise for that matter, the technique we go through today will achieve this!

i am at 6 feet assisted pull ups, 10 push ups and 6 Dips lol still improving. I have been working more on completing at least 3 sets of a number of reps like 8-8-8 then adding a rep so far my push ups have increased. it's been feeling manageable because i find having so many "progression techniques" can confuse you and derail you big time. i like yours cuz it's also manageable.

12 pullups, 100 pushups (idk how the form looks near the end tho), 30 dips. I do 10 sets of pushups throughout the day 100 normal ones, and then 10 pseudo planche, 10 archer and 10 pike not sure if it's efficient for growth but since it's the only thing I've been doing since lockdown and I know it's better than nothing. Recently got a pullup bar so there's not too many reps on that yet.

Cool, I never saw it this way. Focus on improving our ability to recover, and let higher reps be a byproduct of that. It's like a big part of "strength" depends on our ability to manage lactic acid, which again seems pretty obvious when I think about it. I love your ideas. Do you have any books that you'd recommend?

Hello, Usually, the best thing to do is to start a workout with the hardest exercises since we are fresh. In my case, dips are harder than rows. I want to increase my reps of both dips and rows. I work out 3 times per week, full body. How should I organize this? Use this method for both exercises on the same day each workout? If not, then should I start with rows using your method and later do normal sets and reps of dips until failure, or start with normal sets of dips and later use your method for rows? In case I shouldn't use this method for both exercises on the same day, would you recommend doing 2 days focusing on your method for rows and 1 on dips, or 2 days of focusing dips and 1 day on rows ? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I'm the type of person who needs to know every detail to work out with a clear mind.

@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
Good question. Because the number of reps within your capacity are quite low, I'd suggest you have a longer rest period - in the same way that you would if you were training for strength. If you set a starting rest period of, say 4.5 mins and try this again, let me know how it goes. Also make sure you are only training once you have fully recovered.
@johnguest4525
@johnguest4525 Жыл бұрын
@@CaliToTheCrowd It may be more time efficient to drop the number of sets to 6 and keep the initial 120 rest period for the 6 week cycle). Pushing 9 sets will likely result in more recovery time (days lost) and therefore less overall volume. The 4.5 minute rest down to 30 seconds will take 12 weeks by dropping 15 seconds a week. Its a tricky one :)

Hi Andrew, if you can do, for example max 30 push ups and you want to increase your numbers, would you take 70% of 30 = 21 and only do 2 sets (takes you over 35 rep total)? Or is it better to add weight to your push up, to drop your max down from 30 to 10 max and work 70% set and reps from the weighted push ups?
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
Great question, Craig! This technique is mainly for people looking to get to about 20 reps maximum. Like you've suggested, I agree that if you can do more that 20 reps of an exercise then you should start adding weight. Weighted push ups are extremely underrated and I personally would add weight until you can only do about 10 high quality reps maximum and try this technique from there. 👊🏿 You will likely still find that your max bodyweight-only reps still increase!

@@CaliToTheCrowd as an update: this is already proving to be an amazing experience. I’m doing five sets of 5 three times a week at the beginning of my workouts. Not only does it provide a great overall body warmup, but on the days I program Back workout it is a great starter. I’m even seeing videos that pull ups can completely replace other weighted back exercises but haven’t made that decision just yet. When I first started I could only do seven in a row. Now that I’m doing five sets of 5 strict pull ups - now at the sixty second rest iteration of your program - I’m pretty excited to see how another three weeks does. I haven’t tested a full set to failure to see how many I can now do as I want to wait until the seven weeks is completed to see the full effect. I’ve even added four sets of weighted pull ups with a ten pound weight - 2 sets directly after my five non weighted and 2 sets at the end of my workout. Interested to see how that progresses in parallel. I’m falling in love with pull ups, and your program has really clicked with me. I’ll circle back in a few weeks when I’m finished with the program!

I would suggest sets of 2, but do a dropset of 2 banded pull ups too. e.g. Set 1: 2 pull ups + 2 banded pull ups rest Set 2: 2 pull ups + 2 banded pull ups etc. Then once you can do 4 reps, just do exactly as the video states. hope this helps!

not exactly, 9 reps is right because that is 70% of your max, but you only would need to do 4 sets as that would bring you to 36 total reps

Hey Andrew, I've been doing dips for quite a while now, and have now only recently started to get a pain in my left side clavicle (collarbone) any idea what causes this?
@CaliToTheCrowd
@CaliToTheCrowd Жыл бұрын
I have seen this issue before and usually comes from doing dips with the shoulder internally rotated or with not enough scapula retraction. Work on really retracting the shoulders throughout the movement, but if you still experience pain, you know the motto: see a physio! Really hope the pain disappears soon! 👊🏿

You CAN, though I have only really used it with exercises to the 20 rep mark. I'd challenge the value of having sets that run over 20+ reps unless you're a competitive athlete, and perhaps weighted work would be more efficient 💪🏿

A bit of both to be honest. ATP is restored when we rest, this is true, but the reason our muscles ache is due to lactic acid build up

I'd argue that if those are 20 super clean reps, and you have already tried slowing them down, then adding weight may be the best thing for you from an efficiency perspective. Out of interest, why do you want to get to 50 dips?

@@CaliToTheCrowd hey man I wanted to ask what you think about this? Proposed Plan -Tuesday: Pull-ups -Thursday: Dips, push-ups -Saturday: Pull-ups, dips, push-ups - Start with 70% of your max repetitions. - Rest for 120 seconds between sets. - Decrease rest time by 15 seconds each week until you reach 30 seconds. - Recheck max repetitions and reset rest period to 120 seconds. - Repeat the cycle. Week 1 - Tuesday (Pull-Ups): 70% of max reps, 120s rest - Thursday (Dips, Push-Ups): 70% of max reps, 120s rest - Saturday (Pull-Ups, Dips, Push-Ups): 70% of max reps, 120s rest Week 2 - Tuesday (Pull-Ups): 70% of max reps, 105s rest - Thursday (Dips, Push-Ups): 70% of max reps, 105s rest - Saturday (Pull-Ups, Dips, Push-Ups): 70% of max reps, 105s rest Week 3 - Tuesday (Pull-Ups): 70% of max reps, 90s rest - Thursday (Dips, Push-Ups)**: 70% of max reps, 90s rest - Saturday (Pull-Ups, Dips, Push-Ups): 70% of max reps, 90s rest Continue this pattern until you reach 30s rest intervals. -Every 4th Week: Instead of reducing rest periods, introduce weighted pull-ups and dips with lower repetitions (e.g., 3-5 sets of 3-5 reps with added weight).

At a high level, I really like it. in terms of the absolute numbers and percentages, it would be a mater of closely monitoring it to make sure that you were still progressing (even little wins can compound to big wins). But generally I think this is a quality plan for increasing rep count. Word of warning, it may be difficult doing this with 3 exercises. You might want to try pull ups and dips to begin with and then doing a less intense push up set afterwards - you'll probably find that you'll still get a lot of push up progress from maxing out on Dips!
