Kevin, I have been trying to get answers to my questions for over two hours surfing the net. I am so glad I found you. You are a breath of fresh air! You have the entire package for a very successful career. Good looking, clean-shaven, and nice smile. Most importantly, you explain things in a fashion that most of us can understand. Myself, like many others, learn best by auditory and visual examples. You do an excellent job teaching with your combination of A&V and are not going 100mph and give simple definitions. No, I am not LD! It's obvious that most of the people on Utube do not know their subject matter and gloss over things they really know nothing about. It's no wonder you have so many followers. The comment below, "I Feel like this guy is the physical manifestation of a Text-To-Speech Software". He's jealous!! Keep up the great work Kevin. Thanks so much and you have one more subscriber.

One thing concerning the router location is to consider the signal strength of each device. My router has a "Status" page with "Wireless" sub page. It shows me the current signal strength for each connected device and the expected Mbps. Adjust your router location while watching the live signals. It's not always going to be so cut and dry as to putting the router in the middle of the house. With my home having a 2nd story I have to have the router at the base of the stairs just to get an 80% signal upstairs. Meanwhile, the rest of the house shows 100% signal strength. Once you find the best location, fine tune your signal again with the antenna by moving each antenna one notch at a time.

Another informative tech vids! Thanks a lot Mr. Kevin for enlighten us for today's topic. I have query, does the Ethernet standard cable or also known as "category" like CAT5 or the latest CAT8 that can support 40gbs speed. Do all of this CAT's have difference in terms of speed connectivity?
@KevinStratvert2 жыл бұрын
This site contains a nice table that lists out all the cable types and max data rates: www.tripplite.com/products/ethernet-cable-types#:~:text=Ethernet%20Cable%20Categories%20%20%20%20Category%20,Gbps%20Core%20Infrastructure%20%207%20more%20rows%20 Category 8.2 is currently the best and supports up to 40Gbps.
@Everything2A2 жыл бұрын
@@KevinStratvert actually I slightly disagree with you. On my 2.5 gig plan wi-Fi 6E is faster than Ethernet. Most residential consumer grade products have 1 gig LAN ports. However most consumer devices are getting Wi-Fi 6 and is faster than a wired connection ironically enough, at least for now. Although I’m completely agree with you 99. 999% of the time a wired connection is always superior. However, I use Wi-Fi 6 for my PlayStation 5 because I can download games faster than over the 1 Gb ethernet port bottleneck.

One thing I usually recommend is to set the SSID and password the same on both bands, so the transition between them becomes more seamless.
@KevinStratvert2 жыл бұрын
Great tip!
@azferahseng34112 жыл бұрын
I dont recommend that if the aim is use only 5Ghz. Our devices decide to connect band with strongest signal hence it might alaways stick to 2.4Ghz. Here is my setup 1. I modified RJ11 jacks on the below rooms to become RJ45 for ethernet. a)Master bedroom b) Room middle c)Room beside Living room wall d)Living room 2. Get a 3 sets of mesh networking devices : TP-Link Deco X20 3. Wired one node each in a), c) and d):main router and modem link 4. Use SSID above with only 5Ghz. And also set Auto roaming for seamless roaming provided client devices comply with standard Clients need to support 802.11k/v/r 5. Add another network with a different SSID on 2.4GHz and use only for IoT devices eg. door lock and camera outside. These devices only support 2.4Ghz anyway. 6. Since Deco X20 is 1.8Gbps and my actual internet subs is 500Mbps, speed test is reasonable at 476Mbps. 7. I am upgrading to 1Gbps currently and expect to reach around 980Mbps Speedtest with the same Deco X20 setup

For your MTU is set to about 1500, which I found out is to big, so I trimmed of the size down to 1412 and that was the maximum that I could get a response from the ping test without any loss - I did try a bit bigger but 1412 was the limit. Once that was set internet performance was restored. You can do this for both wired and wireless connections...

i suggest not choosing a channel near ones that are being used. 5Ghz has variable channel width meaning that someone could chanin multiple channels together, if thats the case you will still see interference on those channels. In your case Kevin i would have gone with a channel somewhere in the middle. Additionally on the 2.4ghz, only choose channels 1,6,and 11 ( also 14 if your in Japan). modulation works differently on 2.4 and bleeds over into the channels between these ones. Setting to channel 3, for instance, would mean you would be getting interference from both channel 1 and 6. Also Bluetooth uses some of these in-between frequencies for beaconing so your own Bluetooth devices could cause interference if you don't stick to these 3 (or 4) channels.

It should also be noted to all those reading my comment - DNS should also be set - google Open flair DNS settings - Also do a ping test to google and see what your MTU packet size should be with out loss and you'll get the best performance out of your network to your Computer.
@maximilianosalibe17102 жыл бұрын
I'd only add that it's important to take in account other devices' specs, such as chromecasts connected to the network. They only get some wifi channels (specially, if you have to use 2.4 GHz because your mobile phone is a bit old and you must have it on the same network) .
@j.nicolasramos80612 жыл бұрын

It's informative Kevin. I have one query. If i own a router, I am only using that router. I use 2.4 GHz and no other people touch it. What's your opinion on this? Do I need 5 GHz to increase the speed and more reliability?
@KevinStratvert2 жыл бұрын
2.4GHz supports speeds up to 860 Mbps, in perfect conditions. 5GHz supports up to 1801Mbps in perfect conditions, which is quite a bit faster. Even if you're the only one using your router, it also depends on all the other routers in your area. Since 2.4GHz support has been around longer, more people tend to use it, which results in more congestion. If you have 5GHz as an option, I'd use that over 2.4GHz.
